We optimize a silica-encapsulated silicon L3 photonic crystal cavity for ultra-high quality factor by means of a global optimization strategy, where the closest holes surrounding the cavity are varied to minimize out-of-plane losses. We find an optimal val ...

We investigate the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition in a disordered one-dimensional Bose gas in the mean-field limit by studying the probability distribution of the density. The superfluid phase is characterized by a vanishing probability to h ...

We develop a kinetic model for polariton condensation, in which the field dynamics of collective excitations is treated self-consistently during the condensation kinetics. This model allows to account properly for the quantum fluctuations of the condensate. Using realistic parameters, we prove that long-wavelength excitations considerably deplete the condensate just above threshold. (c) 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

We investigate the challenge of classical simulation of unitary quantum dynamics with variational Monte Carlo approaches, addressing the instabilities and high computational demands of existing methods. By systematically analyzing the convergence of stocha ...

We adopt a kinetic theory of polariton nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation to describe the formation of off-diagonal long-range order. The theory accounts properly for the dominant role of quantum fluctuations in the condensate. In realistic situatio ...

We study the two-dimensional weakly repulsive Bose gas at zero temperature in the presence of correlated disorder. Using large-scale simulations, we show that the low-energy Bogoliubov cumulative density of states remains quadratic up to a critical disorde ...

The possibility to simulate the properties of many-body open quantum systems with a large number of degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) is the premise to the solution of several outstanding problems in quantum science and quantum information. The challenge posed b ...

In a coupled quantum-dot–nanocavity system, the photoluminescence from an off-resonance cavity mode exhibits strong quantum correlations with the quantum-dot transitions, even though its autocorrelation function is classical. Using new pump-power dependent ...

In open quantum systems, dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) emerge from the interplay between unitary evolution, drive, and dissipation. While second-order DPTs have been predominantly investigated theoretically, first-order DPTs have been observed in si ...

We review the rapid progress during the last years in the study of secondary emission in quantum wells. On the experimental side, this progress was characterized by ever increasing temporal, spectral, and spatial resolution. On the theoretical side, the most appropriate description of the resonant low-excitation regime is the paradigm of disorder-localized exciton center-of-mass wavefunctions as developed by Roland Zimmermann and collaborators. In our contribution to this Festschrift, we focus on the recent

Polariton condensates have proved to be model systems to investigate topological defects, as they allow for direct and nondestructive imaging of the condensate complex order parameter. The fundamental topological excitations of such systems are quantized v ...
