In the development of implantable bioelectronics, the establishment of efficient wireless RF links between implants and external nodes is crucial, providing substantial contributions to the advancement of medical diagnosis, therapies, and basic science. Im ...

Chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) are synthetic, transmembrane proteins that trigger immune cell signaling following their engagement. They have been first utilized in T cells and later in natural killer (NK) cells to redirect their cytotoxicity toward a s ...

Central nervous system organogenesis is a complex process that obeys precise architectural rules. The impact that nervous system architecture may have on its functionality remains, however, relatively unexplored. To clarify this problem, we analyze the dev ...

In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

With the expanding role of converter-interfaced distributed energy resources, modern power grids are evolving towards low-inertia networks that are increasingly vulnerable to extreme dynamics. Consequently, advanced signal processing techniques are needed ...

Cancer is a leading cause of death in the world, and the mechanisms that underlie this disease are still not completely understood. As cancer develops and progresses, cells undergo a diversity of mutations that sustain their rapid proliferation and the eva ...

Recent advances in signal processing, machine learning and deep learning with sparse intrinsic structure of data have paved the path for solving inverse problems in acoustics and audio. The main task of this thesis was to bridge the gap between the powerfu ...

Author summary Adenylyl cyclases (ACs) are enzymes that can translate extracellular signals into the intracellular molecule cAMP, which is thus a 2nd messenger of extracellular events. The brain expresses nine membrane-bound AC variants, and AC5 is the dom ...

An accurate 16-channel seizure detection system-on-chip is presented, which is based on extracting features from the compressed recorded data using multichannel compressive sensing (MCS). MCS is used to reduce the transmission data rate of sparse biologica ...

Implantable systems are nowadays being used to interface the human brain with external devices, in order to understand and potentially treat neurological disorders. The most predominant design constraints are the system’s area and power. In this paper, we ...

High-throughput sequencing of RNA molecules has enabled the quantitative analysis of gene expression at the expense of storage space and processing power. To alleviate these prob- lems, lossy compression methods of the quality scores associated to RNA sequ ...

New emerging technologies in the field of multimedia, such as high dynamic range and wide color gamut, challenge the performance of existing image and video data processing algorithms, especially in terms of visual data compression and its faithful represe ...

A power and area effcient hardware encoding system tailored for wireless implantable applications is presented. Constant medical monitoring allowed by implantable devices is the most relevant alternative to current bulky monitoring systems, which, in case ...

In the last decade, improvements on technology scaling have enabled the design of a novel generation of wearable bio-sensing monitors. These smart Wireless Body Sensor Nodes (WBSNs) are able to acquire and process biological signals, such as electrocardiog ...

This work presents an area and power efficient encoding system for wireless implantable devices capable of monitoring the electrical activity of the brain. Such devices are becoming an important tool for understanding, real-time monitoring, and potentially ...

The JAK/STAT pathway is a key signaling pathway in the regulation of development and immunity in metazoans. In contrast to the multiple combinatorial JAK/STAT pathways in mammals, only one canonical JAK/STAT pathway exists in Drosophila. It is activated by ...

Ultra-low-power design has been a challenging area for design of the sensor front-ends especially in the area of Wireless Body Sensor Nodes (WBSN), where a limited amount of power budget and hardware resources are available. Since introduction of Compresse ...

Smart and miniaturized implantable microsystems with diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities are becoming increasingly important for patients suffering from neurological disorders such as epilepsy. Recent developments in microfabrication technology have pr ...

Lateral diffusion enables efficient interactions between membrane proteins leading to signal transmission across the plasma membrane. An open question is how the spatio-temporal distribution of cell surface receptors influences the transmembrane signaling ...
