The axis "Integrated Design Architecture and Sustainability" (IDEAS) is a joint initiative of both the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID) and Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST) of the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) at EPFL. It aims to address an increased integration of the various issues related to sustainable architecture within the framework of the Doctoral program Architecture & Science of the city (EDAR)

Within the context of post-industrial European cities, the regeneration of urban brownfields contributes to limit urban sprawl by increasing cities density while revitalizing neighborhoods. Yet because of their complex nature, urban brownfields regeneratio ...

As tomorrow’s cities are already largely built, many strategies stress the importance of urban renewalprocesses to address current energy issues. This paper focuses on the Spanish residential building stockbuilt until 2001, which has a low level of energy ...

Building renovation is one of the main strategies put forth in western countries, where energy regulations are becoming increasingly demanding. Switzerland for example has set the ambitious target aiming at carbon neutrality for 2050. Building-integrated p ...

The Swisswoodhouse concept is the outcome of a number of studies on issues related to urban densification, structural changes in households, housing adaptability and the environmental challenges of sustainable construction. The building design is more specifically based on the aggregation of prefabricated 22 m2 wooden modules that can be adapted to provide a wide variety of types and functions. At the technical level, priority has been given to energy issues in order to satisfy the requirements of the visio

The objective of this research is to compare the energy consumption of seven recently built residential neighborhoods in the urban region of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in order to identify the influence of centrality on total energy spending. Primary energy i ...

Building Integrated Photovoltaics’ (BIPV) performance is improving rapidly. However, their potential is diminished because of several barriers. Due to its limited expressive quality, architects tend to avoid integrating BIPV in building design, more particularly, in façades. In order to bridge the gap between technology and design, this research aims at developing design strategies to integrate BIPV’s expressive issues into today’s façade construction, focusing on new collective residential dwellings. In th

As tomorrow’s cities are already largely built, and as many of their buildings have a low energy performance level, urban renewal processes are essential for the sustainable development of European cities. In this context, Building-Integrated Photovoltaic ...

In light of the Paris Agreement’s objectives and the related European and Swiss goals of decarbonising the built environment, the importance, relevance, and potential benefits of integrating Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) within building renovatio ...

European energy directives define highly‐demanding performance standards, from zero‐energy buildings to positive‐energy buildings. In Switzerland, one of the specific objectives of the new “Energy strategy 2050” is to install PV systems on existing buildin ...

The international greenhouse gas agreements call for mitigations in the building industry. Thus, the number of scientific publications about life-cycle performance assessment (LCPA) follows an exponential trend since the 2000s. However, previous surveys hi ...

In a global context marked by the urgency of climate change, tangible actions towards the ecological transition are top priorities for the built environment. This paper presents the results of the “Maillages fertiles” research project, which seizes the opp ...

The assessment of the solar potential in urban areas relies on a geometrical model that can be defined at different levels of detail (LOD). In this work we compare the solar irradiation simulated on the surfaces of four sample buildings, which were modeled ...
