The differentiation of mesenchymal stromal cells has been shown to be af- fected by many parameters such as morphogens, flow rate, medium viscosity, and shear stress when exposed to fluid flow. The mechanism by which these cells sense their environment is ...

The goal of the present work was assess the feasibility of using a pseudo-inverse and null-space optimization approach in the modeling of the shoulder biomechanics. The method was applied to a simplified musculoskeletal shoulder model. The mechanical syste ...

BackgroundTotal shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) for primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis with B2-B3 glenoids is challenging due to the relatively high rate of postoperative complications, such as glenoid implant loosening. Machine learning (ML) is a promising method for predicting outcomes in shoulder arthroplasty. However, no studies have included preoperative radiological data to predict surgical complications using ML. The present study evaluated the potential of ML in predicting the occurrence of complicatio

Micromotion-induced interstitial fluid flow at the bone-implant interface has been proposed to play an important role in aseptic loosening of cementless implants. High fluid velocities are thought to promote aseptic loosening through activation of osteocla ...

The fixation of an orthopedic implant depends strongly upon its initial stability. Peri-implant bone may resorb shortly after the surgery. This resorbtion is directly followed by new bone formation and implants fixation strengthening, the so-called seconda ...

A vast majority of the available biomechanical models of the human shoulder has been developed based on inverse dynamics, e.g. [1,2]. This imposes a number of limitations on their application. For instance, the glenohumeral joint is approximated as an idea ...

Hypothesis: We hypothesized that biomechanical parameters typically associated with glenoid implant failure after anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) would be correlated with preoperative glenoid bone quality. Methods: We developed an objective aut ...

Background: Static posterior subluxation of the humeral head (SPSH) results in glenohumeral osteoarthritis. Treatment strategies for SPSH with or without resulting osteoarthritis remain challenging. There is growing interest in evaluating the rotator cuff ...

Estimation of muscle forces in over-actuated musculoskeletal models involves optimal distributions of net joint moments among muscles by a standard load-sharing scheme (SLS). Given that co-contractions of antagonistic muscles are counterproductive in the n ...

Transdermal drug delivery is a key technology for administering drugs. However, most devices are "one-size-fits-all", even though drug diffusion through the skin varies significantly from person-to-person. For next-generation devices, personalization for o ...

Aims Tobacco, in addition to being one of the greatest public health threats facing our world, is believed to have deleterious effects on bone metabolism and especially on bone healing. It has been described in the literature that patients who smoke are ap ...

Background Modular fluted tapered (MFT) stems are widely used in femoral revision surgery for their ability to achieve diaphyseal fixation in the setting of bone loss. This study aimed to identify factors influencing MFT stem subsidence. Methods We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 443 femoral revision procedures performed at a single institution, all using the same model of MFT stem. A total of 180 procedures met the inclusion criteria (≥ four radiographs) and were analyzed for subsidence during follow-

Background and Objective: While there is a reported correlation between shoulder condition and scapular morphology, the precise impact of typical anatomical variables remains a subject of ongoing debate. This study aimed to evaluate this causal association ...

BackgroundAseptic loosening of glenoid implants is the primary revision cause in anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). While supported by biomechanical studies, the impact of glenoid bone quality, more specifically bone mineral density (BMD), on ase ...

Wear of polyethylene is associated with aseptic loosening of orthopaedic implants and has been observed in hip and knee prostheses and anatomical implants for the shoulder. The reversed shoulder prostheses have not been assessed as yet. We investigated the ...

Accurate CT bone segmentation is essential to develop chair-side manufacturing of implants based on additive manufacturing. We herewith present an automated method able to accurately segment challenging bone regions, while simultaneously providing anatomic ...

Background Factors associated with injuries and performance have been less studied in trail running than in road running. Our original research carried out on a large sample of trail runners had 3 aims: 1) describe the habits and health of runners 2) evaluate the causal effect of training variables, anthropometric factors, lifestyle, recovery on the incidence of injuries 3) evaluate causal effect of these parameters on performance. Methods We developed a 65 questions trail-running-specific survey including

Introduction: The olecranon Chevron osteotomy (OCO) is commonly used to approach complex intraarticular fractures of the distal humerus. Predrilled tension band wiring (TBW) has historically been used to fix OCO. However, clinical outcomes are burdened by ...

Current homogenized finite element (hFE) models of the patella lack a validated material law and mostly overlook trabecular anisotropy. The objective of this study was to identify the elastic constants of patellar trabecular bone. Using mu CT scans of 20 f ...

Total joint replacements are highly successful in relieving pain and restoring movement of damaged joints. However, the lifespan of the implants is limited. The implant’s long-term stability depends largely on the preservation of periprosthetic bone. Debri ...
