Modern integrated circuits are tiny yet incredibly complex technological artifacts, composed of millions and billions of individual structures working in unison. Managing their complexity and facilitating their design drove part of the co-evolution of mode ...

Entanglement forging based variational algorithms leverage the bipartition of quantum systems for addressing ground-state problems. The primary limitation of these approaches lies in the exponential summation required over the numerous potential basis stat ...

Humans are chronically exposed to airborne microplastics (MPs) by inhalation. Various types of polymer particles have been detected in lung samples, which could pose a threat to human health. Inhalation toxicological studies are crucial for assessing the e ...

This training dataset includes a total of 34,913 manually transcribed text segments. It is dedicated to the handwritten text recognition (HTR) of historical sources, typically tabular records, such as censuses. This dataset is based on a sample of 83 pages ...

According to physicalism, everything is physical or metaphysically connected to the physical. If physicalism were true, it seems that we should - in principle - be able to reduce the descriptions and explanations of special sciences to physical ones, for e ...

The SALUTE project aims at evaluating performance of electroacoustic metasurface, employing a surface array of controlled electroacoustic actuators, for smart acoustic lining under grazing turbulent flow to be used in UHBR Technologies Engines. Theoretical ...

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), as the assistance of speech communication between pilots and air-traffic controllers, can significantly reduce the complexity of the task and increase the reliability of transmitted information. ASR application can lead ...

The application of digital technologies to historical newspapers has changed the research landscape historians were used to. An Eldorado? Despite undeniable advantages, the new digital affordance of historical newspapers also transforms research practices ...

Artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms have become ubiquitous. Although they offer a wide range of benefits, their adoption in decision-critical fields is limited by their lack of interpretability, particularly with textual data. Moreover, ...

An automatic seizure detection method from high-resolution intracranial-EEG (iEEG) signals is presented to minimize the computational complexity and realize real-time accurate seizure detection for biomedical implants. Complex signal processing on a large ...

We describe a series of algorithms that efficiently implement Gaussian model-X knockoffs to control the false discovery rate on large-scale feature selection problems. Identifying the knockoff distribution requires solving a large-scale semidefinite progra ...

In this work, we investigate if the wav2vec 2.0 self-supervised pretraining helps mitigate the overfitting issues with connectionist temporal classification (CTC) training to reduce its performance gap with flat-start lattice-free MMI (E2E-LFMMI) for autom ...

This paper reports on the computation of a discrete logarithm in the finite field F-230750, breaking by a large margin the previous record, which was set in January 2014 by a computation in F-29234. The present computation made essential use of the elimina ...

The complexity of many-body quantum wave functions is a central aspect of several fields of physics and chemistry where nonperturbative interactions are prominent. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have proven to be a flexible tool to approximate quantum m ...

Background Significant efforts have been made in building large-scale kinetic models of cellular metabolism in the past two decades. However, most kinetic models published to date, remain focused around central carbon pathways or are built around ad hoc re ...

The Rhône River, second largest in Switzerland, has already been corrected twice (1863-1893; 1930-1960) to ensure safety and economic development in the Rhône valley. However, in October 2000, the highest flood of the century occurred showing the limitatio ...

Centralized and cloud computing-based network architectures are the promising tracks of future communication systems where a large scale compute power can be virtualized for various algorithms. These architectures rely on high-performance communication lin ...

Policymaking is a complex process that has been studied using policy process theories almost exclusively. These theories have been built using a large number of qualitative cases. Such methods are useful for theory building but remain limited for theory ex ...

Humor recognition has been widely studied as a text classification problem using data-driven approaches. However, most existing work does not examine the actual joke mechanism to understand humor. We break down any joke into two distinct components: the se ...

Human vision has evolved to make sense of a world in which elements almost never appear in isolation. Surprisingly, the recognition of an element in a visual scene is strongly limited by the presence of other nearby elements, a phenomenon known as visual c ...
