The size of window openings is widely acknowledged as an important factor in our spatial perception. However, little is known about how the perception and preference of windows changes between countries, leaving a gap of knowledge regarding the applicabili ...

This document is the 2013 (and first) edition of the yearly activity report of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID). It introduces the team and their research and teaching activities, as well as their main publications and international collaborations.

The objectives of this study are to evaluate (1) direct non-visual effects of red-impoverished daylight on circadian resetting and alertness and (2) the daily light-exposure pattern on indirect–circadian–effects. The novelty of this study is that it will b ...

A conference on advanced building skins was held in Bressanone, Italy on November 5-6, 2013. The main objective of this conference is to contribute to a multidisciplinary, integrated planning approach to sustainable buildings and to create a dialogue among architects, engineers, scientists, energy managers and manufacturers with the aim of reducing energy consumption while improving the comfort and health of building occupants.

Daylight, in which we evolved, is naturally rich in the blue component of the spectrum and has key properties when it comes to impacts on body functioning. Current lifestyles are driving the emergence of a 24-hour society that spends most of the time indoo ...

Contributing artists/scientists to Daylightful Trilogy at Sun shines on Architecture, Archizoom, EPFL , Marilyne Andersen "Your Light Hygiene", Yunni Cho "Transient Stillness", Stephen Wasilewski "A Particular View" (as LIPID team), Lausanne, Switzerland (21 March to 21 June 2025) – part of Soleil· s (Solar Biennale 2) at mudac.

Discomfort glare is a major challenge for the design of workplaces. The existing metrics for discomfort glare prediction share the limitation that they do not take gaze direction into account. In order to overcome this limitation, we developed a ‘gaze-driv ...

Co-curator of Lighten Up! On Biology and Time exhibition International art exhibition at EPFL Pavilions, Lausanne (23 March to 30 July 2023) 19 artworks exhibited (including by Olafur Eliasson, James Carpenter, Liliane Lijn), 7’000 visitors (80% from outside EPFL) other curators: Prof. em. Anna Wirz-Justice (University of Basel), Prof. Sarah Kenderdine and Dr. Giulia Bini (EPFL)

Voluntary green-rating systems exist in different forms worldwide to certify the sustainability of residential and commercial buildings and help national policies promote energy-efficient design practices. Despite the general assumption that sustainable bu ...

As the interest in design applications related to responses to light beyond vision is growing, two simulation tools, ALFA and Lark, have been developed to incorporate spectral characteristics of light in the evaluation of indoor lighting conditions. The sp ...

Daylighting brings together questions relevant to architectural design and building engineering, but also to human physiology and behaviour. This magazine article presents a shortened version of a more comprehensive scientific paper published in the Fifty Year Anniversary Golden Issue for Building and Environment.

On May 15-16, 2013 the 5th International Daylight Symposium, themed « New Eyes on Existing Buildings » and organized by Velux, took place at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was preceded by the 2nd Academic Forum for PhD students working on daylighting issues on May 14. Prof. Marilyne Andersen, head of the LIPID laboratory at EPFL, was invited as moderator for the whole symposium and as leading scientific researcher for the Academic Forum.

The purpose of this report is to detail the findings of a long-term evaluation study on the impact of installing electrochromic glazing in two different buildings owned by Audemars Piguet. The two locations under investigation are the APRP ateliers in Le L ...

The establishment of climate-based daylight modeling within research and practice has led to a fundamental reassessment of both the basis and purpose of daylight metrics. Whilst there is no consensus yet on the precise nature of the metric(s) that should r ...

The education of building practitioners is challenged by the increasing need for interdisciplinary profiles in the professional practice. To progress toward the goal of a sustainable built environment, a common language must be shared among fields such as ...

Recently, there have been multiple proposals for faster methods to calculate glare metrics, daylight glare proba- bility (DGP) in particular. This is driven simultaneously by the lengthy times required to simulate DGP with a con- ventional image-based appr ...

This paper presents an attempt to create synthetic weather data for stochastic building simulation. The synthetic data are created entirely from the freely available Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) weather files using time series models and resampling. T ...

Contributing artist/scientist to Droit au Jour experience (“the right to the day”) combining an interactive installation and an experimentation space at the Solar Biennale, mudac (Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts), Lausanne, Switzerland (21 March to 21 September 2025)

Environmental performance objectives in terms of energy consumption and carbon emission targets can be found in various building norms and certifications schemes. These targets are often dependent upon the building program (e.g. office), but independent fr ...
