Hierarchical galactic evolution models predict that mergers drive galaxy growth, producing low surface brightness (LSB) tidal features that trace galaxies’ late assembly. These faint structures encode information about past mergers and are sensitive to the ...

Star-forming clumps have been found to significantly influence the star formation of gas-rich z > 1 galaxies. Using public data from JWST/NIRCam (Cosmic Evolution Survey; COSMOS-Web) and Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA; Fiber-Multi Object Spectr ...

Context. The Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) is a satellite orbiting the Milky Way that has experienced multiple stripping events due to tidal interactions with our Galaxy. Its accretion history has led to a distinct stellar overdensity, whi ...

Despite the ubiquity of clumpy star-forming galaxies at high-redshift, the origin of clumps are still largely unconstrained due to the limited observations that can validate the mechanisms for clump formation. We postulate that if clumps form due to the ac ...

The Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy has been challenging to study in a comprehensive way as it is highly extended on the sky, with an uncertain but large tidal radius of between 80- 160 arcminutes (or 3- 4 kpc), and an extremely low central surface brightn ...

Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) has the potential to significantly influence galaxy formation in comparison to the cold, collisionless dark matter paradigm (CDM), resulting in observable effects. This study aims to elucidate this influence and to demon ...

This thesis is concerned with improving the interpretability of network summaries in both a theoretical and an applied framework, with an application to clinically relevant problems in neuroscience. The theoretical part of this thesis is concerned with gra ...

The increasing accumulation of medical data brings the hope of data-driven medical decision-making, but data's increasing complexity—as text or images in electronic health records—calls for complex models, such as machine learning. Here, we review how mach ...

Since the 1960s, the prevalence of pollen allergy has increased worldwide in developed countries and this trend is continuing, exacerbated by climate change. In the 20th century, operational pollen monitoring networks have been set-up to respond to the nee ...

In recent decades, the rapid growth of cloud computing has transformed the technological landscape and profoundly impacted our daily lives, driven by the demand for secure, flexible, and cost-effective computing solutions. To meet these demands, computing ...

Time course measurements are used for many applications in biomedical research, ranging from growth curves to drug efficacy testing and high-throughput screening. Statistical methods used to analyze the resulting longitudinal data, such as t-tests or repea ...

Background and Objective: Cardiovascular diseases, a leading cause of noncommunicable disease-related deaths, require early and accurate detection to improve patient outcomes. Taking advantage of advances in machine learning and deep learning, multiple app ...

Few organisms offer a window as precise and tractable into the exploration of biological form as Drosophila melanogaster. Yet the extraordinary natural variation in its brain morphology has remained largely uncharted, restrained by limitations in imaging, ...

The near-infrared calibration unit (NI-CU) on board Euclid’s Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) is the first astronomical calibration lamp based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to be operated in space. Euclid is a mission in ESA’s Cosmic Visi ...

Cross-view localization, the task of estimating a camera's 3-degrees-of-freedom (3-DoF) pose by aligning ground-level images with satellite images, is crucial for large-scale outdoor applications like autonomous navigation and augmented reality. Existing m ...

Pose-invariant face recognition has become a challenging problem for modern AI-based face recognition systems. It aims at matching a profile face captured in the wild with a frontal face registered in a database. Existing methods perform face frontalizatio ...

Challenges inherent to high-resolution and high signal-to-noise data as well as model degeneracies can cause systematic biases in analyses of strong lens systems. In the past decade, the number of lens modeling methods has significantly increased, from pur ...

The diffuse stellar component of galaxy clusters made up of intergalactic stars is termed the intracluster light (ICL). Although there is a developing understanding of the mechanisms by which the ICL is formed, no strong consensus has yet been reached on w ...
