Which phenomenon slows down the dynamics in supercooled liquids and turns them into glasses is a long-standing question of condensed matter. Most popular theories posit that as the temperature decreases, many events must occur in a coordinated fashion on a ...

In the nanoscale regime, flow behaviors for liquids show qualitative deviations from bulk expectations. In this work, we reveal by molecular dynamics simulations that plug flow down to nanoscale induces molecular friction that leads to a new flow structure ...

A new mesoscopic model able to describe percolation of globular-equiaxed grains, highly relevant for hot tearing formation in castings, has been developed. This model is inspired from the granular model of Sistaninia et al. [1-5] that considers polyhedral ...

We present a thermally controlled plasmonic substrate in contact with a liquid crystal offering spectral tunings similar to 18.7 nm within similar to 18 degrees C at LC nematic phase. Nematic/ isotropic transition also enables similar to 12 nm spectral cha ...

A numerical method for the solution to the density-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations modeling the flow of N immiscible incompressible liquid phases with a free surface is proposed. It allows to model the flow of an arbitrary number of liquid ...

Solid-liquid interfaces are central to nanoscale science and technology and control processes as diverse as self-assembly, heterogeneous catalysis, wetting, electrochemistry, or protein function. Experimentally, measuring the structure and dynamics of soli ...

Reaction systems are typically represented by first-principles models that describe the evolution of the states (typically concentrations, volume and temperature) by means of conservation equations of differential nature and constitutive equations of algeb ...

We present explicit expressions of the helicity conservation in nematic liquid-crystal flows, for both the Ericksen-Leslie and Landau-de Gennes theories. This is done by using a minimal coupling argument that leads to an Euler-like equation for a modified ...

In a previous paper, 1 we proposed an optofluidic modulator based on peristaltic flow. A microchannel made of polydimethylsiloxane is filled with nematic liquid crystal molecules that align homeotropically in the steady state. Once we apply a periodic peri ...

Aluminum zinc alloys constitute an important class of wrought alloys, the so-called 7000 series, and are also widely used as anti-corrosion coatings of steel sheets. They are also interesting from a more fundamental point of view because zinc, a hexagonal ...

Hot tearing is one of the most severe defects observed in castings, e.g. in billets or sheet ingots of aluminum alloys produced by DC casting. It is due to both tensile strains and a lack of interdendritic feeding in the mushy zone. In order to predict thi ...

This work describes the synthesis as well as the photophysical and mesomorphic properties of new luminescent liquid crystals able to emit narrow bands in the visible range, and featuring lanthanide ions incorporated into pro-mesogenic coronands. In order t ...

Many fundamental processes that govern the function of biological cells occur on or immediately under the cell membrane. Fluorescence marking of specific sites has had a large impact in the recognition of these processes. In addition, observation in an app ...
