Micro-channel cooling is gaining considerable attention as an alternative technique for cooling of High-Energy Physics (HEP) detectors and Front-End (FE) electronics. This technology is being evaluated for future tracking devices, where material budget lim ...

Carbon electrodes have recently been introduced as an alternative to metal electrodes and insulator structures for dielectrophoretic applications. Here, an experimental and theoretical study employing an array of 3D carbon electrodes contained in a microfl ...

A new type of microrobot is described. Its simple and compact design is believed to be of promise in the microrobotics field. Stepping motion allows speeds up to 4mm/s. Resolution smaller than 10 nm is achievable. Experiments in an open- loop motion demonstrated a repeatability better than 50 mu m on a 10 mm displacement at an average speed of 0.25 mm/s. A position feedback based on a microvision system will be developed in order to achieve a submicron absolute position accuracy.

A novel type of particle detector based on scintillation, with precise spatial resolution and high radiation hardness, is being studied. It consists of a single microfluidic channel filled with a liquid scintillator and is designed to define an array of sc ...

We present an easy, durable method to generate a partially hydrophilic/hydrophobic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic device. The functionality of this device was assessed in a double flow focusing design to fabricate core–shell structured poly(lac ...

Transport of proteins in liquid-filled nanometer-sized apertures with charged surfaces based on both diffusion and convective flow is investigated with the use of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. The measured fluctuations of fluorescence allow the ev ...

A new type of scintillation detector is being developed with standard microfabrication techniques. It consists of a dense array of scintillating waveguides obtained by coupling microfluidic channels filled with a liquid scintillator to photodetectors. Easy ...

We present a MEMS infrared spectrometer for selective and quantitative chemical gas analysis. infrared absorption spectroscopy can distinguish gases easily and also detect nonreactive molecules like CO2, in contrast to e.g. metal oxide gas sensors The foll ...

This paper reports on a new microfluidic chip designed for cell electrofusion. A pair of cells is brought into close contact by means of opposite dielectrophoretic forces and they are subsequently fused by applying a short electrical pulse.

This paper reports on the technology development and characterization of polyimide-based, microfluidic channels with integrated nanoporous membranes. A layer transfer and lamination technique is used to fabricate flexible microchannels from spin-on polyimi ...

A steerable device for use as e.g. a guidewire for insertion into a subject's body is disclosed. The device features a single side deflection of a bendable portion located at its distal end by application of a longitudinally-directed force either on an inn ...

The goal of this experiment was to determine the electrical properties of the tissue reaction to implanted microelectrode arrays. We describe a new method of analyzing electrical impedance spectroscopy data to determine the complex impedance of the tissue ...

The project presented in this paper aims at defining the limits of microsystems through the realisation of a navigation system based on inertial microsensors. The work includes (i) design, fabrication, characterisation of accelerometers and angular rate sensors, (ii) development of techniques for simulation of sensor behaviour, and (iii) design of a sensor data processing system.

We present a novel method for on-chip competitive dispersion immunoassay (DISIA) which aims at measuring the specificity between fluorescently-labeled antibodies (Ab*) and label-free antigens (Ag). We have fabricated a nanofluidic device that allows fast d ...

A novel fabrication method based on the local sputtering of photoresist sidewalls during ion beam etching is presented. This method allows for the manufacture of three-dimensional multimaterial nanostructures at the wafer scale in only four process steps. ...

The pipetting of small volumes, typically ranging between a few and one thousand microliters (mu l), is widely used in many laboratories and essentially relies on air displacement to aspirate and dispense the liquid contained in a small plastic tip. ...

Arsenic and other pollutants are often present in trace amounts in drinking water in a number of countries. In aqueous solutions the sensitivity of arsenic- responsive bacterial bioreporters is far better than the performance of chemical field test kits. H ...

This paper describes the design, fabrication and experimental results of a new, low cost, high-performance silicon micropump developed for a disposable drug delivery system. The pump chip demonstrates linear and accurate (+/-5%) pumping characteristics for ...
