Owing to the advancements in the area of power electronics, efficient and flexible ac to dc conversion is made possible, bringing back into focus the idea of the dc power transmission at various voltage levels. Several technical and economical factors advo ...

Heart failure is a cardiovascular disease affecting between 1 and 2% of the population of developed countries alone - more than 10 million people - with this number bound to increase due to the ageing of the population. This condition starts to develop its ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are interesting soft actuators compared to other actuation technologies owing to large achievable actuation strains, high energy density and fast actuation. However, because DEAs need to be operated under high electric ...

The speed of change in the modern world is impressive. Within the last 50 years, many devices and technologies have significantly transformed their appearance, intrinsic characteristics and improved their performance. Computers have changed from the size o ...

In spite of the dominance of ac technology for the vast majority of power transmission and distribution since the late 19th century, the past decades have seen an increase in use of dc electrical power. In particular, this has been the case both in high vo ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have extremely advantageous characteristics such as lightness, compactness, flexibility, and large displacements. However, in order to operate, they can require voltages in the order of several thousands of volts. Thus ...

We present the effect of electric field, temperature, humidity, type of elastomer material, and encapsulation on the lifetime of silicone-based dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) under DC electric fields. DEAs are promising soft actuators, but little ha ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) require ultra high voltages in the order of several kilo volts to operate. To supply such voltages, a DC-DC flyback converter topology was selected. One of the main advantage of using such a structure is the possibilit ...

Specific applications, such as dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) or electroactive polymers, require to switch voltage levels exceeding the ratings of existing semiconductor devices. In low power application, reversible flyback are widely used to supply ...

In order to reap the benefits of Dielectric Elastomer Actuator (DEA) high energy density, the electronics powering the actuator should be as small as possible. Knowing that only a small fraction of the energy delivered to DEAs is effectively converted into ...

Insects are a constant source of inspiration for roboticists. Their compliant bodies allow them to squeeze through small openings and be highly resilient to impacts. However, making subgram autonomous soft robots untethered and capable of responding intell ...

This thesis contributes to the field of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs). DEAs are electrostatically driven soft actuators that are fast, capable of generating large actuation strains, high forces, and present high power density. A wide range of appli ...

With the never slowing interest in dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) actuators for medical applications, the need to optimize the management of the driving energy of these actuators becomes evermore important. In order to tackle the problematic of th ...

This thesis advances the field of high-voltage thin film transistors (HVTFTs) and dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) by demonstrating a strategy for low-voltage addressing of an array of high voltage soft actuators suspended on a flexible substrate. Fi ...

The ever increasing penetration of renewable energy systems in the distribution grids will inevitably require profound changes in the grid infrastructure. One emerging direction, the medium voltage dc (MVdc) grids, is the cornerstone of this work. They are ...

The applications of surface dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators, (DBD), have known a considerable interest recently in the field of flow control. In general, such actuators consist of two electrodes separated by an insulation covering the lower e ...

A major change in the electrical transmission and distribution system is taking place in Europe at the moment. The shift from a centralised energy production to a distributed generation profoundly changes the behaviour of the grid. Environmental or social ...

Electrical contactors are relays for interputing high currents (up to 2000 A). They consist of three main distinct parts: the low voltage circuit, the high voltage circuit and the linear actuator that moves the contact. The purpose of this thesis is to des ...

Dielectric elastomers are highly promising as functional materials for the rapidly developing field of flexible actuator and generator technology. They offer a unique combination of low densities and large reversible deformations of up to more than 100% in ...

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imagery (fMRI) is an imaging technique allowing the observation of brain activity. Haptic interfaces can be used in conjunction with fMRI to stimulate the subject while measuring brain activity. Using robotic stimulation over ...
