This study introduces a novel procedure combining image analysis techniques to examine the temporal changes in natural light, a key aspect in daylighting and built environment research. Our approach utilizes both Low Dynamic Range (LDR) and High Dynamic Ra ...

There are uncertainties in the current daylight glare prediction models as they do not accurately predict the glare sensation that people experience. The objective of this research project is to investigate daylight glare stemming from contrast between task area and its immediate surroundings. In order to control for bias, several of the main factors that are suspected of influencing individuals’ glare ratings will also be investigated, among others self-reported glare sensitivity, gaze direction and eye co

This paper describes a new methodology to assess the robustness of building performance in the long term with a probabilistic approach. The aim is to include uncertainties related to climate change predictions as well as the intrinsic uncertainties in weat ...

Previous studies have shown that access to a satisfactory view to the outside with sufficient daylight is essential for building occupants' health and well-being. It has also been suggested that certain features of visual content improve view-out quality, ...

When studying discomfort glare, researchers tend to rely on a single questionnaire item to obtain user evaluations. It is unclear whether the choice of questionnaire item affects the distribution of user responses and leads to inconsistencies between studi ...

Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) decisions and judgments have been at the heart of architectural design practice. Despite the increasing popularity of computer aided design applications, measuring the decision making of designers empirically rema ...

We lack consensus on a unified definition for window view quality that is applicable across occupancies and building types. In addition, while this is a topic of growing interest, there is limited research underway due to its complex nature, insufficient f ...

We propose a new method for climate-based daylight modeling (CBDM) based on simulating and evaluating only the most important features. By adaptively sampling the temporal lightfield that describes daylight in buildings, our method escapes the curse of dim ...

This paper will present an annual simulation-based workflow for assessing human perceptual and non-visual responses to daylight across a series of view positions in an architectural case study. Through the integration of mathematical models used to predict ...

When it comes to value how magnificent buildings are experienced, most designers believe that sunlight is essential. Although architecture is a technical discipline, it lacks a consensus about what quantity and what quality of light are required to make a space efficient.

The daylight design of building spaces for non-visual effects could have major implications for healthcare and residential buildings where occupants can remain in fixed positions for extended periods. This poster describes the formulation and application of a simulation model to predict the cumulative magnitude of non-visual effects due to daylight in buildings.

This paper presents the results of an original design process-oriented user study conducted on an interactive expert system specifically developed for full year, climate-based daylighting design support. The aim of the study was to determine how well its d ...

In this study, we examined the influence of daylight transmitted through colored glazing on discomfort glare by exposing 56 participants to four daylight conditions with the sun disc visible in their field of view. The conditions varied only in the glazing color (red, blue, green, and neutral) toward the sun while having similar transmittance and glare metric values. Results showed a strong influence of color on glare perception, with more participants reporting glare under red and blue conditions compared

Façade design is claimed to fulfil a number of requirements in workplaces, ranging from privacy to safety and from comfort to aesthetics. For future R&D efforts in façade design, identifying the key drivers that should shape contemporary facades in office ...

Main artist of Circa Diem installation (Ø 400 cm x (h) 575 cm) exhibited at Lighten Up! On Biology and Time, EPFL Pavilions, Switzerland (23 March to 30 July 2023) exhibited digitally at Positions: Transcalar Prospects in Climate Crisis, Archizoom, EPFL (30 May to 28 July 2023) exhibited in hybrid form at the Seoul Biennale for Architecture and Urbanism SBAU 2021, Seoul, South Korea (16 September to 31 October 2021) General Director: Dominique Perrault, collaboration with HEAD-Genève Prof. Javier Fernandez

This presentation introduced a novel method for creating immersive scenes for Virtual Reality based on physically-based renderings and discussed the potential and limitation of this method.

The evaluation of indoor comfort requires a thorough understanding of how human occupants perceive four indoor environmental factors: visual conditions, air quality, acoustic ambience and thermal conditions. Recent studies have found that overall comfort i ...

Invited round table panelist on the occasion of the programmes' 15th anniversary, organized by the Réseau romand de mentoring pour femmes and Mentoring Deutschschweiz

When conducting building performance simulation (BPS) at the early design stage, potential impact on design decisions is the greatest. However, the reliability of evaluations resulting from early design stage BPS models may suffer given that building attri ...
