The surface properties and the electrochem. behavior of a fluorinated B-doped diamond (F-BDD) electrode prepd. by plasma treatment in CF4-He mixt. was studied by XPS and cyclic voltammetry in acidic media. The results showed C-F bonding (C-CF and C-F) on the surface of F-BDD, which made the surface more hydrophobic. Also hydrogen evolution was shifted to more cathodic potentials for fluorinated diamond, as compared with untreated BDD. Finally, the higher cathodic overpotential for hydrogen evolution permitt

The catalytic activity of an IrO2 catalyst used as an electrode on a YSZ solid electrolyte cell for the gas-phase combustion of ethylene can be increased by electrochem. pretreatment. Thus, the polarization of the IrO2 electrode during 90 min at 300 mA, relative to a gold electrode, both deposited on YSZ, increases the activity of the IrO2 catalyst after current interruption by a factor of 3. In situ catalyst work function measurements showed that after the electrochem. pretreatment the IrO2 catalyst obtain

The electrochem. promotion of RuO2 catalysts interfaced with yttria stabilized zirconia was studied for the combustion of ethylene. The complete oxidn. of ethylene can be described by an Eley-Rideal type mechanism. In situ work function measurements were used to proof the mechanism. A linear dependence between the catalyst work function and the surface coverage of the only adsorbed reactant, chemisorbed oxygen, was found. Cyclic voltammetric measurements were used to study the RuO2/YSZ interface. The electr

DSA type electrodes (IrOx/Ti) were prepd. by induction heating technique which allows a rapid decompn. of the precursor under anaerobic conditions. With this type of electrode, an activation process is obsd. in cyclic voltammetry which can be related to the presence of metallic Ir within the coatings. The electrooxidn. of alcs. in acid medium was studied by cyclic voltammetry. In the presence of alcs., a large current enhancement was obsd. at E >= 1.3 V/normal H electrode. This great reactivity can be due t

The electrochem. behavior of PbO2 and synthetic B-doped diamond thin film electrodes (BDDs) was studied in acid media contg. 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) by bulk electrolysis under different exptl. conditions. To quantify the electrochem. activity of a given electrode, for the electrochem. oxidn. of org. compds. (4-CP), the current efficiency of the anodic oxidn. was normalized taking into consideration mass-transport limitations. The normalized current efficiency (j) was defined as the ratio between the current e

Two methods were used for the deposition of Pt particles on synthetic B-doped diamond (BDD) surfaces: chem. deposition and electrodeposition under potentiostatic conditions. However, electrodeposition leads much higher Pt dispersion than chem. deposition. The mechanism of nucleation and growing of the electrodeposited Pt was studied by chronoamperometric studies in acid medium. The electrodeposition on diamond surfaces shows a mechanism of progressive nucleation as deduced from the chronoamperometric studie

B-doped diamond films were deposited by large-area hot filament chem. vapor deposition (HFCVD) on Si and different industrial electrode materials, such as Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, W, and graphite, with areas up to 50 * 60 cm2. B-doping levels ranging from 50 to several thousand ppm were realized using trimethylborate. These electrodes are characterized in terms of their material and electrochem. properties by SEM, Raman spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and cyclic voltammetry. Oxidn. of org. comp

Oxygen and hydrogen peroxide electroredn. on La0.6Ca0.4CoO3 perovskite electrodes was studied in alk. media. Rotating disk electrodes were built using pure powders of the oxide to avoid any side reactions on the catalyst support, e.g. carbon. For O2 redn., Koutecky-Levich plots showed a curvature at high rotation speeds (w), and the corresponding no. of electrons exchanged (n) varied from 1.3 to 2, depending on w. This behavior indicates that the main part of the oxygen was reduced via the 2 e- path, leadin

The anodic oxidn. of H2SO4 to H2S2O8 was investigated on B-doped synthetic diamond electrodes obtained by hot filament chem. vapor deposition. High current efficiency for H2S2O8 formation can be achieved in concd. H2SO4 (7.5 mol dm-3) and using high current densities (200 mA cm-2). The main side reaction is oxygen evolution. [on SciFinder (R)]

Surface redox activities, oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxidation of formic acid (FA), and anodic stability were investigated and compared for IrO2 electrodes prepared by two techniques: the thermal decomposition of H2IrCl6 precursor (TDIROF) and the an ...

The title compds., useful in the prodn. of dye intermediates, are prepd. in acid media in an electrolysis cell whose electrodes are sepd. by a membrane. At the cathode, anthraquinones are reductively cyclized with glycerol [56-81-5] to give the corresponding benzanthrones. In the anode chamber the oxidn. state of a transition metal ion is electrochem. increased by 1 and the resulting ion serves as a chem. oxidant for a planar polycyclic arom. compd. Thus, to the cathode chamber contg. 46.8 g anthraquinone [

A novel design for interdigitated band electrodes is described. The electrode is built by successive printing of conductive and insulating layers on a steel substrate. This geometry exhibits a high performance for the hypochlorite electrogeneration from seawater. The active chlorine concn. reached at the end of the electrolysis varies from 0.5 to 10 g L-1, depending on the no. of electrodes, their configuration in batch or single flow mode, the flow rate and the c.d. This geometry also limits scale developm

Synthetic boron doped diamond electrodes and microelectrodes were manufd. with techniques usually utilized in microelectronics: HFCVD coating, optical photolithog. and plasma etching. These electrodes were characterized in terms of their electrochem. properties: the overpotentials for O2 and H2 evolution, the reversibility for simple electron transfer reactions (ferri-ferrocyanide), complex electron transfer reactions (oxidn. of org. compds.), chlorine detection and O3 prodn. A comparison with other types o

Electrolysis of iohexol, an iodinated X-ray contrast medium, on synthetic boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin film electrodes was investigated for the first time. Kinetic experiments of electrochemical oxidation resulted in complete elimination of iohexol. Data from the kinetic experiments were compared against estimates by the kinetic model proposed previously by Comninellis et al. Excellent agreement between the experimental results and the kinetic model was observed. The results suggest that electrolysis on B

The cathodic properties are discussed of a ZrO2 layer formed on Zr by thermal treatment and by anodic oxidn. The electrosynthesis of ammonium peroxydisulfate (2SO42- .dblarw. S2O82- + 2e-) for which the cathodic redn. of persulfate to sulfate is the undesirable reaction is chosen as a typical industrial reaction to study the behavior of ZrO2 coated Zr cathodes towards the persulfate redn. and hydrogen evolution reactions. [on SciFinder (R)]

The catalytic activity for the gas phase combustion of ethylene of an IrO2 film, used as electrode in a solid electrolyte cell, can be increased by polarizing the metal-solid electrolyte interface. The catalytic activity remains higher even after current interruption. To explain the increase in the open circuit rate after polarization the authors speculate that the IrO2 catalyst is oxidized at the catalyst-solid electrolyte interface, forming IrO2+d which is transported by surface and/or bulk diffusion to t

We have investigated some anodic and cathodic transformations using boron doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. The oxidn. of a propargylic alc. as well as the arom. side chain oxidn. in water as electrolyte did not yield the desired products in high yield and s ...

A novel two-step method was developed to prep. gold nanoparticles on boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode. It consisted of sputter deposition of max. 15 equiv monolayers of gold, followed by a heat treatment at 400-600 Deg in air. The as-sputtered gold depo ...

In the electrolysis of a soln. contg. glucose, as a model substrate in the wastewater from food industry, and a dil. NaCl, the formation of active Cl makes the glucose mineralization at the stable DSA electrode substantially insensitive to the nature of the electrode surface. The mineralization rate being the same at Ti/Pt, Ti/PbO2, TiSnO2-Pt, and Ti/IrO2 electrode. [on SciFinder (R)]

A review is given on the so-called electrochem. promotion (EP) denoting an elec. controlled modification of the activity and/or selectivity of a heterogeneous catalyst. Efficient EP in dispersed catalyst systems can be achieved using porous solid-electrolyte supports or by the manufg. of microstructured electrochem. reactors. The combustion of ethylene over IrO2 or RuO2 catalysts and the redn. of NO with propylene over Rh catalysts were chosen as model catalytic systems. The catalysts are all deposited on Y
