We propose a model to determine the influence of different cell properties, such as size, membrane capacitance and cytoplasm conductivity, on the impedance spectrum as measured in a microfabricated cytometer. A dielectric sphere of equivalent complex permi ...

The understanding of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions via receptor and ligand binding relies on our ability to study the very first events of their contact. Of particular interest is the interaction between a T cell receptor and its cognate peptide-m ...

We report an alternative technique to perform a direct and local measurement of electrical resistivities in a layered retinal tissue. Information on resistivity changes along the depth in a retina is important for modelling retinal stimulation by retinal prostheses. Existing techniques for resistivity-depth profiling have the drawbacks of a complicated experimental setup, a less localised resistivity probing and/or lower stability for measurements. We employed a flexible microprobe to measure local resistiv

Despite its simplicity, which makes it the most commonly used bioprinting method today, extrusion-based bioprinting suffers from its inability to reproduce the complex tissue architecture found in organs. Generally, this printing method allows for the disp ...

We present a novel perfusion-based microfluidic platform for label-free drug toxicity screening which can single out non-lethal morphological changes from cellular death using electrical impedance spectroscopy. Minor cellular changes such as cell-cell cont ...

Background An accurate understanding of the electrical interaction between retinal prostheses and retinal tissue is important to design effective devices. Previous studies have used modelling approaches to simulate electric fields generated by epiretinal p ...

Active control of ion transport plays important roles in chemical and biological analytical processes. Nanofluidic systems hold the promise for such control through electrostatic interaction between ions and channel surfaces. Most existing experiments rely ...

We present here Al2O3/W hetero-structured nanopore membranes which function as native and electrical field tunable nanofluidic diodes. A typical membrane is 100×100 μm2 in size with pore density of ∼ 20/μm2. The nanopores are 26 nm in diameter and 400 nm i ...

Amphiphilic lipid formulations, such as self-emulsifying drug delivery systems, offer advantages for enhancing drug release control and expanding their applicability across various administration routes. By integrating microfabrication techniques with these lipid-based systems, additional functionalities such as controlled drug release can be introduced. This can broaden lipid's potential for advanced biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. However, lipids face major fabrication challenges due to their

The Poisson limit is a major problem for the isolation of single cells in different single-cell technologies and applications. In droplet-based single-cell assays, a scheme that is increasingly popular, the intrinsic randomness during single-cell encapsula ...

Electrical measurement is a widely used technique for the characterization of nanofluidic devices. The electrical conductivity of electrolytes is known to be dependent on temperature. However, the similarity of the temperature sensitivity of the electrical ...

We propose a novel neural probe which combines microfluidic channels with recording and stimulation electrodes. The developed microfabrication approach enables the concentration of every active element such as electrodes and the sampling inlet in close pro ...

PURPOSE. To present a novel and minimally invasive approach to intraocular pressure (IOP) monitoring based on a sensing contact lens. METHODS. The key element of this measurement method is a soft contact lens with an embedded microfabricated strain gauge a ...

Here, we demonstrate a new approach for the synthesis of ion exchange microfibers with finely tuned anhydrous conductivity. This work presents microfluidics as a system to control the size and phosphoric acid (PA) doping level of the polybenzimidazole (PBI ...

The large majority of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are fabricated on silicon, glass or Pyrex substrates by manufacturing techniques, which originated from the semiconductors industry. However, their final application often requires removal of the ...

Micronanotechnology-based multielectrode ar- rays have led to remarkable progress in the field of transmembrane voltage recording of excitable cells. However, providing long-term optoporation- or electroporation-free intracellular access remains a consider ...

Colloidal particle-laden inks are increasingly used in additive manufacturing to produce functional components with tailored properties, and droplet-based microfluidics enables precise generation of high-viscosity, particle-rich droplets. Despite extensive studies on particle-free shear-thinning fluids, the coupled influence of particle concentration on both flow regimes and droplet size in microfluidic systems remains insufficiently understood. Here, we showed that particle concentration in shear-thinning,

The electrochemical quantification of analytes in droplets of PBS separated by a fluorinated phase was investigated. PDMS-fused silica chips with pyrolysed photoresist electrodes were prepared using a simple fabrication technique and used to analyze drople ...

Introduction The olfactory and trigeminal system are closely interlinked. Existing literature has primarily focused on characterizing trigeminal stimulation through mechanical and chemical stimulation, neglecting thermal stimulation thus far. The present s ...

The experimental and numerical investigation presented by Bertsch et al. (Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 5, 2020a, p. 054202) describes the self-sustained oscillations induced by the interaction of two impinging jets in microfluidic devices. While the oscillatory ...
