Abstract

The cathodic properties are discussed of a ZrO2 layer formed on Zr by thermal treatment and by anodic oxidn. The electrosynthesis of ammonium peroxydisulfate (2SO42- .dblarw. S2O82- + 2e-) for which the cathodic redn. of persulfate to sulfate is the undesirable reaction is chosen as a typical industrial reaction to study the behavior of ZrO2 coated Zr cathodes towards the persulfate redn. and hydrogen evolution reactions. Electrode

An electrode is an electrical conductor used to make contact with a nonmetallic part of a circuit (e.g. a semiconductor, an electrolyte, a vacuum or air). Electrodes are essential parts of batteries that can consist of a variety of materials depending on the type of battery. The electrophore, invented by Johan Wilcke, was an early version of an electrode used to study static electricity. Electrodes are an essential part of any battery. The first electrochemical battery made was devised by Alessandro Volta and was aptly named the Voltaic cell.

Auxiliary electrode

In electrochemistry, the auxiliary electrode, often also called the counter electrode, is an electrode used in a three-electrode electrochemical cell for voltammetric analysis or other reactions in which an electric current is expected to flow. The auxiliary electrode is distinct from the reference electrode, which establishes the electrical potential against which other potentials may be measured, and the working electrode, at which the cell reaction takes place.

Cathodic protection

Cathodic protection (CP; kaeˈTQdIk) is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. A simple method of protection connects the metal to be protected to a more easily corroded "sacrificial metal" to act as the anode. The sacrificial metal then corrodes instead of the protected metal. For structures such as long pipelines, where passive galvanic cathodic protection is not adequate, an external DC electrical power source is used to provide sufficient current.
