Tick-borne encephalitis virus is an enveloped, pathogenic, RNA virus in the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus. Viral particles are formed when the nucleocapsid, consisting of an RNA genome and multiple copies of the capsid protein, buds through the end ...

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a subset of metal-organic frameworks with more than 200 characterized crystalline and amorphous networks made of divalent transition metal centres (for example, Zn2+ and Co2+) linked by imidazolate linkers. ZIF th ...

The growing needs for human healthcare have driven the development of wearable devices for monitoring the health status of an individual. Polymers represent a promising platform for such devices due to their ability to form an intimate contact between soft ...

Biologically inspired solid-state nanopores are artificial openings or apertures in thin membranes similar to natural protein ion channels in a lipid bilayer of cell membranes. In solid-state nanopores, a thin insulating membrane with single or multiple po ...

Applying hydrostatic pressure with suspended 2D material thin membranes allows probing the effects of lateral strain on the ion and fluid transport through nanopores. We demonstrate how both permanent and temporary delamination of 2D materials can be induc ...

Molybdenum atomic-doping on bio-waste derived nitrogen-doped conductive carbon electrocatalyst was synthesized and investigated for the dinitrogen reduction to ammonia in alkaline media. The assessment of the catalytic activity was found to be non-trivial ...

Monitoring human sweat with wearable biochemical sensors could give insights into the hydration, fatigue, and health status, tracking the variations of biomarkers non-invasively and in real-time. In this field, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) a ...

The synthesis of molecular-sieving two-dimensional zeolitic membranes by the assembly of crystalline building blocks without resorting to the secondary growth process is highly desirable. The precise pore size for molecular sieving, ultrathin thickness, an ...

We present the Canopy Pavilion, a lightweight shading structure for a social gathering space. The shading surface is realized as a tensioned auxetic linkage membrane, composed of two double-curved anticlastic layers separated by a compression pole. The mem ...

Growth approaches that limit the interface area between layers to nanoscale regions are emerging as a promising pathway to limit the interface defect formation due to mismatching lattice parameters or thermal expansion coefficient. Interfacial defect mitig ...

This paper presents the use of a novel type of resonators made of a thin membrane of Y-cut Lithium Niobate that has an array of interdigitated electrodes on the top, and a floating metal on the bottom. Each electrode gives rise to a quasi-independent reson ...

The optical and electrical properties of Ru1-xTixO2 (0

Nanopores are both a tool to study single-molecule biophysics and nanoscale ion transport, but also a promising material for desalination or osmotic power generation. Understanding the physics underlying ion transport through nano-sized pores allows better ...

High-energy-density and low-cost calcium (Ca) batteries have been proposed as 'beyond-Li-ion' electrochemical energy storage devices. However, they have seen limited progress due to challenges associated with developing electrolytes showing reductive/oxida ...

The characterization of biological interfaces is widely recognized as one of the main challenges for modern biology. In particular, biological membranes are nowadays known to be an active environment that allows membrane proteins to perform their work and ...

Giant unilamellar lipid vesicles (GUVs) are widely used as model membrane systems and provide an excellent basis to construct artificial cells. To construct more sophisticated artificial cells, proteins-in particular membrane proteins-need to be incorporat ...

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with atom- or few-atoms-thick layers have emerged as building-blocks in the synthesis of the next-generation membrane-based separations. Generally, 2D material-based membranes display high permeation and high selectivity due ...

Electroporation is defined as cell membrane permeabilization under the application of electric fields. The mechanism of hydrophilic pore formation is not yet well understood. When cells are exposed to electric fields, electrical stresses act on their surfa ...

Firstly, this thesis presents the in vivo evaluation of a previously developed model system that utilizes CD4+ TE/M cells decorated with up to 100 polystyrene based nanoparticles per cell by maleimide thiol conjugation. These nanoparticle T-cell conjugates ...

Large-scale deployment of thin-film photovoltaics will be facilitatedthrough earth-abundant components. Herein, selective area epitaxyand lateral overgrowth epitaxy are explored for the growth of zincphosphide (Zn3P2), a promising earth-abundant absorber. ...
