We demonstrate a figure-of-9 all-fiber thulium-doped laser (TDFL) that generates 560 fs long pulses at 1948 nm wavelength. In order to achieve self-starting passive mode-locking, we utilize an in-fiber Faraday rotator to induce a nonreciprocal phase shift. ...

We report on the commissioning results of the cold neutron multiplexing secondary spectrometer CAMEA (Continuous Angle Multi -Energy Analysis) at the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source at the Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland. CAMEA is optimized for efficie ...

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a subset of metal-organic frameworks with more than 200 characterized crystalline and amorphous networks made of divalent transition metal centres (for example, Zn2+ and Co2+) linked by imidazolate linkers. ZIF th ...

The invention relates to a Method for operating a frequency agile tunable self-injection locking laser system being formed by a laser device coupled to at least one optical resonator, wherein a diode current of a laser diode of the laser device is controll ...

Combining optical gain in direct-bandgap III-V materials with tunable optical feedback offered by advanced photonic integrated circuits is key to chip-scale external-cavity lasers (ECL), offering wideband tunability along with low optical linewidths. Exter ...

Cavities concentrate light and enhance its interaction with matter. Confining to microscopic volumes is necessary for many applications but space constraints in such cavities limit the design freedom. Here we demonstrate stable optical microcavities by cou ...

Nonradiative recombination in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells has long been attributed to the antisite defects MCu (M = In, Ga), but the underlying mechanism is still elusive. Using rigorous first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the antisites ...

Ring resonators have proven to be extremely successful for generation of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons, but their dispersion engineering is limited. We present a photonic-crystal Fabry-Perot resonator with record-high quality factors in gallium phosph ...

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are the subject of massive interest due to the range of applications they can provide at a huge scale while building on well-established CMOS technologies. One of the critical parameters defining a technology's maturity ...

We study a gravity-driven viscous flow coating a vertical cylindrical fibre. The destabilisation of a draining liquid column into a downward moving train of beads has been linked to the conjunction of the Rayleigh-Plateau and Kapitza instabilities in the l ...

The past decade has witnessed major advances in the development and system-level applications of photonic integrated microcombs, that are coherent, broadband optical frequency combs with repetition rates in the millimeter-wave to terahertz domain. Most of ...

The European fusion research activities have, over recent decades, generated a vast and varied set of data. The volume and diversity of the data that need to be catalogued and annotated make the task of organising and making the data available within a bro ...

We report on a practical method for developing InGaN-based edge emitting laser diodes of cavity length down to 45 mu m. Samples consisting of one uncoated cleaved facet and one etched facet coated with a high-reflectivity (HR) dielectric distributed Bragg ...

This manuscript reports on the application of copper thermal spraying in the manufacturing process of an electrical connection between Nb3Sn cables for superconducting magnets of fusion reactors. The joint is realized through diffusion bonding of the spray ...

Microcombs provide a path to broad-bandwidth integrated frequency combs with low power consumption, which are compatible with wafer-scale fabrication. Yet, electrically-driven, photonic chip-based microcombs are inhibited by the required high threshold pow ...

This manuscript serves a specific purpose: to give readers from fields such as material science, chemistry, or electronics an overview of implementing a reservoir computing (RC) experiment with her/his material system. Introductory literature on the topic ...

Optical-frequency combs, that is spectra of equidistant coherent optical lines, have revolutionized the precision measurements of time and frequency. In 2007 a new method to generate optical frequency combs was discovered. In contrast to conventional gener ...

Divertor detachment and alternative divertor magnetic geometries are predicted to be promising approaches to handle the power exhaust of future fusion devices. In order to understand the detachment process caused by volumetric losses in alternative diverto ...

Recent developments of self-injection locking of a DFB laser with an ultra-high Q resonator have enabled unprecedented low-noise performance of coherent light sources. We review the demonstration of ultra-narrow linewidth laser and microcombs in integrated ...

We demonstrate via self-injection locking an electrically driven soliton micro-comb by coupling a multi-frequency laser diode to a chip-scale high-Q Si3N4 microresonator. This approach offers a pathway for an integrated and ultra-compact microcomb source f ...
