For field research of non-visual effects of light, accurate measurement of personal light exposure is required. A consensus framework for light-dosimetry could improve non-visual field research and ensure comparability between studies. Here we present a review of methodologies used in non-visual light-dosimetry studies published to date, focussing on considerations regarding the measurement and preparation of personal light exposure data. Overall, a large variability in the studies methodologies is observed

Existing methods for glare-free daylighting design rely on analyses of physically based lighting simulations employing tools such as Radiance. The rendered image is an accumulation of luminance values from a fixed point of view, which creates a basis for l ...

The characterization of biophilic environments, recognized for their potential to enhance well-being, requires researchers to have access to relevant metrics and methodologies when it comes to assessing this potential. Given the large diversity of well-bei ...

Daylight has long been recognized for its positive effects on human health and well-being, yet empirical evidence is still missing regarding the specific optical properties driving these benefits. In our effort to bring a more fundamental understanding of the mechanisms governing our non-visual response to daylight, the present paper describes a workflow and its application to an experimental setting to ensure “a priori equivalence” (i.e. comparability) of light exposure between daylit and electrically lit

Adaptive kinetic façades are systems capable of modifying their shape to optimize their behavior regarding real time outdoor and indoor conditions. They are typically evaluated based on quantifiable physical parameters such as illuminance levels, with litt ...

Natural light greatly impacts how a building is experienced by its occupants. It affects their well-being, notably from their health and biological clock perspectives, but also their perceived visual and thermal comfort, or their emotional response. If we want to support the design of places of delightful – and daylightful – living, we must bring these multifaceted considerations to become integral drivers of the creative process. This lecture will explore current research efforts aiming towards a deeper i

A variety of building labels and norms exist that set evermore-ambitious environmental and energy performance targets. In parallel, a growing number of building performance evaluation tools are adopting the life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to allow ...

Discomfort glare, among different aspects of visual discomfort is a phenomenon which is little understood and hard to quantify. As this phenomenon is dependent on the building occupant’s view direction and on the relative position of the glare source, a deeper knowledge of one’s visual behavior within a space could provide pertinent insights into better understanding glare. To address this need, we set up an experiment to investigate dependencies of view direction distribution to a selected range of brightn

This paper describes a climate-based simulation framework devised to investigate the potential for the non-visual effects of daylight in buildings. It is part 2 of a study where the first paper focused on the formulation of the photobiological underpinning ...

Physical models are commonly used to assess daylighting performance of buildings using sky simulators for purpose of research as well as practice. Recent studies have pointed out the general tendency of scale model assessments to overestimate the performan ...

One of the effects of globalization and work mobility is the increasing multiculturalism in the workplace. While contemporary design policies for energy efficiency and comfort regulations are moving towards the adoption of models customized for local commu ...

This talk will provide current research perspectives on shading systems, on how their performance can be evaluated and on what the implications are on comfort and health. In particular, the latest results from an ongoing research project conducted at the LIPID to create a ranking system that applies to any façade system that is considered to be a complex fenestration system will be presented. This evaluation process currently relies on three metrics, each being associated to one aspect of the potential bene

We describe a concept for a novel stationary solar concentrator that relies on a new self-adaptive optical valve, non-imaging optics and the integrating sphere principle. Our analytical model reveals that this unique combination theoretically allows reachi ...

Luminance ratios have historically been used to assess glare. Using data from a previous experiment, this exploratory study investigates the relationship between luminance variations in the field of view (FOV), measured as luminance ratios, and glare sensa ...

Over the last century, a large number of studies has tried to answer to the question whether coloured stimuli could have an effect on human thermal perceptual evaluation (i.e., temperature-colour interaction). In the building research area, this effect is referred to as the “hue-heat-hypothesis” (HHH) and has gained attention due to the fascinating idea of heating and cooling with colours. After a brief digression on previous studies on HHH, this presentation focuses on two experimental studies carried out

The axis "Integrated Design Architecture and Sustainability" (IDEAS) is a joint initiative of both the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID) and Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) of the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) at EPFL. It aims to address an increased integration of the various issues related to sustainable architecture within the framework of the Doctoral program Architecture & Science of the city (EDAR)

The first evidence for a novel type of photoreceptor in humans was published in the form of an action spectrum for melatonin suppression. This action spectrum has very different spectral sensitivities compared to rod and cone photoreceptors. This discovery led scientists to rethink how lighting needs for human health are evaluated. Existing literature provides useful information about how to evaluate and report non-visual spectral sensitivities to light but lacks a unified description. In this paper, key co

Daylighting as a research topic situates itself at the interface between psycho-physiological and environmental factors, bringing together questions relevant to architectural design and building engineering, but also to human physiology and behavior. While ...

A growing area of research focuses on the relationship between ocular light exposure and the non-visual responses. In order to accelerate research on this topic and improve building design, reliable spectral simulation tools are needed. This study aims at ...

The metrics described in this document are intended to be applicable to common workplace environments. They are based on an analysis of open offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, multi-purpose rooms, and service areas in libraries and lobbies, and so are mos ...
