Hydroelectric power plants are known for their ability to cover variations of the consumption in electrical power networks. In order to follow this changing demand, hydraulic machines are subject to off-design operation. In that case, the swirling flow lea ...

Numerical simulations of the transient operation of an islanded power network subject to load rejections are performed. The islanded power network case study consists of a 1-GW hydroelectric power plant featuring four generating units, a long penstock, and ...

The present paper investigates transient overvoltages on ac induction motors when connected through a cable of arbitrary length to IGBT-PWM inverters. Considering classical transmission line analysis, and traveling-wave analysis with zero initial charges o ...

This paper presents a numerical simulation study of the transient behavior of a 2x340MW pump-turbine power plant, where the results show an unstable behavior at runaway. First, the modeling of hydraulic components based on equivalent schemes is presented. ...

Power plants are subject to introduce disturbances in the power grid, resulting from interactions with the dynamical behavior of the energy source subsystem. In the case of hydropower plants when used to compensate for variations of power generation and co ...

This paper presents the modeling, simulation and analysis of the dynamic behavior of a mixed islanded power network of 780 MVA comprising hydro, thermal and wind power plants. The modeling of each power plant is fully described. The model of the variable speed pump-turbine unit includes hydraulic system, electrical equipments, rotating inertias and control systems. The power plants are connected to five passive consumer loads via a 500 kV electrical line network. First, the capability of the pumped storage

The paper presents a novel methodology for the operation of those hydro power plants provided with a single penstock by the optimal distribution of the dispatched power among its available generating units, aiming at the maximum efficiency of the whole pow ...

One of the primary tasks of Pumped Storage Power Plants (PSPP) in this era of rapidly growing renewable energy sources like wind and solar energy is to provide for energy storage while contributing to the stabilization of the electrical grid. Fast reaction to power unbalances and grid fluctuations may be achieved by using various configurations/types of pumped storage power plants, such as: - pump-turbines with fixed speed designed for fast reaction times - pump-turbines with variable speed - ternary units

This paper deals with a combined analytical-numerical approach for the study of the steady-state and transient behaviour of three-phase transformers. This approach based on magnetic equivalent circuits, takes into account the nonlinear B-H curve. The nonli ...

In large cities, due to expensive land price, high-rise buildings are built, in which the space dedicated to the elevators is considerable and reduces the rented surfaces. To decrease these lost surfaces, a multi mobile system is proposed. It consists of s ...

The present paper deals with a new approach for the study of the steady-state and transient behavior of three-phase transformers. This approach based on magnetic equivalent circuit-diagrams, takes into account the nonlinear BH curve as well as zero- sequence flux. The nonlinear BH curve is represented by a Fourier series, based on a set of measurement data. For the numerical simulations, two methods have been developed, by considering the total magnetic flux respectively the currents as state variables. Num

The adoption of the best available estimate for the stator Leakage reactance is the first step in several equivalent circuit of synchronous machine parameter estimation. However, there is no specific test for its direct measurement. This paper presents a s ...

In industrial variable speed drives, the supply of low voltage induction motors by IGBT-PWM inverters through screened cables may cause dangerous over-voltage surges at the motors terminals. These voltage peaks of about twice the de link voltage, with a short rise time of about 200 nsec, increase the armature insulation stress and may damage the motor insulation. The prsent study provides a theoretical approach to this matter and is completed by tests performed on two 3 and 7.5 kW drives, with different cab

The aim of the present paper is 10 investigate two types of SSR countermeasures: a) Phase shifters used to modulate the generator real power b) Static VAR compensator (SVC) and its auxiliary controllers. An eigenvalue analysis method is used to study the effectiveness of these countermeasures in damping SSR on the second system of the second IEEE SSR Benchmark model. The method is based on the linearization of the coupled electrical and mechanical equations under small perturbations. An analytical expressio

The eigenvalues analysis method is generally applied to synchronous machines by using d,q-components. This paper presents the application of this method on an equivalent model for the synchronous machine based on phase variables a,b,c instead of d,q-components. The advantages of this approach, essential for programs using phase variables as state variables, are presented. The application of this method to a complete hydroelectric production site including hydraulic components (pump-turbine, penstock, galler
