What training should engineering students receive to enable them to contribute to reducing bias, discrimination and the persistent lack of diversity in engineering? Collaboration is central to professional engineering work and, consequently, teamwork and g ...

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are the subject of massive interest due to the range of applications they can provide at a huge scale while building on well-established CMOS technologies. One of the critical parameters defining a technology's maturity ...

Silicon photonics has emerged as a mature technology that is expected to play a key role in critical emerging applications, including very high data rate optical communications, distance sensing for autonomous vehicles, photonic-accelerated computing, and ...

High temperature superconducting (HTS) materials are widely utilized in various design proposals for fusion magnets, resulting in enhanced performance of the machines compared to the past. However, a reliable quench detection in HTS conductors remains an o ...

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have found potential applications in many areas of electronics, such as sensing, memory systems, optoelectronics, and power. Despite an intense experimental work, the literature is lacking of accurate modeling of nonvolatil ...

The hydrostatic compaction of composites comprising a closely-packed particle-bed filled by a dense matrix is measured experimentally using a fluid-pressurization apparatus. A highly compliant polymer or pure aluminium are infiltrated into preforms of pack ...

This paper presents explicit solutions for two related non-convex information extremization problems due to Gray and Wyner in the Gaussian case. The first problem is the Gray-Wyner network subject to a sum-rate constraint on the two private links. Here, ou ...

In vitro models of human liver functions are used across a diverse range of applications in preclinical drug development and disease modeling, with particular increasing interest in models that capture facets of liver inflammatory status. This study invest ...

We introduce a lock-in method to increase the phase contrast in incoherent differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging. This method improves the phase sensitivity by the analog removal of the background. The use of a smart pixel detector with in-pixel signal ...

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers revolutionized long-haul optical communications and laser technology. Erbium ions could provide a basis for efficient optical amplification in photonic integrated circuits but their use remains impractical as a result of insuf ...

A model-free iterative learning control strategy (ILC) in nonrepetitive trajectories, applied to robotic manipulators is presented in this article. The development of this ILC controller is derived in general case for second-order nonlinear multi-input mul ...

We propose an optical proof-of-work scheme that feeds data encoded into wavelength-division multiplexed modes through a programmable photonic network. We verify robustness by modeling network dispersion, allowing for energy-efficient optical alternatives t ...

Conventional input/output (IO) links consume power, independent of changes in the bandwidth demand by the system they are deployed in. As the system is designed to satisfy the peak bandwidth demand, most of the time the IO links are idle but still consumin ...

The exponential growth of Internet traffic and related demands for higher communication speed pushes processor-to-processor and processor-to-memory interconnects to provide further higher data-rate. Often time, processor-to-memory interconnectsâ speed is ...

With the development of quantum optics, photon correlations acquired a prominent role as a tool to test our understanding of physics, and played a key role in verifying the validity of quantum mechanics. The spatial and temporal correlations in a light fie ...

A signal processing apparatus, being configured for transmitting and receiving coherent parallel optical signals, comprises a transmitter apparatus including a first single soliton micro-resonator device and a modulator device, wherein the first single sol ...

The exponential growth in computing power and multimedia services has caused a tremendous increase in data traffic in recent years. This increase in data traffic brings a strong demand for data bandwidth of electrical input/output (I/O) links and pushes th ...

We experimentally investigate the effects of erbium-doped fiber amplifier induced pump noise on soliton Kerr frequency combs for 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission. We find that the optical carrier-to-noise ratios (OCNRs) of the comb lin ...

Decentralized machine learning over peer-to-peer networks is very appealing for it enables to learn personalized models without sharing users data, nor relying on any central server. Peers can improve upon their locally trained model across a network graph ...

Solitons are waveforms that preserve their shape while propagating, as a result of a balance of dispersion and nonlinearity(1,2). Soliton-based data transmission schemes were investigated in the 1980s and showed promise as a way of overcoming the limitatio ...
