Most realistic kinetic calculations for tokamak plasmas are now required to incorporate the effect of partially ionized high-Z elements arising either from uncontrolled influxes of metallic impurities, such as tungsten in high input power regimes or from m ...

Understanding the relationship between the crystal structure, chemical bonding, and lattice dynamics is crucial for the design of materials with low thermal conductivities, which are essential in fields as diverse as thermoelectrics, thermal barrier coatin ...

This paper presents symmetry reduction for material stochastic Lagrangian systems with advected quantities whose configuration space is a Lie group. Such variational principles yield deterministic as well as stochastic constrained variational principles fo ...

In this letter, we present a custom-designed and flexible readout circuitry for the characterization of flexible and planar electrolyte-gated carbon nanotube field-effect transistor-based biosensors for ammonium detection in sweat. We employed spray-deposi ...

Integrating optically active III-V materials on silicon/insulator platforms is one potential path towards improving the energy efficiency and performance of modern computing. Here we demonstrate the applicability of direct wafer bonding combined with plasm ...

For large scale magnets wound with cable-in-conduit conductors, the safe operation of the joints is of paramount importance to guarantee adequate reliability and stability margin of the whole magnet. For this reason, during the R & D activities undertaken ...

We present the very first density functional theory and dynamical meanfield theory calculations of iron-bound human serum transferrin. Peaks in the optical conductivity at250, 300, and 450 nm were observed, in line with experimental measurements. Spin mult ...

A new algorithm for efficient and fully time-reversible integration of first-principles molecular dynamics based on orbital-free density functional theory (OFDFT) is presented. The algorithm adapts to this nontrivial case, the recently introduced Mass-Zero ...

Water is the liquid of life thanks to its three-dimensional adaptive hydrogen (H)-bond network. Confinement of this network may lead to dramatic structural changes influencing chemical and physical transformations. Although confinement effects occur on a < ...

Evidence that density shoulder broadening is dependent on high main-chamber neutral density is presented. Shoulder broadening does notoccur when the sources for main-chamber neutrals are minimized using divertor baffles and wide gaps to the first wall (sim ...

A search for exclusive two-photon production via photon exchange in proton-proton collisions, pp -> p gamma gamma p with intact protons, is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb(-1) collected in 2016 using the CMS and TOTEM d ...

Biomolecular condensates play numerous roles in cells by selectively concentrating client proteins while excluding others. These functions are likely to be sensitive to the spatial organization of the scaffold proteins forming the condensate. We use coarse ...

Leidenfrost drops were recently found to host strong dynamics. In the present study, we investigate both experimentally and theoretically the flow structures and stability inside a Leidenfrost water drop as it evaporates, starting with a large puddle. As r ...

The dynamics of proteins that are associated with their function typically occur on the microsecond timescale, orders of magnitude faster than the time resolution of cryo-electron microscopy. We have recently introduced a novel approach to time-resolved cr ...

We recently showed that silicon heterojunction solar cell with MoOx-based hole-selective contact could reach 23.5% in efficiency with MoOx layers of 4 nm. Such thin MoOx layer enables a considerable current-density gain of over 1 mA/cm(2) compared to the u ...

The neutral beam injectors of the ITER experiment will rely on negative ion sources to produce 16.7 MW beams of H/D particles accelerated at 1 MeV. The prototype of these sources was built and is currently operated in the SPIDER (Source for the Production ...

Photonic integrated circuits are becoming increasingly more complex, especially with the emergence of programmable photonic circuits. These require many tunable photonic elements, such as electro-optic phase shifters and tunable couplers. We will discuss o ...
