Among the numerous existing chemical motifs, alkenes, alkynes, enol ethers and enamides, with an unsaturated carbon-carbon bond, are versatile functional groups that are found in many natural products and bioactive compounds. They are widely used as valuab ...

Indole is one of the most important heterocycles widely present in bioactive natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and materials. Being easily accessible, the 2-nitrostyrenes are attractive starting materials for the indole synthesis and the Cad ...

Understanding the mechanisms that enable cancer cells to metastasize is essential in preventing cancer progression. Here we examine the metabolic adaptations of metastasis-initiating cells (MICs) in female breast cancer and how those shape their metastatic ...

One of the biggest driving forces in cement research today is the mitigation of the CO2 emissions caused by its production. A potential solution to reduce the environmental impact is to replace cement with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). This ...

d-amino acid oxidase (DAO) is a peroxisomal enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of several neutral and basic d-amino acids to their corresponding alpha-keto acids. In most mammalian species studied, high DAO activity is found in the kidney, liv ...

Organic chemistry is essential for the development of a modern society and technical progress requires the continuous development of synthetic methodologies Novel, efficient, selective and flexible protocols are employed to access complex frameworks from s ...

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries, which are being proposed as large-scale energy storage solutions because of their unparalleled safety and cost advantage, are composed of a positive host (cathode) material, a metallic zinc anode, and a mildly acidic aqueous elect ...

The synthesis of three potentially tetradentate, N2S2 Schiff-base-ligands, containing a disulfide bond, (LSSLThio)-S-Thio(L1), (LSSLBr)-S-Br(L2) and (LSSLDiMeO)-S-DiMeO (L3) are reported. These ligands undergo reductive disulfide bond scission upon reactio ...

Methyltransferases (MTases) form a large family of enzymes that methylate a diverse set of targets, ranging from the three major biopolymers to small molecules. Most of these MTases use the cofactor S-adenosyl-l-Methionine (AdoMet) as a methyl source. In r ...

Cardiac dysfunction is often associated with a shift in substrate preference for ATP production. Hyperpolarized (HP) (13)C magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) has the unique ability to detect real-time metabolic changes in vivo due to its high sensitivit ...

Isonitrile 1 due to its carbene-like reactivity serves generally as a one-carbon synthon in a diverse set of organic transformations. We report in this article that the isocyano group can also act as a polarized triple bond to undergo, as a two-atom syntho ...

Alterations in the hepatic lipid content (HLC) and fatty acid composition are associated with disruptions in whole body metabolism, both in humans and in rodent models, and can be non-invasively assessed by (1) H-MRS in vivo. We used (1) H-MRS to character ...

N-Acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG), the monomer of the world's second most abundant biopolymer chitin, has been for the first time converted to its corresponding amide/amino substituted sugar alcohols, smaller C2-4 polyols and N-acetylmonoethanolamine (NMEA), ov ...

Enol esters are versatile synthetic building blocks which can be elaborated by a wide variety of transformations. The classical synthesis by O-selective enolate acylation often hampers control of the E/Z selectivity with highly substituted substrates. A rh ...

Context/Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the regulation of the fuel partitioning and energy metabolism in skeletal muscle during lipid overfeeding in healthy men. Design/Participants/Intervention: Thirty-nine healthy volunteers were overfed ...

Cardiac and skeletal muscle function relies on a continuous energy production via fatty acid metabolism and mitochondrial oxidation of pyruvate, with a fine balance between substrate delivery and utilization. Changes in metabolism are increasingly being im ...

The monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1 or SLC16A1) is a carrier of short-chain fatty acids, ketone bodies, and lactate in several tissues. Genetically modified C57BL/6J mice were produced by targeted disruption of the mct1 gene in order to understand the ...

We investigated the effect on the electronic properties of aluminum (Al)-zinc oxide (ZnO) films by modulating the radio frequency sputtering power. Our experimental results show that increasing the sputtering power increases the Al doping concentration, de ...

NOVELTY - A plate comprises an electroconductive substrate (1) at least partially covered with sintered nanoparticles (2), deposited as an array of individual spots, for use as a sorbing phase for a sample, and for supporting ionization of sorbed sample mo ...

This paper presents a few examples of the application of electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) to solidification problems. For directionally solidified Al-Zn samples, this technique could reveal the change in dendrite growth directions from < 100 > to < ...
