The number of transient operations in hydraulic machinery connected to power grid, notably start-ups and shut-downs, has observed a substantial increase in recent decades, primarily driven by the global shift toward intermittent renewable energy sources. S ...

The global imperative to transition from fossil fuel-based energy sources to renewable alternatives has become increasingly urgent in the pursuit of sustainable and renewable power generation. This paradigm shift necessitates innovative approaches to manag ...

Climate change is predicted to increase atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, exacerbating soil drought, and thus enhancing tree evaporative demand and mortality. Yet, few studies have addressed the longer-term drought acclimation strategy of trees, particul ...

Hydropower plants play a crucial role in the power system facing ambitious renewable energy targets. Due to their inherent controllability, they are well suited to provide flexibility to the grid. However, an increased flexibility provision leads to a prol ...

Cavitation bubbles, extensively investigated in fluid mechanics, present enduring challenges in hydraulic machinery, while holding considerable potential for practical applications in biomedicine and sonochemistry. Despite more than a century of research, ...

In the canton of Bern, Switzerland, the “Le Bez” torrent is known for its flash floods, causing sediment and wood debris buildup in Villeret village settled on the alluvial fan. To mitigate this issue, a sediment/wood trap system is being implemented upstr ...

In an attempt to go beyond the conventional laboratory experiments widely reported in literature around the emerging technique of soil bio-cementation, this work addresses key challenges related to its large-scale application. Precisely, a state-of-the-art ...

In high energy physics, semiconductor-based sensors are widely used in particle tracking applications. These sensors are typically glued on low-mass cooling substrates, which guarantee the correct thermal management and, at the same time, minimise their in ...

Incorporating pressurized fluidic circuits into textiles can enable muscular support, thermoregulation, and haptic feedback in a convenient wearable form factor. However, conventional rigid pumps, with their associated noise and vibration, are unsuitable f ...

The dataset supporting 'Fiber pumps for wearable fluidic systems', published in Science in March 2023. In this work, we present a fluidic pump in the form of a flexible and stretchable tube. These tubes - or 'fiber pumps' - can generate significant fluidic ...

The hydraulic design, computational analysis, and experimental investigations of a high-speed small-scale turbopump for mobile waste heat recovery applications based on organic Rankine cycle systems are presented in this paper. Such applications demand hig ...

Laboratory three-point bending experiments are carried out to evaluate the effect of various fluids on the tensile strength of granite. The granite specimens were tested under both dry and saturated conditions. The fluids used to saturate the granite inclu ...

A hybrid design of the Central Solenoid is under study within the conceptual design phase of the European DEMO fusion reactor. It is based on HTS conductors in the innermost high-field layers, and Nb3Sn and NbTi conductors for field values below 15 T. Sinc ...

In the framework of the XFLEX HYDRO H2020 European Project, the pumped-storage power plant of Grand'Maison (France), owned by Electricité De France, focuses on the implementation of the hydraulic short-circuit (HSC) operating mode. This mode increases the ...

Nowadays, the importance of providing frequency stability to power systems with hydropower units is significantly increasing due to the growing proportion of volatile renewable energy sources. However, the provision of such services, as frequency containme ...

The Rhône River, second largest in Switzerland, has already been corrected twice (1863-1893; 1930-1960) to ensure safety and economic development in the Rhône valley. However, in October 2000, the highest flood of the century occurred showing the limitatio ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss–French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its commissioning, the operation of the four spillway gates has been responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. The future scour potentia ...

The hydropower sector has recently raised the interest in pump as turbine (PaT) that can be a valid trade-off between capital cost and performance in micro-scale installations. Nevertheless, the modest efficiency of PaTs often restricts their exploitation. ...

It is well known that hydraulic machines experience various types of flow instabilities causing a negative influence on the system under off-design operations. The transfer matrix method correlating the flow properties in upstream and downstream of hydraul ...

In the present paper, a new control method for tip-leakage vortex (TLV) cavitation is proposed. This method, which combines the effects of grooves and winglets, is made of overhanging grooves (OHGs) fitted at the tip of a hydrofoil. Experimental and numeri ...
