We propose a simulation-based decision strategy for the proactive maintenance of complex structures with a particular application to structural health monitoring (SHM). The strategy is based on a data-driven approach which exploits an offline-online decomp ...

Objective:The cochlear nucleus (CN) is the target of the auditory brainstem implant (ABI). Most ABI candidates have Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and distorted brainstem anatomy from bilateral vestibular schwannomas. The CN is difficult to characterize as ...

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have proven to be a robust power source for efficiently converting environmental mechanical energy into electricity. Triboelectric technology experienced substantial growth in the past few years, especially in the field ...

The objective of this thesis is to provide a mathematical and computational framework for the proactive maintenance of complex systems with a particular application to structural health monitoring (SHM). SHM techniques rely primarily on sensor responses to ...

Five-membered nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (azoles) belong to potential moieties in complex structures where transformations during ozonation can occur. This study focused on the azole-ozone chemistry of pyrrole, imidazole, and pyrazole as mo ...

Gait and balance deficits are motor disabilities that typically develop late in the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). These deficits are thought to be the result of dysregulated neural activity in the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamic-cortical motor lo ...

The cerebellum is best known for its role in controlling motor behaviors. However, recent work supports the view that it also influences non-motor behaviors. The contribution of the cerebellum towards different brain functions is underscored by its involve ...

Systemic hypoxia-ischemia (HI) often occurs during preterm birth in human. HI induces injuries to hinder brain cells mainly in the ipsilateral forebrain structures. Such HI injuries may cause lifelong disturbances in the distant regions, such as the contra ...

Background:The usability of dexterous hand prostheses is still hampered by the lack of natural and effective control strategies. A decoding strategy based on the process-ing of descending efferent neural signals recorded using peripheral neural interfaces ...

Self-reconfiguration is a hard problem due to the high dimensionality of self-reconfigurable modular systems. Searchbased approaches offer complete and optimal solutions. However, naive search algorithms cannot directly solve self-reconfiguration tasks in ...

In this study, we apply interferometric microscopy to study the phase, alongside the intensity, of the light field transmitted through a wide variety of samples. Additionally, we conduct those interferometric measurements at different wavelengths within th ...

Faults in the brittle crust constitute preexisting weakness zones that can be reactivated depending on their friction, orientation within the local stress field, and stress field magnitude. Analytical approaches to evaluate the potential for fault reactiva ...

Although having a relatively homogeneous cytoarchitectonic organization, the cerebellar cortex is a heterogeneous region characterized by different amounts of myelin, iron and protein expression profiles. In this study, we used quantitative T1 and T2* mapp ...
