Hand gestures are one of the most natural and expressive way for humans to convey information, and thus hand gesture recognition has become a research hotspot in the human-machine interface (HMI) field. In particular, biological signals such as surface ele ...

With the recent advent of blockchains, we have witnessed a plethora of blockchain proposals. These proposals range from using work to using time, storage or stake in order to select blocks to be appended to the chain. As a drawback it makes it difficult fo ...

In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

We study some linear and nonlinear shot noise models where the jumps are drawn from a compound Poisson process with jump sizes following an Erlang-m distribution. We show that the associated Master equation can be written as a spatial mth order partial dif ...

We investigate a non-Markovian analogue of the Harris contact process in Z(d): an individual is attached to each site x is an element of Z(d), and it can be infected or healthy; the infection propagates to healthy neighbours just as in the usual contact pr ...

We introduce a new class of succinct arguments, that we call elastic. Elastic SNARKs allow the prover to allocate different resources (such as memory and time) depending on the execution environment and the statement to prove. The resulting output is indep ...

Consider a stream of status updates generated by a source, where each update is of one of two types: priority or ordinary; these updates are to be transmitted through a network to a monitor. We analyze a transmission policy that treats updates depending on ...

Chemical engineering as a skilled profession depends on the competencies of the individuals practicing it. Formal teaching of chemical engineering at universities only started in the 19th century. Informally, the subject has been in existence at least sinc ...

Vision is an extraordinary sense through which we can appreciate the beauty of the world we live in, gain invaluable knowledge and communicate with others using visual expression and arts. On the contrary, blindness is a threatening medical condition disru ...

This paper addresses the mean-field behavior of large-scale systems of parallel servers with a processor sharing service discipline when arrivals are Poisson and jobs have general service time distributions when an SQ(d) routing policy is used. Under this ...

Current research of designing prosthetic robotic hands mainly focuses on improving their functionality by devising new mechanical structures and actuation systems. Most of existing work relies on a single structure/system (e.g., bone-only or tissue-only) a ...

There is sustained and widespread interest in understanding the limit, if there is any, to the human life span. Apart from its intrinsic and biological interest, changes in survival in old age have implications for the sustainability of social security sys ...

We consider a source that collects a multiplicity of streams of updates and sends them through a network to a monitor. However, only a single update can be in the system at a time. Therefore, the transmitter always preempts the packet being served when a n ...

Dampers are devices that reduce delay jitter in the context of time-sensitive networks, by delaying packets for the amount written in packet headers. Jitter reduction is required by some real-time applications; beyond this, dampers have the potential to so ...

We study stationary max-stable processes {n(t): t is an element of R} admitting a representation of the form n(t) = max(i is an element of N) (U-i +Y-i(t)), where Sigma(infinity)(i=1) delta U-i is a Poisson point process on R with intensity e(-u)du, and Y1 ...

We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for stochastic invariance of finite dimensional submanifolds with boundary in Hilbert spaces for stochastic partial differential equations driven by Wiener processes and Poisson random measures. ...

Many classical Computer Vision problems, such as essential matrix computation and pose estimation from 3D to 2D correspondences, can be tackled by solving a linear least-square problem, which can be done by finding the eigenvector corresponding to the smal ...

Consider a random regular graph with degree d and of size n. Assign to each edge an independent and identically distributed exponential random variable with mean one. In this paper we establish a precise asymptotic expression for the maximum number of edge ...

Internet of Things (IoT) provides more and more adequate infrastructures for many applications and advanced services. This context promotes the ability to satisfy the growing demand for innovative measuring systems, increasingly popular with intelligent no ...

The conventional wisdom is that aggressive networking requirements, such as high packet rates for small messages and microsecond-scale tail latency, are best addressed outside the kernel, in a user-level networking stack. We present IX, a dataplane operati ...
