Patterns in nature arise from processes interacting across a continuum of spatial scales, where new relationships emerge at each level of investigation. These patterns are nested features encompassing fine-scale local patterns, such as topography and geolo ...

Additive Manufacturing also commonly referred as 3D printing has been given a lot of interest lately. Market is growing exponentially and the aim for obtaining more complex and ready-to use parts is emerging. All the 3D printing processes consist in buildi ...

Precise packaging of nanoliter amounts of liquid in a microsystem is important for many biomedical applications. However, existing liquid encapsulation technologies have limitations in terms of liquid waste, evaporation, trapped bubbles, and liquid degrada ...

3D printing is a powerful manufacturing technology for shaping materials into complex structures. While the palette of printable materials continues to expand, the rheological and chemical requisites for printing are not always easy to fulfill. Here, a uni ...

Near-surface wind is difficult to estimate using global numerical weather and climate models, because airflow is strongly modified by underlying topography, especially that of a country such as Switzerland. In this article, we use a statistical approach ba ...

Additive manufacturing (AM) processes such as material extrusion and vat photopolymerization all require supports to print parts with overhang features. These additional supports using the same or different materials are a waste of materials since they nee ...

The present invention concerns a layer or substrate flattening method comprising the steps of: - providing a layer or substrate (1) to be flattened; - measuring a topography or surface profile of at least one area (3) of the layer or substrate to be flatte ...

We present a systematic non-invasive investigation of a large corpus of early printed books, exploiting multiple techniques. This work is part of a broader project -- Argeia -- aiming to study early printing technologies, their evolution and, potentially, ...

Printing industry and printing techniques are increasing its market value by new methodologies. The resolution and accuracy of the pattern transfer is always a challenge for the industry, especially for the proximity printing industries which use mask alig ...

Moiré effects result from the superimposition of repetitive structures. The beauty of these moirés comes from the fact that macroscopic shapes seem to appear from the superposition of layers containing microscopic patterns. In addition, the moirés are dyna ...

We introduce an image reproduction model that retargets colors for printing purposes to ensure similar luminance perception under photopic and scotopic vision. Our model is based on the physiological functioning of the rod and cone cells in the retina in v ...

Bioelectronic and neuroprosthetic interfaces rely on implanted microelectrode arrays (MEAs) to interact with the human body. Printing techniques, such as inkjet and screen printing, are attractive methods for the manufacturing of MEAs because they allow fl ...

Two superposed layers of transparent cylindrical lenslet gratings create classical moiré fringes when illuminated from behind. We rely on this observation to conceive special devices made of superposed lenslet gratings that produce compelling beating shape ...

We propose new methods for creating color varying prints with classical cyan, magenta, yellow inks on a metallic specularly reflecting or on a white diffusely reflecting substrate. We use a special cross-line halftone with optimized surface coverages of th ...

Printing on a flat metallic substrate has gained popularity in recent years. The reflection of light on a specularly reflecting metallic substrate differs strongly from the reflection of light on a diffusely reflecting medium such as paper. Direct prints o ...

Purpose MP2RAGE T-1-weighted imaging has been shown to be beneficial for various applications, mainly because of its good grey-white matter contrast, its B-1-robustness and ability to derive T(1)maps. Even using parallel imaging, the method requires long a ...

Fluorine-19 (F-19) MRI of injected perfluorocarbon emulsions (PFCs) allows for the non-invasive quantification of inflammation and cell tracking, but suffers from a low signal-to-noise ratio and extended scan time. To address this limitation, we tested the ...

We propose new methods for creating color or achromatic images that are printed with classical cyan, magenta, yellow and a white diffusing ink on a metallic substrate. We optimize the surface coverages of the cyan, magenta, yellow and white inks in order t ...

The present invention aims at providing a method to produce modified images of a human face while removing all defects, such as such as pigmentation irregularities (e.g., moles, freckles), irritation, roughness, or wrinkles This is achieved thanks to a met ...

Inspired from additive manufacturing's success, the structuring of biocompatible materials through bioprinting has become a growing field of research in the past fifteen years. It opened the door to a plethora of applications ranging from the fabrication o ...
