Our research focuses on building secure and privacy-preserving systems. We aim to develop tools and methodologies to help engineers embedding strong security and privacy guarantees in their designs, as well as techniques that help them to systematically quantifying the information that an adversary can infer from data she may have access to.More information about our activities here: https://spring.epfl.ch/
Teaching & PhD PhD Students Saiid El Hajj Chehade, Eric Jollès, Christian Knabenhans, Boy Stewart ColeProfessor Stewart Cole is an international authority in bacterial molecular-genetics and genomics. He has made outstanding contributions in several fields including: bacterial anaerobic electron transport; genome analysis of retroviruses and papillomaviruses; antibiotic resistance mechanisms; and the molecular microbiology of toxigenic clostridia. His studies on isoniazid and multidrug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, together with his pioneering work on the pathogenicity, evolution and genomics of the tubercle and leprosy bacilli, have made him an undisputed leader in the field of mycobacterial research. The findings of his research are of direct relevance to public health and disease-control in both the developing world and the industrialised nations. He has published over 250 scientific papers and review articles, and holds many patents.
Federico AmatoI have an MSc in Engineering and a Ph.D. in Sustainable Development and Innovation Engineering. After a three-year Postdoc in Environmental Data Mining, in 2021 I joined the Swiss Data Science Centre, a joint venture between the polytechnical schools of Lausanne (EPFL) and Zurich (ETH) having as mission the acceleration of the digital transformation of the academic community and the industrial sector, putting to work Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and facilitating the multidisciplinary exchange of data and knowledge.
Over the years I worked on the development of methodological tools to mine and model big spatiotemporal datasets. I extensively applied such methods to study the interaction between the spatial and temporal components of environmental and geographical phenomena, and their consequences in terms of spatial planning and urban geography. My academic activity has focused on the analysis of land-use dynamics and their relationship with climate, pollution, natural hazards, and other social/economic phenomena. I have deep competencies in applied statistics, machine learning, geocomputation, spatial statistics, urban modeling, and remote sensing. I am also an expert in European Project development and implementation.
Anna Carratala RipollesDuring my PhD, I mainly focused on characterizing the effect of environmental factors (namely temperature and sunlight) and disinfectants on the stability of human viral pathogens as contaminants of aquatic environments. In addition,I developed a novel source tracking tool to identify avian fecal contamination in environmental samples. Thanks to a research fellowship given by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology, I also had the opportunity to explore the diversity of marine viruses in Mediterranean coastal waters by genetic fingerprinting and by next generation sequencing. Later on, I became interested in the long-term effect of environmental stressors on virus communities, so I joined the LCE as a postdoc to investigate the adaptation of enteroviruses to ultraviolet radiation. For 4 years, I worked on developing UV-resistant viruses and characterizing their acquired phenotypic and genetic properties by combining directed evolution experiments, deep sequencing and population genetics. Out of the lab, I am passionate about nature, traveling and scuba diving.
