The subject of the article is the history of popular and authoritative series of St. Petersburg publishing house “Obrazovanie” (1909-1928), which on the eve of the First World War played an important role in Russia in the restructuring of key disciplines o ...

Computer simulations are often used as support material for science education, as they can engage students through inquiry-based learning, promote their active interaction in the experimentation phase, and help them visualize abstract concepts. For instanc ...

Anthropogenic modification of natural landscapes to urban environments impacts land-atmosphere interactions in the boundary layer. Ample research has demonstrated the effect of such landscape transitions on development of the urban heat island (UHI), but c ...

The desire and ability to place AI-enabled applications on the edge has grown significantly in recent years. However, the compute-, area-, and power-constrained nature of edge devices are stressed by the needs of the AI-enabled applications, due to a gener ...

Over the course of history, the relationship between cities and their waters has shown different gradients of interweaving, marked by cycles of bonding and distancing. Following a period of complete neglect of urban watercourses, the versatile, multifacete ...

Zoning reform is a crucial tool for cities to adapt to contemporary challenges. However, its implementation remains challenging. Property owners, with a vested interest in the value of their neighborhoods, are sensitive to local developments and the potent ...

This thesis focuses on English invention drawings between 1750 and 1850. These visual documents offer a perspective on a technical aesthetic linked to the rise of English machinery at the turn of the 19th century. In this work, I focus on two specific corp ...

Evaluating visual landscape quality provides valuable information for urban development and spatial planning. In practice however, obtaining high resolution view-metrics and outcome data with sufficient geographic coverage has remained challenging. To over ...

Historical centers of Europe and Croatia are often formed by unreinforced masonry building aggregates that developed as the layout of the city or village was densified. In these aggregates, adjacent buildings can share structural walls with an older and a ...

Functional materials that enable many technological applications in our everyday lives owe their unique properties to defects that are carefully engineered and incorporated into these materials during processing. However, optimizing and characterizing thes ...

By the end of the 19th century, an international order had emerged for patents, allowing business actors to use patents in many countries concurrently, and thus supporting a new phase in the development of industrial capitalism. Centered on Europe in spite ...

Participation in the context of urban planning is growing in the urban and architectural processes of democratic cities. Urban co-creation means working with communities by integrating their needs, giving them the opportunity to collaborate in the transfor ...

This article explores the conception, design, and implementation of a hypertextual map that we call hypermap. Using Giovanni Nolli's 1748 map of the city of Rome as a backbone, we conducted an experiment based on one of the routes defined by Giuseppe Vasi' ...

While migration is intrinsically linked to the arrival to the city, the city is also shaped by migration. It is an in-between space, between "territory" and "home", the border and shelter. However, "urban" hospitality remains a concept that needs to be exp ...

In this article, we consider the role of landscape as support for an alternative urban mobility scheme and how architecture can help foster a transition towards a low-carbon system. From that point of departure, we trace the genealogical origins of the ter ...

Accurately predicting weather and climate in cities is critical for safeguarding human health and strengthening urban resilience. Multimodel evaluations can lead to model improvements; however, there have been no major intercomparisons of urban-focussed la ...

Region extraction is a very common task in both Computer Science and Engineering with several applications in object recognition and motion analysis, among others. Most of the literature focuses on regions delimited by straight lines, often in the special ...

A method of manufacturing a fibre comprising a lined channel, using a draw apparatus, the method comprising: providing a preform, comprising a channel extending through the preform, to the draw apparatus; feeding a liner into the channel; heating a portion ...

How can one construct spatial histories and architectural theories from gestures, words and voices, bodies and minor threads? This research delves into oral and embodied architectural and spatial knowledge as modes of producing buildings, spaces and spati ...

The SERA project AIMS (Seismic Testing of Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structures) comprised a blind prediction competition related to a shake-table test of an aggregate of two buildings under two horizontal components of dynamic excitation. Each group was ...
