During the last two decades, ultrafast in-volume laser-based processing of transparent materials has emerged as a key 3D-printing method for manufacturing a variety of complex integrated photonic devices and micro-parts. Yet, identifying suitable laser pro ...

Chip-based, single-frequency and low phase-noise integrated photonic laser diodes emitting in the violet (412 nm) and blue (461 nm) regime are demonstrated. The GaN-based edge-emitting laser diodes were coupled to high-quality on-chip micro-resonators for ...

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a group of processing technologies which has the potential to revolutionize manufacturing by allowing easy manufacturing of complex shapes and small series. One AM-method which is of high interest for processing of metals is ...

Phase transitions of thermal systems and the laser threshold were first connected more than forty years ago. Despite the nonequilibrium nature of the laser, the Landau theory of thermal phase transitions, applied directly to the Scully-Lamb laser model (SL ...

In a LIDAR device (100) a laser light source (110) generates first laser light having a first laser frequency which is frequency modulated with a first frequency modulation. A non-linear optical element (120) receives the first laser light and generates th ...

The widespread use of antibiotics and antifungal drugs has provoked an increasing number of multi-resistant bacteria and fungi. The emergence of multiresistance to antibiotics has been now recognized as a very serious public health issue. In order to targe ...

Depth sensing is an increasingly important feature in many applications of consumer, automotive, augmented/virtual reality (AR-VR), space and bio-medical imaging. Long range, high depth resolution, high spatial resolution, and high frame rates are often co ...

Despite extensive research efforts in the field of laser welding, the imperfect repeatability of the weld quality still represents an open topic. Indeed, the inherent complexity of the underlying physical phenomena prevents the implementation of an effecti ...

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) or Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is the most studied laser-based additive manufacturing process for metals and alloys. One important issue in SLM is the time-consuming identification of a process window leading to quasi full ...

Cladding of a Zr-based metallic glass (MG) on an aluminum substrate was conducted using a layer-wise laser additive manufacturing (AM) method, leading to relative densities higher than 99%. The thickness of the cladding was about 300 μm. The effect of lase ...

Coherent ranging, also known as frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) laser-based light detection and ranging (lidar)(1) is used for long-range three-dimensional distance and velocimetry in autonomous driving(2,3). FMCW lidar maps distance to frequenc ...

Direct detection of single photons at wavelengths beyond 2 mu m under ambient conditions remains an outstanding technological challenge. One promising approach is frequency upconversion into the visible (VIS) or near-infrared (NIR) domain, where single-pho ...

We characterize a 1.14 mu m ultrastable semiconductor laser system for precision spectroscopy of Tm inner-shell clock transition using a frequency comb. We stabilize both the repetition and the carrier-envelope offset frequencies of a commercial Ti : sapph ...

Tungsten carbide with microsized particle powders are commonly used embedded in a tough binder metal. The application of these composites is not limited to cutting tools, WC based material has been increasingly used in gaskets and other mechanical parts wi ...

Parity-time (PT)-symmetric wave devices, which exploit balanced interactions between material gain and loss, exhibit extraordinary properties, including lasing and flux-conserving scattering processes. In a seemingly different research field, periodically ...

We present a novel industrial-grade prototype version of a continuous-wave 193 nm laser system entirely based on solid state pump laser technology. Deep-ultraviolet emission is realized by frequency-quadrupling an amplified diode laser and up to 20 mW of o ...

The experimental study of the InPlaser diode stabilization by high-Q Si3N4 microresonator is presented. We demonstrate how this stabilized laser diode considered as a pump laser may be used for optical frequency comb generation in the same microresonator. ...

In this paper, we review the current state and discuss new developments in opto-optical modulation (OOM) of semiconductor elements for frequency comb self-referenced stabilization of ultrafast lasers. This method has been successfully used for carrier-enve ...

Dual-comb interferometry utilizes two optical frequency combs to map the optical field's spectrum to a radio-frequency signal without using moving parts, allowing improved speed and accuracy. However, the method is compounded by the complexity and demandin ...

Sensing of atmospheric trace gases is crucial for climate monitoring and to predict global climate changes. The required global coverage and spatial resolution have driven the studies of space-borne differential absorption lidar (DIAL) instruments to remot ...
