Photonics integrated circuits are a promising solution for the growing demands of data transmission and future system-on-chip technologies. Within this context, nonlinear optical interactions offer unique opportunities for all-optical processing, sampling, ...

Combining optical gain in direct-bandgap III-V materials with tunable optical feedback offered by advanced photonic integrated circuits is key to chip-scale external-cavity lasers (ECL), offering wideband tunability along with low optical linewidths. Exter ...

Chip-based, single-frequency and low phase-noise integrated photonic laser diodes emitting in the violet (412 nm) and blue (461 nm) regime are demonstrated. The GaN-based edge-emitting laser diodes were coupled to high-quality on-chip micro-resonators for ...

All-optical poling enables reconfigurable and efficient quasi-phase-matching for second-order parametric frequency conversion in silicon nitride integrated photonics. Here, we report broadly tunable milliwatt-level second-harmonic generation in a small fre ...

Thermal motion of a room-temperature mechanical resonator typically dominates the quantum backaction of its position measurement. This is a longstanding barrier for exploring cavity optomechanics at room temperature. In order to enter the quantum regime of ...

Silicon photonics enables wafer-scale integration of optical functionalities on chip. Silicon-based laser frequency combs can provide integrated sources of mutually coherent laser lines for terabit-per-second transceivers, parallel coherent light detection ...

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) has emerged as a promising material for integrated nonlinear photonics and has been used for broadband soliton microcombs and low-pulse-energy supercontinuum generation. Therefore, understanding all nonlinear optical properties of S ...

Microresonators are fundamental building blocks of any photonic integrated circuit, as they can be used as filters, modulators, sensors, and to enhance light emission. If these resonators are suspended and are free to oscillate, we can exploit the interact ...

Diamond is an exceptional material - hard, stiff, transparent, which makes it ideal for the fabrication of optical and mechanical systems that take advantage of these properties. Diamond is not only "better", but it offers the possibility of integrating br ...

Since the 1960s, alloys are grouped into two classes, featuring bound states in the bandgap (I - GaP:N, ZnTe:O, etc.) or additional, non-discrete, band states (II - SiGe, GaAsP, InGaAs, etc.). Therefore, one can observe either a rich and informative zoo of ...

Silicon nitride has recently attracted significant interest for nonlinear integrated optics. In addition to its excellent linear properties, silicon nitride offers a bandgap larger than silicon, and a wide transparency window spanning from the visible all ...

Silicon is today the main material used in electronics. It is a very advanced and mature technology. It is therefore clear that new technological concepts and materials should be introduced through the integration on the silicon platform. III-V semiconduct ...

We report a numerical and experimental investigation of fabrication tolerances and outcoupling in optically pumped III-nitride nanolasers operating near lambda = 460 nm, in which feedback is provided by a one-dimensional photonic crystal nanobeam cavity an ...

During the last decades, the usage of silicon photodetectors, both as stand-alone sensor or integrated in arrays, grew tremendously. They are now found in almost any application and any market range, from leisure products to high-end scientific apparatuses ...

The III-nitride semiconductor material system - (InAlGa)N - is of highest interest for optoelectronic applications due to its direct bandgap, tunable from the ultraviolet to the infrared spectral range. The most well-known are white light-emitting diodes, ...

We report the design and optical characterization of fully suspended wire waveguides and photonic crystal (PhC) membranes fabricated on a gallium nitride layer grown on silicon substrate operating at 1.5 mu m. W1-type PhC waveguides are coupled with suspen ...

Like photonic crystals have revolutionized the way of manipulating optical waves at the sub-micron scale, phononic crystals have more recently played similar decisive role for sound waves, or more generally elastic waves. Then, the idea of coupling light a ...

The main topic of this thesis is the fabrication and characterization of structures smaller than the wavelength of light, for operation in the visible or near infrared spectral range. In the first part of this thesis, the fabrication of periodic structures ...

Photonic crystals are stuctures in which the refractive index varies periodically on the wavelength scale in one, two or three dimensions. Due to interference effects, these structures can forbid light propagation over a large spectral range called "the ph ...
