The paper deals with the main problems to solve in order to simulate precisely the behavior of complex power systems with mixed elements (power components and digital regulation devices). The main features of an efficient simulation tool are described. They are focused on modern adjustable speed drives. Finally, the simulation of an industrial application of an induction motor fed by a three-level inverter tuned with a DTC (Direct Torque Control) is presented in details.

This paper presents the modeling, simulation and analysis of the dynamic behavior of a hydroelectric power plant of 2x343 MVA including hydraulic system, electrical installations, rotating inertias and control systems. First, the modeling of the electrical ...

The paper deals with the main problems to solve in order to simulate precisely the behavior of complex power systems with mixed elements (power components and digital regulation devices). A simulation tool developed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is shortly described. Finally, an industrial application of an induction motor fed by a three-level inverter tuned with a DTC (Direct Torque Control) is presented.

Shaft systems of large turbine-generators can be subjected to high torsional stresses due to subsynchronous resonance especially in networks with capacitor- compensated lines. A second benchmark model for computer simulation of this phenomena has been proposed recently [1]. This one, more realistic in actual operation of a power system, permits to compare different analytic methods and simulations realized on this subject. It provides specifically two system configurations as benchmark models:

The present paper describes a stator flux oriented control strategy using state space controllers. The optimal determination of different controllers'parameters (suitable placement of poles, continuous adapation of coefficients to the operating point of the drive) leads to an independent control of the stator flux and the torque in different operating conditions, and consequently to good dynamic performances of the drive. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified by computer simulation. The contr

The present paper deals with a new approach for the study of the steady-state and transient behaviour of phase transformers. This approach based on magnetic equivalent circuit diagrams, takes into account the nonlinear B-H curves as well as zero-sequence f ...

The present paper describes the modelling and the prediction of the steady-state or transient behaviour of different modern variable-speed drives and electrical networks. The necessity of a performant numerical simulation tool in order to guarantee an optimized design is illustrated by examples based on existing large variable- speed drives and power plants.

The present paper describes the modeling of 3-level Unified Power Flow Controllers (UPFC) with their control systems for studying the steady-state and transient behavior of electrical networks equipped with FACTS devices. The control features of these devi ...

This paper presents the start-up and synchronization procedures of large variable- speed pump-turbine units in pumping mode. These procedures applied to a doubly-fed induction motor-generator with three-level voltage source inverters VSI cascade in the rot ...

This paper presents the start-up and synchronization procedures of a variable-speed pump-turbine unit of 250 MW in pumping mode. These procedures applied to a doubly-fed induction motor-generator with three-level voltage source inverters VSI cascade in the rotor side, can be achieved without any supplementary equipment. The control strategy used in the start-up procedure and based on a stator flux oriented control, is described in details as well as different steps in order to reach the minimal speed requir

The aim of the proposed paper is to extend the well known complex torque coefficient method for synchronous machine rotor oscillations, to auxiliary devices (voltage regulators, power system stabilizers (PSS), ...) in electrical networks. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed extension, the study is performed on a model power system. Results obtained by this method are compared with those given, in the one hand, by an eigenvalue analysis, and in the other hand by numerical simultations.

The goal of the paper was to analyze the current distribution of a high-power salient-pole synchronous machine damper winding. A few methods were considered but only two analytical methods are highlighted. Both methods arc based on parameter calculation by ...

The integration of wind power in power systems results in a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, it has a positive environmental impact. However, the operation of these power systems becomes increasingly complex, owing mainly to random behaviour of ...

This paper presents the modeling, simulation and analysis of the dynamic behavior of a mixed power network of 2.78 GW including hydro, thermal and wind power plants. The modeling of each power plant is described. The set of parameters of the turbine speed ...

This paper describes a stator flux oriented control strategy using state space controllers. The optimal determination of the different controllers parameters leads to an independent control of the stator flux and the torque. The effects of undesired offsets on the calculated stator flux are discussed and a solution for eliminating these offset is presented Verification by computer simulation and results of the control implementation on a Motorola DSP 56002 are presented

The present paper addresses an advanced teaching lab consisting of setting up an islanded production unit. This teaching lab takes place in the very last semester at master level for students in electrical engineering with energy specialization. The purpos ...

The present paper describes the implementation of an industrial regulator in a real time Hardware-In-the-Loop simulation of a mixed islanded power network including precise models of the hydraulic system. The studied network is composed of three different types of electrical power generation systems and a consumer.

The present paper addresses the practical implementation in a test bench of different control strategies for the start-up of a varspeed group in pump mode. In varspeed groups using a double-fed induction machine supplied by back to back voltage source inve ...
