Knee cartilage has limited natural healing capacity, complicating the development of effective treatment plans. Current non-cell-based therapies (e.g., microfracture) result in poor repair cartilage mechanical properties, low durability, and suboptimal tis ...

Despite total hip replacement (THR) gives generally satisfactory results, the quality of outcome in young patients is markedly decreased compared to the average THR outcome. For this population, pharmacological treatment with bisphosphonate would be benefi ...

A combined experimental/numerical study was performed to calculate the 3D octahedral shear strain map in a mouse tibia loaded axially. This study is motivated by the fact that the bone remodelling analysis, in this in vivo mouse model should be performed a ...

A good primary stability of cementless femoral stems is essential for the long-term success of total hip arthroplasty. Experimental measurement of implant micromotion with linear variable differential transformers is commonly used to assess implant primary ...

In order to decrease the peri-implant bone loss during the life-time of the implant, oral use of anti-osteoporosis drugs (like bisphosphonates) has been suggested. In this study, bone remodeling parameters identified from clinical trials of alendronate were used to simulate the effect of those drugs used after total hip arthroplasty on the peri-implant bone density. Results of the simulation show that the oral administrated drugs increase bone density around the implant and decreases, at the same time, the

Mouthguards are primarily designed to attenuate the oral impacts and decrease the risk of dental damage. For this reason, they are recommended or obligatory in certain sports. However, only well-designed customized mouthguards could provide efficient protection and comfort. The high cost and long lead time for fabricating customized mouthguards with specific structural and material properties restrict their usage. Emerging digitalbased additive manufacturing technologies could overcome these difficulties. A

The swelling and compressive mechanical behavior as well as the morphology and biocompatibility of composite hydrogels based on Tween® 20 trimethacrylate (T3), N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) were assessed in the present study. The chemical structure of T3 was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and the degree of substitution was found to be around 3. Swelling ratios of neat hydrogels composed of different concentrations

Dissipative materials are essential for mitigating impact in various automotive, aerospace, and sports equipment applications. This study investigates the efficiency of a novel hybrid iono-organogel in dissipating and absorbing impact energies. The gel con ...

The aim of this study was to culture human fetal bone cells (dedicated cell banks of fetal bone derived from 14 week gestation femurs) within both hyaluronic acid gel and collagen foam, to compare the biocompatibility of both matrices as potential delivery ...

Many experimental models have been developed to investigate the effects of mechanical stimulation of cells, but none of the existing devices can simulate micromotions at the cellular-mechanical interface with varying amplitudes and loads. Osteoblasts are sensitive to mechanical stimuli, so to study the bone-implant interface it would be important to quantify their reaction in a situation mimicking the mechanical situation arising at that interface. In this study, we present the development of a new device a

Different cell sources for bone tissue engineering are reviewed. In particular, adult cell source strategies have been based on the implantation of unfractionated fresh bone marrow; purified, culture expanded mesenchymal stem cells, differentiated osteobla ...

Traction tests on soft tissues show that the shape of the stress strain curves depends on the strain rate at which the tests are performed. Many of the constitutive models that have been proposed fail to properly consider the effect of the strain rate when large deformations are encountered. In the present study, a framework based on elastic and viscous potentials is developed. The resulting constitutive law is valid for large deformations and satisfies the principles of thermodynamics. Three parameters --

Tracheomalacia (TM) is a condition characterized by a weak tracheal cartilage and/or muscle, resulting in excessive collapse of the airway in the newborns. Current treatments including tracheal reconstruction, tracheoplasty, endo- and extra-luminal stents ...

Mechanical stimulus has been identified for a long time as a key player in the adaptation of the musculo-skeletal tissues to their function. Mechanical loading is then an intrinsic variable to be considered when new developments are proposed in bone tissue ...

The invention relates to a cross-linkable polymer comprising a base polymer comprising functional groups at least some of which have been reacted with a first organic molecule comprising a cross-linkable unit and with a second organic molecule capable of b ...

Knee cartilage is a soft tissue having viscoelastic properties. Under cyclic loadings, viscoelastic materials dissipate mechanical loadings through heat generation. In knee cartilage, this heat might not be convected because of the tissue avascularity, res ...

Tissue wounds are a significant challenge for the healthcare system, affecting millions globally. Current methods like suturing and stapling have limitations as they inadequately cover the wound, fail to prevent fluid leakage, and increase the risk of infe ...

Partial-thickness tears of the supraspinatus tendon frequently occur at its insertion on the greater tubercule of the humerus, causing pain and reduced strength and range of motion. The goal of this work was to quantify the loss of loading capacity due to tendon tears at the insertion area. A finite element model of the supraspinatus tendon was developed using in vivo magnetic resonance images data. The tendon was represented by an anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive law identified with experimental measu

Inappropriate patellar cut during total knee arthroplasty can lead to patellar complications due to increased bone strain. In this study, we evaluated patellar bone strain of a patient who had a deeper patellar cut than the recommended. A patient-specific model based on patient preoperative data was created. The model was decoupled into two levels: knee and patella. The knee model predicted kinematics and forces on the patella during squat movement. The patella model used these values to predict bone strain
