Total DNA extraction is the key stage allowing the implementation of various downstream applications in molecular ecology. The widespread application of downstream technologies has led to an increasing demand for highly pure biomolecules. Manual methods and proprietary extraction kits used for the purification of nucleic acids can be laborious and time‐consuming. The breadth of sample types encountered and the increasing number of samples processed result in seeking new ways to enhance sample preparation ef

The present study assessed the suitability of using QuEChERS procedure for the simultaneous deter- mination and quantification of 37 multi-class pesticides in human hair. Matrix co-eluted material had a large influence on instrumental response sensitivity. ...

Exceedance of MRLs might induce a risk for the consumers and limits the opportunities of exportation for a sector identified by the authorities as having a great potential for the fight against poverty. In the same way, levels of some water samples exceed both the 0.1 μg/l limit for pesticides taken individually and the 0.5 μg/l limit for the sum of pesticides recommended for drinking water in the EU. Over the 70 individual diets assessed, 3 and 8 yield respectively an acute and chronic cumulative risk for

This study examines the distribution, abundance and characteristics of surface micro- and mesoplastic debris in the Western Mediterranean Sea. 41 samples were collected in 2011 (summer) and 2012 (summer). Results, firstly, revealed that micro- (

Several interlaboratory exercises were organised within the framework of European FP6 project NOR-MAN Among others. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were investigated in different aqueous samples in two sequential ring studies. The aim of both studies ...

This study proposes a comprehensive assessment of water resources contamination by pesticides in a gardening area. Multiresidue extraction procedure was developed to quantify 48 pesticides identified during field surveys. Drinking water samples were collected from traditional wells, boreholes and the lake. Levels of azadirachtin, chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid and profenofos in traditional wells exceed the threshold limit of 0.1 μg/l indicating a potential risk for the consumers. Residues of acetamiprid, atrazi

Although polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) production was brought to a halt 30 years ago, recalcitrance to degradation makes them a major environmental pollutant at a global scale. Previous studies confirmed that organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) were ...

In Vietnam, intensive shrimp farms heavily rely on a wide variety of antibiotics (ABs) to treat animals or prevent disease outbreak. Potential for the emergence of multi-resistant bacteria is high, with the concomitant contamination of adjacent natural aqu ...

This study firstly aims to assess the field performances of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and silicone rubber (SR) samplers for the monitoring of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in water regarding the uptake, the sam- pling rate (RS) estimated by using ...

In this investigation, a new, green photo-Fenton process for wastewater treatment is proposed, involving the use of a natural iron source and natural additives, deriving from wastes, acting as iron chelators. The use of mineral iron as precursor in the pho ...

This is a comparative study of photolytic degradation under exposure to UV254 nm and solar-simulator irradiation of a mixture of eight equally concentrated relevant micropollutants (atenolol, benzotriazole, clarithromycin, gabapentin, methylbenzotriazole, metformin, metoprolol and primidone; 2 µM of each compound) in the presence of H2O2 and Fe(II) in ultrapure water, Lake Geneva water, and effluent from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The results indicate that the oxidation rate increased in the prese

A growing number of studies focusing on microplastics (plastic particles smaller than 5 mm) show this issue affects all environmental matrices and compartments, and suspicions grow as to their toxicity. In this context, the Commission Internationale pour la Protection des Eaux du Léman (CIPEL) has mandated EPFL's Central Environmental Laboratory (GR-CEL) for an exploratory study on twelve benthic sediment samples from Lake Geneva. Samples have been sieved in 3 size classes (> 300 µm, > 1 mm, > 5 mm), plasti

Presentation on the levels of perfluorinated compounds in aquatic environment in Switzerland. Different matrices are studied: sediments, fish, food, wastewater.

An analytical method for the quantification of the widely used herbicide, glyphosate, its main by-product, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and the herbicide glufosinate at trace level was developed and tested in different aqueous matrices. Their derivati ...

Vegetables and water samples have been collected around the lake of Loumbila in Burkina Faso. Pesticides resi- dues in food commodities were analyzed using a modified QuEChERS extraction method prior analysis on GC-MS and UPLC-MS/MS of 31 pesticides. Maxim ...

Sulfonylurea herbicides represent new pollutants of growing concern, which requires their continuous monitoring in the aquatic environment. Widely used for pre and post emergence control of broadleaf and grassy weeds in different crops, designed to offer advantages of the highest selectivity together with the lower persistence in the environment, by using relatively low application rates, typically less than 100 g of active ingredient per hectare. The objective of this study was the determination of the Rs
