Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) encephalopathy (HIE) in term newborns is a leading cause of mortality and chronic disability. Hypothermia (HT) is the only clinically available therapeutic intervention; however, its neuroprotective effects are limited. Lacto ...

Background: Small-vessel disease (SVD) plays a crucial role in cardiac and brain ischemia, but little is known about potential interrelation between both. We retrospectively evaluated 370 patients, aiming at assessing the interrelation between cardiac and ...

Understanding the mechanisms that enable cancer cells to metastasize is essential in preventing cancer progression. Here we examine the metabolic adaptations of metastasis-initiating cells (MICs) in female breast cancer and how those shape their metastatic ...

The severe social and economic burden of stroke is a strong motivation for the exploration of innovative medical approaches. In this context, magnetic resonance (MR) of hyperpolarized (HP) molecular agents via dissolution dynamic nuclear polarization (dDNP ...

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in cardiac energy metabolism occur in heart failure (HF) and contribute to contractile dysfunction, but their role, if any, in HF-related pathologic remodeling is much less established. CK (creatine kinase), the primary muscle ene ...

Brain lesions caused by cerebral ischemia lead to network disturbances in both hemispheres, causing a subsequent reorganization of functional connectivity both locally and remotely with respect to the injury. Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) meth ...

This thesis is composed of four studies centered on investigating cerebral metabolism using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) of hyperpolarized and non-hyperpolarized compounds at ultra-high field. In the first two chapters, we studied longitudinally t ...

Cerebral metabolism, which can be monitored by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), changes rapidly after brain ischaemic injury. Hyperpolarisation techniques boost (13)C MRS sensitivity by several orders of magnitude, thereby enabling in vivo monitoring ...

Physiological evidence suggests that neighboring brain regions have similar perfusion characteristics (vascular supply, collateral blood flow). It is largely unknown whether integrating perfusion CT (pCT) information from the area surrounding a given voxel ...

Aim Arginase 2 (ARG2) is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyses hydrolysis ofl-arginine into urea andl-ornithine. In the kidney, ARG2 is localized to the S3 segment of the proximal tubule. It has been shown that expression and activity of this enzyme are up ...

We report an oxidative ring-opening strategy to transform acyl, sulfonyl or carbamate protected aminocyclopropanes into 1,3-dielectrophilic carbon intermediates bearing a halide atom (Br, I) and a N,O-acetal. Replacing the alkoxy group of the N,O-acetal ca ...

PURPOSE: Dipole antennas that provide high transmit field penetration with large coverage, and their use in a parallel transmit setup, may be advantageous in minimizing B 1+ -field inhomogeneities at ultra-high field, i.e 7T. We have developed and evaluate ...

Many computational models for analyzing and predicting cell physiology rely on in vitro data collected in dilute and controlled buffer solutions. However, this can mislead models because up to 40% of the intracellular volume-depending on the organism, the ...

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is recognized as a metabolic disease, characterized by acute cerebral glucose hypo-metabolism. Adaptive metabolic responses to TBI involve the utilization of alternative energy substrates, such as ketone bodies. Cer ...

Microvascular dysfunction and resulting tissue hypoxia is a major contributor to the pathogenesis and evolution of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Diverse gene and cell therapies have been proposed to preserve the microvasculature or boost angiogenesis in C ...

Objectives: Lactate promotes cerebral blood flow and is an efficient substrate for the brain, particularly at times of glucose shortage. Hypertonic lactate is neuroprotective after experimental brain injury; however, human data are limited. ...

The dynamics of L-lactate transport across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and its cerebral metabolism are still subject to debate. We studied lactate uptake and intracellular metabolism in the mouse brain using hyperpolarized C-13 magnetic resonance spectro ...

Neuroimaging techniques aim at revealing the anatomy and functional organisation of cerebral structures. Over the past decades, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has revolutionized our understanding of human cerebral physiology through its abili ...

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) is a fatal hypomyelinating disorder characterized by early impairment of motor development, nystagmus, choreoathetotic movements, ataxia and progressive spasticity. PMD is caused by variations in the proteolipid protein g ...

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a powerful tool when studying metabolism in intact and living organs preserving cells in their natural microenvironment with minimal external interference. The unique insights offered by the observation of metabolic ...
