Titanate nanowires (TiONWs) are synthesized through the hydrothermal method and characterized in acidic aqueous dispersions by using electrophoresis, dynamic light scattering, and atomic force microscopy. The TiONWs have a rodlike shape with an average len ...

As carriers are introduced into the cuprates (by doping the insulating "parent" compounds) spectral weight appears in the optical spectrum at photon energies below the charge-transfer gap. This spectral weight increases as the doping level increases. Magnetic penetration depth measurements have shown a good correlation between superfluid density and superconducting transition temperature in the underdoped-to-optimally-doped part of the phase diagram. Optical measurements allow independent determination of t

The low temperature microwave absorption anomaly reported by Corzilius et al. [Phys. Rev. B 75, 235416 (2007)] in single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is revisited. It was originally reported that the microwave absorption of CVD grown SWCNTs shows an unex ...

In this chapter we demonstrate the use of optical trapping interferometry to track and study the motion of a Brownian particle down to hydrodynamic timescales, where the response of the surrounding viscous fluid becomes dominant. A Brownian particle rapidly explores its surrounding medium that in turn alters its trajectory, and hence functions as a probe of its local environment. After an introduction to fundamental aspects of the theory of Brownian motion, which are very often ignored by experimentalists,

A high-throughput fabrication of sub-10 nm nanogap electrodes combined with solid-state nanopores is described. These devices should allow concomitant tunneling and ionic current detection of translocating DNA molecules. We report the optimal fabrication p ...

The crystals of a novel family of rare-earth borate-nitrate compounds, Ln(7)(BO3)(3) (NO3)N3O (Ln = Pr, Nd), were grown at high-pressure in KAs flux and their crystal structure was determined. The new type of the crystalline structure consists of parallel ...

The crystal structure of the pristine (I) and aged (II) crystals of CH3NH3PbI3 (hereafter MAPbI(3)) hybrid organic-inorganic lead iodide has been studied at 293 K with high-precision single-crystal X-ray diffraction using a synchrotron light source. We sho ...

Proximity-induced superconductivity in a ferromagnet can induce Cooper pairs with a finite center-of-mass momentum and stabilize Josephson junctions (JJs) with pi phase difference in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor heterostructures. The emergence ...

We employed electron spin resonance (ESR) technique in the investigation of a series of graphene flakes with different size distributions. Graphene oxide (GO) samples with three distinct size distributions were prepared by the Brodie method. Large flakes of similar to 2500 mu m(2), intermediate size flakes of similar to 1 mu m(2), and small ones of 500 nm(2) have been characterized by ESR in the 4-295 K temperature range. Already for GO flakes the magnetic response strongly varies with their size. Large GO

Numerous contemporary investigations in condensed matter physics are devoted to high temperature (high-T-c) cuprate superconductors. Despite its unique effulgence among research subjects, the enigma of the high-T-c mechanism still persists. One way to adva ...

An efficient, visible light active, N, S-codoped TiO2-based photocatalyst was prepared by reacting thiourea with nanoparticulate anatase TiO2. Commercial anatase powders were manually ground with thiourea and annealed at 400 degrees C in two crucibles with ...

The anharmonic response of charge-density wave (CDW) order to strong laser-pulse perturbations in 1T-TaS2 and TbTe3 is investigated by means of multiple-pump-pulse time-resolved femtosecond optical spectroscopy. We observe remarkable anharmonic effects hit ...

Here we report another surprising feature of the methylammonium metal halide material family, the phototunability of the diode response of a heterojunction made of CH3NH3PbI3 and its close relative, CH3NH3SnI3. In the dark state the device behaves as a dio ...

By a micro-experimental methodology, we study the ongoing molecular process inside coarse fibrin networks by means of microrheology. We made these networks gelate around a probe microbead, allowing us to observe a temporal evolution compatible with the wel ...

We have investigated the optical absorption of metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes/CH3NH3PbI3 micro- and nanowire composites. Upon visible light illumination semiconducting carbon nanotube based samples show a photo-induced doping, originating fro ...

The infrared reflectance of the transition-metal chalcogenide 1T-TaS2 has been measured at temperatures from 30 K to 360 K over 30-45 000 cm(-1) (4 meV-5.5 eV). The optical conductivity was obtained by Kramers-Kronig analysis. At 360 K only modest traces of the phonon lines are noticeable. The phonon modes are followed by a pseudo-gap-like increase of the optical conductivity, with direct optical transitions observed at frequencies above 1 eV. As the temperature decreases, the low-frequency conductivity als

Biosensors benefit from specific nano- to monitor human metabolites [1], [2]. Moreover, small structuration of the active bio-interface layer. In this electrodes allow us to design many sensing sites, each perspective, a wide range of carbon nanomaterials ...

Alkali-intercalated graphite compounds represent a compelling modification of carbon with significant application potential and various fundamentally important phases. The intercalation of graphite with alkali atoms (Li and K) using liquid ammonia solution ...

The motion of an optically trapped sphere constrained by the vicinity of a wall is investigated at times where hydrodynamic memory is significant. First, we quantify, in bulk, the influence of confinement arising from the trapping potential on the sphere's ...

During their production, single-walled carbon nanotubes form bundles. Owing to the weak van der Waals interaction that holds them together in the bundle, the tubes can easily slide on each other, resulting in a shear modulus comparable to that of graphite. This low shear modulus is also a major obstacle in the fabrication of macroscopic fibres composed of carbon nanotubes. Here, we have introduced stable links between neighbouring carbon nanotubes within bundles, using moderate electron-beam irradiation ins
