Metal plasticity is an inherently multiscale phenomenon due to the complex long-range field of atomistic dislocations that are the primary mechanism for plastic deformation in metals. Atomistic/Continuum (A/C) coupling methods are computationally efficient ...

Understanding how things break and slide is of paramount importance to describe the dynamics of a broad range of physical systems. This includes day-to-day problems such as the breaking of a glass of wine or the sliding of skis on snow, but also engineerin ...

This paper reviews the state of the art and discusses recent developments in the field of adaptive isogeometric analysis, with special focus on the mathematical theory. This includes an overview of available spline technologies for the local resolution of ...

A warping-inclusive kinematic coupling method to be used in finite-element analysis of members featuring wide-flange cross sections is proposed in this paper. This coupling method is used in mixed-dimension macromodels that combine continuum and beam-colum ...

This paper deals with a new analytical model for microfluidic passive mixers. Two common approaches already exist for such a purpose. On the one hand, the resolution of the advection-diffusion-reaction equation (ADRE) is the first one and the closest to ph ...

High-order numerical solvers for conservation laws suffer from Gibbs phenomenon close to discontinuities, leading to spurious oscillations and a detrimental effect on the solution accuracy. A possible strategy to reduce it comprises adding a suitable amoun ...

An open accelerator (OpenACC)-aided graphics processing unit (GPU)-based finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is presented for the first time for the 3D evaluation of lightning radiated electromagnetic fields along a complex terrain with arbitrary t ...

In the present paper, a multi-step reconstruction procedure is proposed for high order finite volume schemes on unstructured grids using compact stencil. The procedure is a recursive algorithm that can eventually provide sufficient relations for high order ...

The finite-difference time-domain method is one of the most widely used numerical electromagnetic computation techniques, and it has become an effective tool for analyzing electromagnetic transient phenomena in three-dimensional structures and grounding sy ...

Far-field dot pattern generation is analyzed for a Gaussian beam source that illuminates a sinusoidal phase grating which is placed at a certain distance behind the beam waist. We obtain a bigger field of view with more numbers of points using a Gaussian b ...

We consider Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) for the numerical solution of the electrophysiology of the atria, which in this work is modeled by means of the bidomain equations on thin surfaces. First, we consider the bidomain equations coupled with the Roger-Mc ...

We describe some recent developments in the efficient modelling of light-matter interactions in plasmonics and nanophotonics. In particular, we describe an efficient finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to compute regularized quasinormal modes in re ...

Adaptive numerical method algorithms are presented for the numerical simulation of the hysteretic behaviour of nonlinear viscous and bilinear oil dampers within a finite element program for nonlinear dynamic analysis of frame structures under earthquake ex ...

In this thesis, a computational approach is used to study two-phase flow including phase change by direct numerical simulation. This approach follows the interface with an adaptive moving mesh. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved, in tw ...

Atomistic/continuum (A/C) coupling schemes have been developed during the past twenty years to overcome the vast computational cost of fully atomistic models, but have not yet reached full maturity to address many problems of practical interest. This work ...

This paper deals with fast simulations of the hemodynamics in large arteries by considering a reduced model of the associated fluid-structure interaction problem, which in turn allows an additional reduction in terms of the numerical discretisation. The re ...

The paperpresents a comprehensive approach for full-wave modeling of grounding systems buried in a multilayer stratified ground. The dyadic spectral domain Green's function associated with the multilayer stratified ground is first derived. This Green's fun ...

A new multiscale coupling method is proposed for elliptic problems with highly oscillatory coefficients with a continuum of scales in a subset of the computational domain and scale separation in complementary regions of the computational domain. A disconti ...

Multiscale or multiphysics partial differential equations are used to model a wide range of physical systems with various applications, e.g. from material and natural science to problems in biology or engineering. When the ratio between the smallest scale ...
