On Speed and Advantage : Results in Information Velocity and Monitoring Problems

Information theory has allowed us to determine the fundamental limit of various communication and algorithmic problems, e.g., the channel coding problem, the compression problem, and the hypothesis testing problem. In this work, we revisit the assumptions ...

Low Power LDPC Decoding by Reliable Voltage Down-Scaling

Andreas Peter Burg

Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) decoder is among the power hungry building blocks of wireless communication systems. Voltage scaling down to Near-Threshold (NT) voltages substantially improves energy efficiency, in theory up 10x. However, tuning the voltag ...

Symmetry in design and decoding of polar-like codes

Kirill Ivanov

The beginning of 21st century provided us with many answers about how to reach the channel capacity. Polarization and spatial coupling are two techniques for achieving the capacity of binary memoryless symmetric channels under low-complexity decoding algor ...

Optima Age Over Erasure Channels

Emre Telatar, Rajai Nasser, Elie Najm

Previous works on age of information and erasure channels have dealt with specific models and computed the average age or average peak age for certain settings. In this paper, given a source that produces a letter every T-s seconds and an erasure channel t ...

On the Efficiency of Polar-Like Decoding for Symmetric Codes

Rüdiger Urbanke, Kirill Ivanov

The recently introduced polar codes constitute a breakthrough in coding theory due to their capacity-achieving property. This goes hand in hand with a quasilinear construction, encoding, and successive cancellation list decoding procedures based on the Plo ...

Secret Key Generation Using Short Blocklength Polar Coding Over Wireless Channels

Yanina Yurina Shkel

This paper investigates the problem of secret key generation from correlated Gaussian random variables in the short blocklength regime. Short blocklengths are commonly employed in massively connected IoT sensor networks in 5G and beyond wireless systems. P ...

Dynamic SCL Decoder With Path-Flipping for 5G Polar Codes

Andreas Peter Burg, Alexios Konstantinos Balatsoukas Stimming, Yifei Shen

Since polar were ratified as part of the 5G standard, low-complexity polar decoders with close-to-optimum error-rate performance have received significant attention. Compared to successive cancellation (SC) decoding, both SC list and SC flip decoding can i ...

Relaxed Locally Correctable Codes With Nearly-Linear Block Length And Constant Query Complexity

Alessandro Chiesa

Locally correctable codes (LCCs) are error correcting codes C : \Sigmak \rightarrow \Sigman which admit local algorithms that correct any individual symbol of a corrupted codeword via a minuscule number of queries. For systematic codes, this notion is stro ...

Polarization-Adjusted Convolutional (PAC) Codes: Sequential Decoding vs List Decoding

Andreas Peter Burg

In the Shannon lecture at the 2019 International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT), Arikan proposed to employ a one-to-one convolutional transform as a pre-coding step before the polar transform. The resulting codes of this concatenation are called po ...

Secret Key Generation Over Wireless Channels Using Short Blocklength Multilevel Source Polar Coding

Yanina Yurina Shkel

This paper investigates the problem of secret key generation from correlated Gaussian random variables in the short block-length regime. Inspired by the state-of-the-art performance provided by polar codes in the short blocklength regime for channel coding ...

The Stability of Low-Density Parity-Check Codes and Some of its Consequences

Rüdiger Urbanke

We study the stability of low-density parity-check codes under blockwise or bitwise maximum a posteriori decoding, where transmission takes place over a binary-input memoryless output-symmetric channel. Our study stems from the consideration of constructin ...

Enhancing the Reliability of Dense LoRaWAN Networks With Multi-User Receivers

Andreas Peter Burg, Joachim Tobias Tapparel

LoRaWAN is a low-power wireless technology that provides long-range connectivity to battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To minimize the energy consumption of the IoT nodes, LoRaWAN networks use for the uplink a pure non-slotted ALOHA multiple ...

On Codes Decoding a Constant Fraction of Errors on the BSC

Jan Hazla

We strengthen the results from a recent work by the second author, achieving bounds on the weight distribution of binary linear codes that are successful under block-MAP (as well as bit-MAP) decoding on the BEC. We conclude that a linear code that is succe ...

Feedback and Common Information: Bounds and Capacity for Gaussian Networks

Erixhen Sula

Network information theory studies the communication of information in a network and considers its fundamental limits. Motivating from the extensive presence of the networks in the daily life, the thesis studies the fundamental limits of particular network ...

Recursive Projection-Aggregation Decoding of Reed-Muller Codes

Emmanuel Abbé

We propose a new class of efficient decoding algorithms for Reed-Muller (RM) codes over binary-input memoryless channels. The algorithms are based on projecting the code on its cosets, recursively decoding the projected codes (which are lower-order RM code ...

On the Universality of Low-Density Parity-Check Block Codes

Rüdiger Urbanke

An important class of modern channel codes is the capacity-achieving sequences of low-density parity-check block codes. Such sequences are usually designed for the binary erasure channel and are decoded by iterative message-passing algorithms. In this pape ...
