This paper proposes randomly-generated synthetic time series incorporating climate change forecasts to quantify the variation in energy simulation due to weather inputs, i.e., Monte Carlo analysis for uncertainty and sensitivity quantification. The method ...

Developing building projects with low environmental impacts is a real challenge, yet a problem faced every day by designers. To that end, in the design process, iteration between propositions and objectives have been used that are complex and time consumption. The impact targets leading to low-carbon buildings have the potential to simplify this complexity and saving time in the building design process. This study introduces a methodology for the definition of impact targets for components and systems of bu

The increasing popularity of parametric design tools goes hand in hand with the use of building performance simulation (BPS) tools from the early design phase. However, current methods require a significant computational time and a high number of parameter ...

This contribution introduces an experimental study aiming to provide concrete evidence on how façade and daylight pattern geometry can affect the emotional responses triggered by a space. The study was conducted in Virtual Reality (VR) where participants w ...

This talk provides an overview of the current research projects at LIPID and the necessity for performance-integrated design in today’s urge for energy-efficient, human-responsive living spaces. Within the overall framework of promoting linkages between the engineering and design fields, new approaches in research and education that are being developed to better integrate building performance considerations in the architectural design process are discussed, with a strategic focus on daylighting. LIPID’s res

Within the scope of a broader research project about daylight and temperature interaction effects on human responses, this paper investigates how daylight transmitted through spectrally selective glazing (blue, orange and a reference neutral) affects therm ...

In the contemporary context of building for sustainability, architects are faced with a major challenge of reconciling a vast range of human requirements within a successful design that has to answer ecological constraints. Within the overall framework of promoting linkages between the engineering and design fields, this talk will discuss new approaches in research and education that are being developed to better integrate building performance considerations in the architectural design process. Daylighting

In spaces where daylight is a primary source of illumination, our visual perception of architecture is largely influenced by the ephemeral composition of sunlight and shadow. To evaluate these perceptual effects, the authors will apply quantitative contras ...

Due to the growing popularity of virtual reality (VR) as a tool for conducting subjective experiments, we propose a session addressing methodological concerns and good practices for the use of VR in lighting research, going further than a simple demonstrat ...

Light-dosimetry aims to measure personal light exposure in real-life settings, allowing to investigate the role of light in visual, physiological, and behavioural processes. One aspect not yet considered in light-dosimetry is the spatial distribution of li ...

This paper presents the outcome of a study based on the early-stage analysis of six virtual urban-scale designs located in Bern, Switzerland. A preliminary solar potential evaluation methodology is devised, inspired by previous studies, to allow the compar ...

The ultimate impact buildings have on our lives is fundamental: buildings represent a major part of our life, with a share of over 40% of overall energy use, waste and CO2 emissions, almost 50% of the population now living in cities, and 90% of time typically spent indoors. With lighting being responsible for the greatest energy requirements in commercial buildings - that are also mostly used during daytime -, and with heating and cooling being the two second most energy-demanding building functions, it app

Although knowledge about the impact of light on individuals beyond vision is becoming substantial and less and less controversial, there is still a gap on how to properly address what type of lighting quality one should seek in an indoor space. What consti ...

Natural light greatly impacts how a building is experienced by its occupants. It affects their well-being, notably from their health and biological clock perspectives, but also their perceived visual and thermal comfort, or their emotional response. If we want to support the design of places of delightful – and daylightful – living, we must bring these multifaceted considerations to become integral drivers of the creative process. This lecture will explore current research efforts aiming towards a deeper i

The UE M course aims to improve the students’ ability to see, to plan and to design light in architecture. The purpose is to consider light as a resource, a raw material, and to understand how it can be used to emphasize architectural concepts. The students were asked to adopt a sustainable approach focusing on comfort and energy concerns. The following topics were adressed : daylighting optimization, artificial lighting, design and testing of specific day- and electric lighting systems.

Discomfort glare from daylight can lower productivity and hinder effective use of daylight in buildings. Existing glare prediction models have limitations in accounting for the large inter-individual differences, mainly due to unknown physiological factors underlying discomfort glare. Our study aims to determine whether macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in the human retina influences individual glare sensitivity in indoor daylit environments. We conducted user studies involving 149 participants in offi

As psychiatric care evolves, greater attention is being directed to the design of treatment environments that actively support patient recovery and well-being. Extensive research on therapeutic landscapes highlights the benefits of nature, daylight, and biophilic design, yet many modern psychiatric facilities still struggle to integrate these features into centralized, efficiency-driven layouts. This paper investigates the historical progression of psychiatric facility design in Vienna and explores how arch

Product of a research cooperation between three Swiss universities - the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne's School of Architecture, the School of Architecture and Technology in Fribourg, and the University of Fribourg - the Smart Living Lab is a research and development center for the built environment of the future. This high-tech structure also serves as an emblem of the cooperation's aim to translate academic research into actual buildings. A new series of books, entitled Towards 2050 will be sho

In the early phases of the building design process, decisions are made on certain geometrical parameters, which strongly dictate the future performance of the building. To support decision- making, an understanding of the relation between design parameters ...

Designing spaces that are able to balance illumination, glare and solar gains over a whole year is a real challenge, yet a problem faced every day by building envelope designers. To assist them in this search, a full year, climate-based daylighting simulation method was developed, called Lightsolve, meant to be used early on in the design process when façade and space details have not yet been defined. It focuses on the variation of daylight performance over the day and the year, combining temporal performa
