Situational awareness strategies are essential for the reliable and secure operation of the electric power grid which represents critical infrastructure in modern society. With the rise of converter-interfaced renewable generation and the consequent shift ...

Chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) are synthetic, transmembrane proteins that trigger immune cell signaling following their engagement. They have been first utilized in T cells and later in natural killer (NK) cells to redirect their cytotoxicity toward a s ...

The goal of this thesis is to study continuous-domain inverse problems for the reconstruction of sparse signals and to develop efficient algorithms to solve such problems computationally. The task is to recover a signal of interest as a continuous function ...

Community structure in graph-modeled data appears in a range of disciplines that comprise network science. Its importance relies on the influence it bears on other properties of graphs such as resilience, or prediction of missing connections. Nevertheless, ...

The evaluation of the signal frequency and Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) from voltage or current waveforms is used for critical grid control, monitoring and protection applications. However, when step changes in the amplitude or phase of the signal o ...

In the analysis of power grid waveforms, the presence of amplitude or phase steps can disrupt the estimation of frequency and rate-of-change-of-frequency (ROCOF). Standard methods based on phasor-models fail in the extraction of signal parameters during th ...

With the expanding role of converter-interfaced distributed energy resources, modern power grids are evolving towards low-inertia networks that are increasingly vulnerable to extreme dynamics. Consequently, advanced signal processing techniques are needed ...

As power grids transition towards low-inertia net-works based on converter-interfaced renewable energy resources, they become increasingly vulnerable to extreme dynamics. Currently, the most advanced methods for signal processing in power systems are embed ...

Sampling has always been at the heart of signal processing providing a bridge between the analogue world and discrete representations of it, as our ability to process data in continuous space is quite limited. Furthermore, sampling plays a key part in unde ...

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are 7-transmembrane alpha-helical integral membrane proteins on which cells heavily rely to receive information regarding their external environment. These receptors are able to transfer information to intracellular down ...

We present a polarization-insensitive metasurface processor to perform spatial asymmetric filtering of an incident beam, thereby allowing for real-time parallel analog processing. To enable massive parallel processing, we introduce a multiple-input multipl ...

Cancer is a leading cause of death in the world, and the mechanisms that underlie this disease are still not completely understood. As cancer develops and progresses, cells undergo a diversity of mutations that sustain their rapid proliferation and the eva ...

Compressed Sensing teaches us that measurements can be traded for offline computation if the signal being sensed has a simple enough representation. Proper decoders can exactly recover the high-dimensional signal of interest from a lower-dimensional vector ...

Whether in factory or household scenarios, rhythmic movements play a crucial role in many daily-life tasks. In this paper we propose a Fourier movement primitive (FMP) representation to learn such type of skills from human demonstrations. Our approach take ...

Artists often take advantage of the limitations of the human visual system to create art that provides new experiences for the observers. Similarly, in this thesis, we explore new computational artistic compositions that create new visual experiences by re ...

Author summary Adenylyl cyclases (ACs) are enzymes that can translate extracellular signals into the intracellular molecule cAMP, which is thus a 2nd messenger of extracellular events. The brain expresses nine membrane-bound AC variants, and AC5 is the dom ...

This paper considers the problem of reconstructing raw signals from random projections in the context of time-of-flight imaging with an array of sensors. It presents a new signal model, coined as multi-channel pulse-stream model, which exploits pulse-strea ...

An emerging way to deal with high-dimensional non-euclidean data is to assume that the underlying structure can be captured by a graph. Recently, ideas have begun to emerge related to the analysis of time-varying graph signals. This work aims to elevate th ...

We consider the problem of distributed representation of signals in sensor networks, where sensors exchange quantized information with their neighbors. The signals of interest are assumed to have a sparse representation with spectral graph dictionaries. We ...

Reducing sensing time is one major concern in clinical diagnostics. In the present work, a robust measurement system is developed aiming at the faster and easier signal acquisition of memristive biosensors. Sensing chips consisting of nanofabricated silico ...
