The production of concrete, the most widely used construction material, detrimentally affects the environment. Obsolete reinforced concrete (RC) load-bearing structures, even when still in good condition, are today prematurely crushed and landfilled or rec ...

The digitization of timber construction, the emergence of engineered wood products, and the urgent need to drastically reduce buildings' environmental impact have given a rebirth to wood as a construction material. On the one hand, increasing the use of ti ...

This paper concerns the planning, design, and construction history of a postwar multifamily housing block in Ankara, Turkey, viewed from the perspective of the transnational and local networks behind its realization. Built by the Mintrak Building Cooperati ...

This paper introduces a computational framework that fosters collaboration between architects, engineers, and contractors by bridging the gap between architectural design, structural analysis, and digital construction. The present research is oriented towa ...

With the increasing use of automation and computer-aided manufacturing in timber construction, a standardized timber construction system using digitally produced wood-wood connections has recently been developed for basic building components. Its structura ...

The immediate application of research discoveries requires a global and exact understanding of the structure under consideration. To gain insight into the complex behavior of structures, numerical simulations are carried out in parallel to physical experim ...

The construction industry’s contribution to the deterioration of Earth’s ecosystem is huge. 11% of all anthropic greenhouse gas emissions worldwide are due to the construction, demolition, and transformation of buildings and infrastructure. Construction an ...

Traditional wood-wood connections, widely used in the past, have been progressively replaced by steel fasteners and bonding processes in modern timber constructions. However, the emergence of digital fabrication and innovative engineered timber products ha ...

The rise of digital fabrication has increased the use of wood-wood connections inspired by traditional carpentry in modern timber constructions. With recent developments on standard construction systems, the mechanical behavior of such joints for in-plane ...

Reuse reduces raw material use, waste generation and energy consumption caused by building construction. A substantial share of these impacts is contributed by load-bearing systems be-cause of their mass- and energy-intensive production process. Therefore, ...

This paper presents structural optimization techniques to design truss structures that make best use of a given stock of structural components. Still little explored, the reuse of structural components over multiple service lives has the potential to signi ...

Timber construction plays an important role in architectural history, in modern construction methods and in sustainable design, for which wood-only joinery techniques have been used for centuries. Traditional joinery typologies are the product of successiv ...

Aging bridges of the German federal road network often cannot be rehabilitated or replaced timely due to insufficient funding and complex regulations of building laws. Consequently, novel building materials and alternative solutions get the opportunity to ...

Structural behaviour of timber folded surface systems greatly depends on the connections ability to transfer the occurring forces between the adjacent elements and finally to the supports. This paper focuses on multiple tab-and-slot joints (MTSJ), where di ...

Most European cities are facing urban densification issues. In this context, a solution to create usable spaces without additional pressure on land consists in the vertical extension of existing buildings. Given their abundance in the building stock, terti ...

This paper proposes the application of optimization techniques to design reticular structures made from a stock of reused elements. Still little explored, the reuse of structural components over multiple service lives has the potential to reduce the enviro ...

In structural engineering, folded surface structures present one of the concepts for construction of self supporting column free systems. They utilize structural benefits of folding to achieve material saving and improve structural efficiency. The folding ...

Looking back at the history of concrete houses around 1900, we can discover how reinforced concrete, initially tied to construction systems of renowned inventors (and other less known), is gradually becoming autonomous and a material on its own, highlighte ...

The use of thin reinforced concrete walls (thickness of 8 to 12 cm) in Latin America has become a popular building construction practice in the last two decades. Several existing studies indicate that the inelastic deformation capacity could be limited and ...

The structural behavior of GFRP-polyurethane (PUR) web-core sandwich structures subjected to sustained loading was investigated. As a basis, a study of the mechanical behavior of rigid PUR foams used as core materials was conducted, with emphasis on creep. ...
