Analysis-aware defeaturing of complex geometries with Neumann features

Local modifications of a computational domain are often performed in order to simplify the meshing process and to reduce computational costs and memory requirements. However, removing geometrical features of a domain often introduces a non-negligible error ...

Stabilized isogeometric discretizations on trimmed and union geometries, and weak imposition of the boundary conditions for the Darcy flow

Riccardo Puppi

Modern manufacturing engineering is based on a ``design-through-analysis'' workflow. According to this paradigm, a prototype is first designed with Computer-aided-design (CAD) software and then finalized by simulating its physical behavior, which usually i ...

Adaptive analysis-aware defeaturing

Ondine Gabrielle Chanon

Removing geometrical details from a complex domain is a classical operation in computer aided design for simulation and manufacturing. This procedure simplifies the meshing process, and it enables faster simulations with less memory requirements. However, ...

Conservation of Forces and Total Work at the Interface Using the Internodes Method

Simone Deparis

The Internodes method is a general purpose method to deal with non-conforming discretizations of partial differential equations on 2D and 3D regions partitioned into disjoint subdomains. In this paper we are interested in measuring how much the Internodes ...

Overlapping Multipatch Isogeometric Method With Minimal Stabilization

Annalisa Buffa, Pablo Antolin Sanchez, Xiaodong Wei, Riccardo Puppi

We present a novel method for isogeometric analysis (IGA) to directly work on geometries constructed by Boolean operations including difference (i.e., trimming), union, and intersection. Particularly, this work focuses on the union operation, which involve ...

Immersed boundary-conformal isogeometric method for linear elliptic problems

Annalisa Buffa, Pablo Antolin Sanchez, Xiaodong Wei

We present a novel isogeometric method, namely the Immersed Boundary-Conformal Method (IBCM), that features a layer of discretization conformal to the boundary while employing a simple background mesh for the remaining domain. In this manner, we leverage t ...

Adaptive isogeometric analysis on two-dimensional trimmed domains based on a hierarchical approach

Annalisa Buffa, Pablo Antolin Sanchez, Rafael Vazquez Hernandez, Luca Coradello

The focus of this work is on the development of an error-driven isogeometric framework, capable of automatically performing an adaptive simulation in the context of second- and fourth-order, elliptic partial differential equations defined on two-dimensiona ...

Volumetric untrimming: Precise decomposition of trimmed trivariates into tensor products

Pablo Antolin Sanchez

3D objects, modeled using Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) tools, are traditionally represented using a boundary representation (B-rep), and typically use spline functions to parameterize these boundary surfaces. However, recent development in physic ...

How to Tell Ancient Signs Apart? Recognizing and Visualizing Maya Glyphs with CNNs

Daniel Gatica-Perez, Jean-Marc Odobez, Gülcan Can

Thanks to the digital preservation of cultural heritage materials, multimedia tools (e.g., based on automatic visual processing) considerably ease the work of scholars in the humanities and help them to perform quantitative analysis of their data. In this ...

WatchNet: Efficient and Depth-based Network for People Detection in Video Surveillance Systems

Jean-Marc Odobez, Olivier Canévet, Michael Villamizar

We propose a deep-learning approach for people detection on depth imagery. The approach is designed to be deployed as an autonomous appliance for identifying people attacks and intrusion in video surveillance scenarios. To this end, we propose a fully-conv ...

An isogeometric boundary element method for electromagnetic scattering with compatible B-spline discretizations

Rafael Vazquez Hernandez

We outline the construction of compatible B-splines on 3D surfaces that satisfy the continuity requirements for electromagnetic scattering analysis with the boundary element method (method of moments). Our approach makes use of Non-Uniform Rational B-splin ...

Optimization based methods for highly heterogeneous multiscale problems and multiscale methods for elastic waves

Orane Pouchon

Multiscale or multiphysics partial differential equations are used to model a wide range of physical systems with various applications, e.g. from material and natural science to problems in biology or engineering. When the ratio between the smallest scale ...

LIFT: Learned Invariant Feature Transform

Pascal Fua, Vincent Lepetit, Kwang Moo Yi, Eduard Trulls Fortuny

We introduce a novel Deep Network architecture that implements the full feature point handling pipeline, that is, detection, orientation estimation, and feature description. While previous works have successfully tackled each one of these problems individu ...

Inexact accurate partitioned algorithms for fluid-structure interaction problems with finite elasticity in haemodynamics

Fabio Nobile, Christian Vergara

In this paper we consider the numerical solution of the three-dimensional fluid–structure interaction problem in haemodynamics, in the case of real geometries, physiological data and finite elasticity vessel deformations. We study some new inexact schemes, ...

Particle Manifold Method (PMM) for Multiscale Continuous-Discontinuous Analysis

Liang Sun

It is important to consider the microstructure of a material when studying the macroscopic mechanical properties. Although special equipments have been used for micromechanics study through experimental tests, it is limited by instruments and reproducibili ...

Adaptive Finite Element Methods for Multiscale Partial Differential Equations

Achim Nonnenmacher

Engineers rely on efficient simulations that provide them with reliable data in order to make proper engineering design decisions. The purpose of this thesis is to design adaptive numerical methods for multiscale problems in this spirit. We consider ellipt ...

Finite element methods with patches and applications

Joël Wagner

Theoretical and numerical aspects of multi-scale problems are investigated. On one hand, mathematical analysis is done on a new method for numerically solving problems with multi-scale behavior using multiple levels of not necessarily nested grids. A parti ...

Analytical modeling of the apparent d(33) piezoelectric coefficient determined by the direct quasistatic method for different boundary conditions

Nava Setter, Dragan Damjanovic, Abdolghaffar Barzegar

The longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient d(33) measured by the quasistatic (Berlincourt-type) method is strongly dependent on the sample aspect ratio (thickness/lateral dimension) and the type of contacts used to collect the charge and apply the pressure ...
