X-ray nanotomography and focused ion beans scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) have been applied to investigate the complex 3D microstructure of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes at spatial resolutions of 45 nm and below. The application of near e ...

The electrochem. oxidn. of chloranilic acid (CAA) was studied in acidic media at Pb/PbO2, B-doped diamond (Si/BDD) and Ti/IrO2 electrodes by bulk electrolysis expts. under galvanostatic control. The obtained results have clearly shown that the electrode material is an important parameter for the optimization of such processes, deciding of their mechanism and of the oxidn. products. The oxidn. of CAA generates several intermediates eventually leading to its complete mineralization. Different current efficien

FEXRAV (Fixed Energy X-ray Absorption Voltammetry) has been recently introduced as a powerful tool in electrochemistry. It consists in measuring the X-ray absorption coefficient at a fixed X-ray energy while the electrochemical potential of the material un ...

The Cl2 evolution reaction was studied at highly boron-doped diamond thin film electrodes. The comparison of this carbonaceous material with graphite and glassy carbon points out the similar behavior in terms of diagnostic parameters and related mechanisms, without the mech. fragility of these materials. Tafel slopes at different chloride concns. in soln. (from 0.1-4 M NaCl in 0.01 M HClO4) and at different pHs were detd., together with the reaction orders with respect to Cl- and H+. All measurements were c

The electrochem. oxidn. (or combustion) of orgs. with simultaneous oxygen evolution has been investigated using different oxide electrodes. A simplified mechanism for the electrochem. oxidn. of orgs. is presented, according to which selective oxidn. occurs with oxide anodes (MOx) for which the formation of higher oxides (e.g.: MOx+1) is possible. Combustion occurs at electrodes with oxidatively satd. surface. Detection of OH radicals formed by water discharge at different anodes using N,N dimethyl-p-nitroso

A bipolar filter press-type elec. rechargeable Zn/O2 battery has been developed. Reticulated copper foam served as substrate for the zinc deposit on the anodic side, and La0.6Ca0.4CoO3-catalyzed bifunctional oxygen electrodes were used on the cathodic side of the cells. The 100 cm2 unit cell had an open-circuit voltage of 1.4 V (O2) in moderately alk. electrolyte. The open-circuit voltage and the peak power measured for a stack contg. seven cells were .apprx.10 V and .apprx.90 W, resp. The current-potential

The spark assisted chem. engraving (SACE) of glass has been investigated using current/voltage measurements combined with photographs of the tool electrode under different regimes. Depending on the applied potential, different domains have been identified. At low potentials (25 V), there are strong current fluctuations mainly due to bubble coalescence. The authors speculate that in this r

Phosphate remobilization from digested sewage sludge containing iron phosphate was scaled-up in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). A 3 litre triple chambered MFC was constructed. This reactor was operated as a microbial fuel cell and later as a microbial electro ...

The electrochemical oxidation of ammonia (NH3 and/or NH4+) in the presence of chloride was investigated on a Ti/PtOx-IrO2 electrode. It was shown that ammonia is effectively removed from solution via electrogenerated active chlorine. Based on mass balances ...

Efficient mixing in bioreactors is essential in order to avoid concentration gradients which can be harmful for mammalian cells. To study mixing and its scalability in orbitally shaken cylindrical bioreactors, we measured mixing times in containers with no ...

Ternary Pt-based nanoparticles (nominal composition Pt80Ru10Sn10 ) were synthesized via the microemulsion route and deposited onto boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode. The particle size measured by transmission electron microscopy was in the 2–5nm diam ran ...

The anodic oxidn. of 2-naphthol in acid media was studied at a synthetic boron-doped diamond thin film electrode (BDD) using cyclic voltammetry and bulk electrolysis. The results showed that in the potential region, where the supporting electrolyte is stable, reactions involving simple electron transfer, such as oxidn. of 2-naphthol to naphthoxy radical and 1,4-naphthoquinone occur. Polymeric materials, which lead to electrode fouling, are also formed in this potential region. Electrolysis at high pos. pote

The electrochemical oxidation of ammonia (NH4+/NH3) in sodium perchlorate was investigated on IrO2 electrodes prepared by two techniques: the thermal decomposition of H2IrCl6 precursor and the anodic oxidation of metallic iridium. The electrochemical behaviour of Ir(IV)/Ir(111) surface redox couple differs between the electrodes indicating that on the anodic iridium oxide film (AIROF) both, the surface and the interior of the electrode are electrochemically active whereas on the thermally decomposed iridium

Electrochem. oxidn. (or combustion) of orgs. with simultaneous O evolution was investigated using different electrode material (Pt, Ti/IrO2, Ti/SnO2). A simplified mechanism for org. electrochem. oxidn./combustion is presented according to which selective oxidn. occurs with oxide anodes (MOx) forming the so-called higher oxide MOx+1 and combustion occurs with electrodes at whose surface OH radicals accumulate. Detection of OH radicals formed by water discharge at different anodes using N, N-dimethyl-p-nitro

A review. Boron-doped diamond (BDD) thin films were grown on various substrates by chem. vapor deposition to achieve a new electrode material that possesses unique electrochem. properties. This electrodes could generate hydroxyl radicals under polarization at high anode potentials, and these hydroxyl radicals could be spin-trapped by 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO). The generated hydroxyl radicals had low electrochem. activity and high chem. reactivity, and these properties were attributed to the we

The electrochemical synthesis of peroxodicarbonate was performed on boron-doped DIACHEM((R)) diamond anodes (BDD). The influence of various parameters was studied and promising conditions were determined in an undivided cell design by CONDIAS GmbH. The bes ...

A review, with 29 refs., on the anodic oxidn. of orgs. in industrial wastewaters treatment. Direct electrochem. processes catalyzed by the O transfer reaction are discussed for several anode materials. Ti/SnO2 is particularly efficient for cold combustion of arom. pollutants. Processes involving the electrochem. generation of oxidants (O3, H2O2), or the electrochem. regeneration of metallic redox couples (Fenton's reagent) are discussed. [on SciFinder (R)]

A new industrial process for the electrolytic regeneration Mn2(SO4)3 is presented in which: a slurry of MnSO4/Mn2(SO4)3 in 55% H2SO4 was used as a carrier, the electrolyte is purified with an optimum mode before electrogeneration, and a new industrial electrochem. reactor is developed for an economical electrogeneration of Mn2(SO4)3. [on SciFinder (R)]

The electro-combustion of water sol. polymeric contaminants such as polyacrylates (PA) in aq. acid soln. using a B-doped diamond anode was studied by bulk electrolysis in 1 mol/dm3 HClO4 under galvanostatic conditions in a wide range of PA concns. and current densities. In all cases complete electro-combustion of PA was achieved and this is the 1st successful report for the electro-combustion of sol. org. polymers. The exptl. COD and instantaneous current efficiency values are well predicted from a theor. m

The increasing quality and durability of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) state-of-the-art materials renders the long-term testing of fuel cells difficult since considerably long equipment times are needed to obtain valuable results. Moreover, reproducibility issues are common due to the high sensitivity of the performance and degradation on the testing conditions. An original segmented cell configuration has been adopted in order to carry out four tests in parallel, thus decreasing the total experimental time
