In lung and prostate adenocarcinomas, neuroendocrine (NE) transformation to an aggressive derivative resembling small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is associated with poor prognosis. We previously described dependency of SCLC on the nuclear transporter exportin ...

Background: Cancer genome sequencing enables accurate classification of tumours and tumour subtypes. However, prediction performance is still limited using exome-only sequencing and for tumour types with low somatic mutation burden such as many paediatri ...

The identification and segmentation of histological regions of interest can provide significant support to pathologists in their diagnostic tasks. However, segmentation methods are constrained by the difficulty in obtaining pixel-level annotations, which a ...

Understanding the mechanisms that enable cancer cells to metastasize is essential in preventing cancer progression. Here we examine the metabolic adaptations of metastasis-initiating cells (MICs) in female breast cancer and how those shape their metastatic ...

Single-molecule imaging methods are of importance in structural biology, and specifically in the imaging of proteins, since they can elucidate conformational variability and structural changes that might be lost in imaging methods relying on averaging proc ...

Background Currently, multi-parametric prostate MRI (mpMRI) consists of a qualitative T-2, diffusion weighted, and dynamic contrast enhanced imaging. Quantification of T-2 imaging might further standardize PCa detection and support artificial intelligence ...

Purpose Purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of quantitative T2/ADC values in differentiating between PCa and lesions showing non-specific inflammatory infiltrates and atrophy, features of chronic prostatitis, as the most common his ...

Metabolic reprogramming is critical for tumor initiation and progression. However, the exact impact of specific metabolic changes on cancer progression is poorly understood. Here, we integrate multimodal analyses of primary and metastatic clonally-related ...

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are the most common bacterial pathogens causing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Driven by the development of antibiotic resistant UPEC strains, UTIs have become a major public health issue and generate substantial hea ...

This study addresses the roles of nuclear receptor corepressor 2 (NCOR2) in prostate cancer (PC) progression in response to androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Reduced NCOR2 expression significantly associates with shorter disease-free survival in patients ...

This study aimed to explore the value of synchrotron-based phase-contrast microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) in pulmonary vascular pathobiology. The microanatomy of the lung is complex with intricate branching patterns. Tissue sections are therefore diffi ...

Polycystic kidneys frequently associate with mutations in individual components of cilia, basal bodies or centriolar satellites that perturb complex protein networks. In this review, we focus on the RNA-binding protein Bicaudal-C1 (BICC1) which was found m ...

In time-to-event settings, the presence of competing events complicates the definition of causal effects. Here we propose the new separable effects to study the causal effect of a treatment on an event of interest. The separable direct effect is the treatm ...

Early diagnosis of acute cartilage injuries enables monitoring of disease progression and improved treatment option planning to prevent post-traumatic osteoarthritis. In contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT), the changes in cationic agent diffusion ...

For the first time memristive biosensors developed by the incorporation of scAbs (single-chain antibody fragments) enabling label-free detection of free Prostate Specific Antigen (fPSA) for early-stage detection of prostate cancer (PC) are reported. In add ...

Expression levels of retinoic acid receptor gamma (NR1B3/RARG, encodes RAR gamma) are commonly reduced in prostate cancer (PCa). Therefore, we sought to establish the cellular and gene regulatory consequences of reduced RAR gamma expression, and determine ...

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) as a major health problem in industrialized countries is highly preventable and can be successfully treated in the early stages. However, incidence and mortality of CRC has increased over the last two decades. The reason could be ...

Memristive biosensors have been proved as excellent candidates for ultrasensitive biosensing. In this work, a novel portable bio-detection system based on memristive biosensors is designed, developed and tested for providing a significantly fast, automatic ...

Introduction: Many studies have shown that electrostimulation of the cavernosal nerve can induce and maintain penile erection. Based on these discoveries, neurostimulation to activate the erectile response has been considered a potential solution to treat ...

Androgen-deprivation therapy is the standard treatment for prostate cancer. Despite the initial response, a fraction of cases manifest progression to castration-resistant prostate cancer. PCa recurrence is possibly due to androgen-independent cancer stem c ...
