Bone defects in revision knee arthroplasty (RKA) are often located in load-bearing regions. The goal of this study was to determine if a physiologic load could be used as an in situ osteogenic signal to the scaffolds filling the bone defects. In order to a ...

BackgroundOpen reduction and plate osteosynthesis are considered as a successful technique for the treatment of proximal humerus fracture (PHF) despite high complication rates. The objective of our study was to review the clinical outcome and complications ...

Background: The effect of shoulder pathologies on glenoid bone mineral density (BMD) remains unclear and can be critical in surgical treatments. It is thus useful to predict this effect and understand how it is influenced by sex, age, and body mass index (BMI), in various glenoid locations. Methods: To address this question, we developed a causal model and used do-calculus to identify the minimal adjustment set of covariate variables and developed a varying-intercept varying-slope Bayesian model. We consid

A combined experimental/numerical study was performed to calculate the 3D octahedral shear strain map in a mouse tibia loaded axially. This study is motivated by the fact that the bone remodelling analysis, in this in vivo mouse model should be performed a ...

A good primary stability of cementless femoral stems is essential for the long-term success of total hip arthroplasty. Experimental measurement of implant micromotion with linear variable differential transformers is commonly used to assess implant primary ...

Total ankle replacement remains a less satisfactory solution compared to other joint replacements. The goal of this study was to develop and validate a finite element model of total ankle replacement, for future testing of hypotheses related to clinical is ...

Background:Tibial tubercle osteotomy (TTO) is rarely required to achieve adequate exposure during complex revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Although generally considered a salvage option, concerns persist regarding its potential complications and impact on postoperative function, and clinical data remain limited. This study aimed to describe the clinical and radiographic outcomes of aseptic revision TKA requiring TTO; outcomes from cases revised without TTO are reported as contextual, exploratory data

A theoretical model and numerical methods were developed for testing different bone internal remodelling stimuli. The keystone of the study was the formulation of a stimulus based on the mechanical invariants of the stress tensor, which took into account bone non-homogeneity and anisotropy. A non-site specific remodelling rate equation was then used for the apparent density whereas anisotropy was fixed and evaluated from anatomic observations. An node-based semi-implicit algorithm with adaptive stepsize was

Medialization of the cup with a respective increase in femoral offset has been proposed in THA to increase abductor moment arms. Insofar as there are potential disadvantages to cup medialization, it is important to ascertain whether the purported biomechan ...

Objectives: To develop and validate an open-source deep learning model for automatically quantifying scapular and glenoid morphology using CT images of normal subjects and patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis. Materials and Methods: First, we used dee ...

Partial-thickness tears of the supraspinatus tendon frequently occur at its insertion on the greater tubercule of the humerus, causing pain and reduced strength and range of motion. The goal of this work was to quantify the loss of loading capacity due to tendon tears at the insertion area. A finite element model of the supraspinatus tendon was developed using in vivo magnetic resonance images data. The tendon was represented by an anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive law identified with experimental measu

Inappropriate patellar cut during total knee arthroplasty can lead to patellar complications due to increased bone strain. In this study, we evaluated patellar bone strain of a patient who had a deeper patellar cut than the recommended. A patient-specific model based on patient preoperative data was created. The model was decoupled into two levels: knee and patella. The knee model predicted kinematics and forces on the patella during squat movement. The patella model used these values to predict bone strain

Subject-specific modelling of Total Knee Arthroplasty could be an efficient method to preoperatively evaluate surgical options. In particular, the question of the necessity of patellar resurfacing is still a debatable issue. The aim of this work was to val ...

Glenoid implant loosening remains a major source of failure and concern after anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). It is assumed to be associated with eccentric loading and excessive bone strain, but direct measurement of bone strain after aTSA i ...

Background: The rotator cuff muscles are the main stabilizer of the glenohumeral joint. After total shoulder arthroplasty using anterior approaches, a dysfunction of the subscapularis muscle has been reported. In the present paper we tested the hypothesis ...

Tibial bone defect is a critical problem for revision knee arthroplasty. Instead of using metallic spacer or cement, biodegradable scaffolds could be an alternative solution. A numerical model of a revision knee arthroplasty was thus developed to estimate ...

Peri-implant bone resorption after total joint arthroplasty is a key parameter in aseptic loosening. Implant wear debris and biomechanical aspects have both been demonstrated to be part of the bone resorption process. However, neither of these two paramete ...

A new dynamical model of the shoulder has been developed. It consists of eleven muscles. The glenohumeral joint, modeled as a spherical joint, allows three rotations and blocks the translations. Muscle wrapping around a spherical humeral head is calculated ...

Background: Rotator cuff muscle degeneration is an important parameter to consider when planning shoulder arthroplasty. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that rotator cuff muscle degeneration is correlated with scapulohumeral subluxation in patients planned for ...

Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is an effective treatment for glenohumeral (GH) osteoarthritis. However, it still suffers from a substantial rate of mechanical failure, which may be related to cyclic off-center loading of the humeral head on the glenoid. ...
