The occurrence and removal of 58 pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and pesticides, were assessed in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of the city of Lausanne, Switzerland, as well as in the effluent-receiving water ...

In this study, wastewater from the output of three different secondary treatment facilities (Activated Sludge, Moving Bed Bioreactor and Coagulation-Flocculation) present in the municipal wastewater treatment plant of Vidy, Lausanne (Switzerland), was furt ...

Two parcels of the Lavaux vineyard area, western Switzerland, were studied to assess to which extent the widely used herbicide, glyphosate, and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) were retained in the soil or exported to surface waters. They w ...

This study focuses on the removal of 22 selected micropollutants in an effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP) at pilot scale. A reactor of 37 L with five low pressure mercury lamps emitting at 254 nm (UV254) was used. The 22 micropollu ...

In this work, solar disinfection (SODIS) was enhanced by moderate addition of Fe and sodium perox- ydisulfate (PDS), under solar light. A systematic assessment of the activating factors was performed, firstly isolated, then in pairs and concluded in the co ...

The emergence and the spreading of antibiotic resistant (AR) bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are considered currently as a growing issue for human health. Shrimp farmers in Viet Nam have access to and make use of a wide variety of antibiotics and other chemicals to treat animals or prevent disease outbreak in their farms, but very little data are now available about the effects of these substances on bacterial communities. In this study, molecular analysis and microbiological cultures carrie

Passive sampling has been shown to be a good alternative to grab sampling. Because of the in-situ accumulation in samplers, limits of quantitation are low enough to measure organic pollutants in water. In addition, integrative passive samplers enable to sequester pollutants from episodic pollution and provide time weighted average (TWA) concentrations. Finally, they do not require a power supply in the field and are flexible enough to be deployed at sites that are difficult to access. This study will presen

This study proposes a comprehensive approach to investigate water resource contamination by pesticides under the specific climatic and hydrological conditions of the Sudano-Sahelian climate. Samples were collected from tradi- tional wells, boreholes, and a ...

The determination of polar organic contaminants (pesticides, pharmaceuticals and inhibitors of corrosion) in river water was carried out using POCIS as a passive sampling technique and UPLC-MS/MS as a determination technique. Several compounds with properties similar to studied pollutants were evaluated as potential PRCs. Only DIA-d5 and 5-Methylbenzotriazol-d3 (5-TT-d3) were linearly released from HLB sorbent. As far as we know, 5-TT-d3 was used as PRC for the first time in POCIS. Both compounds could corr

Due to its situation of “Europe’s water reservoir”, Switzerland has a particular responsibility towards downstream countries. It must ensure an optimal quality of its surface waters, following thus the example of the EU members which have to reach by 2015 the good status for surface water set by the Water Frame Directive. In order to achieve that goal, there is a need to localize sources of pollution to reduce emissions to water. In this study, an investigation was conduct along the “Venoge” River to locali

The purpose of this study was to assess the quality of bottom sediment collected in the Bay of Vidy (Lake Geneva, Switzerland) which receives sewage treatment plant discharges from the city of Lausanne and its surroundings. Thirty-eight sediment samples were taken, forming a dense network. Samples of that portion of the sediment that has accumulated since phosphorus removal (via iron precipitation) was instituted at the plant in 1971 were analysed for heavy metals, nutrients and organic micropollutants and

This study shows the efficiency of passive sampling to reveal industrial and agricultural pollution trends. Two practical applications for nonpolar and polar contaminants are presented. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) samplers were deployed for one year in ...

Although PCBs production was brought to a halt thirty years ago, recalcitrance to degradation makes them a major environmental pollutant. Previous studies confirmed that organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) were capable of utilizing chlorinated congeners as sole electron acceptor using reductive dehalogenases. OHRB belonging to the Phylum Chloroflexi and Firmicutes are considered as the main degradation drivers. In this study, we aimed at exploring degradation contributions by other taxa using sediment-fr

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are universal environmental contaminants that have attracted great concern because of their worldwide distribution, persistence in the environment and possible harmful effects. Recycling old objects or materials containing PCBs and former disposal sites, could potentially contaminate surface waters. According to previous studies, it appears that in some Swiss rivers, the concentration of PCBs in fish were above the limits proposed by EU, indicating a contamination which is c

Initiated in 2015 by the Race for Water Foundation,
the Race for Water Odyssey is an environmental expedition which sailed across Atlantic, Pacific & Indian Oceans. It has 3 main goals: i) analyse plastic pollution on beaches of remote islands; ii) raise awareness about water plastic pollution; iii) identify solutions to prevent waste from ending in the ocean. Results: High inter-archipelago and inter-beaches variability of micro-plastic concentrations for this worldwide study The North and South Pacific Gy

Aquatic pollution due to plastics, and especially microplastics, is becoming the subject of growing research together with an increasing awareness of their environmental harm. While most of the studies focus on oceans, the situation regarding lakes remains ...

Tools able to investigate pollution sources at low cost are urgently needed to achieve the requirements of the Water Frame Directive and international treaties (such as the Stockholm Convention) which are to reduce, or even cease, pollution emissions to water and other parts of the environment. Based on in-situ experiments on PCBs, this study assesses the use of passive sampling as a tool to investigate point sources of hydrophobic pollutants in rivers. The proposed methodology deploys passive samplers down

Vietnam is one of the largest shrimp exporters in the world. Intensive shrimp farming uses a lot of insecticides to sanitize the shrimp ponds and antibiotics for the prevention of diseases. The aims of this study are to develop a passive sampling method for evaluation of fifteen antibiotics and pesticides in the surface water and determine the contamination of surface waters by these compounds in Can Gio district – Ho Chi Minh City and Long An province, two major intensive shrimp farming sites in Southern V

In order to protect conifer logs against attacks from the striped ambrosia beetle (Trypodendron lineatum ) during spring in Swiss forests, logs are treated with the insecticide cypermethrin. Rainfall can cause the insecticide to leach into the ground, pote ...

In this work, a method combining polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) and ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was assessed for the determination of two corrosion inhibitors (benzotriazole ...
