Hybrid physical vapour/atomic layer deposition technology has enabled the formation of nanolaminated Al100−z Ni z /AlO x H y (bilayer period: 25/1 nm, z = 0, 2, and 5 at.%) thin films, introducing a novel interface-engineered design strategy with advanced microstructure control. This leverages dual-route tailoring of nanocrystalline Al through 1) compositional grain boundary engineering (Al100−z Ni z) and 2) well-defined crystalline / amorphous interfaces (Al100−z Ni z /AlO x H y). As ambient plasticity is

Precise control of temperature fields at the micro‐ and nanoscale is essential for emerging applications in nanophotonics, catalysis, and microfluidics, yet remains difficult due to the diffusive nature of heat. While inverse‐design algorithms have advanced thermoplasmonic metasurfaces, their extension to all‐dielectric systems has not been explored. Here, an inverse thermal design framework is introduced for dielectric metasurfaces composed of thermo‐optical amorphous silicon (a‐Si) nanoresonators. By leve

The rapid growth of edge computing, wearable electronics, and Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications is driving demand for microsystems that can locally perform data processing, storage, and intelligent decision-making. These systems must be compact, energy-efficient, and capable of integrating multiple functions within strict area and power constraints . Conventional architectures that physically separate energy storage, memory, and logic increasingly face limitations in footprint, latency, and efficiency.

This semester project investigates the influence of metal layer thickness on an acoustic resonator. The resonator is a 14x17 mm chip made up of four layers as shown in Figure 1, each with an essential role to play. Silicon (Si) forms the substrate, providing a stable mechanical base compatible with microelectronic technologies. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) acts as an insulating layer, limiting the loss of acoustic energy to the substrate while promoting good wave propagation. Y-cut lithium niobate (LiNBO3), a pie

Mini-module aging tests with differently interconnected heterojunction solar cells having industrially viable copper metallization are presented. The plating process comprises 3 steps: firstly, screen printing of a seed-grid layout using a copper-based paste, followed by deposition of a dielectric layer over the entire wafer surface, and finally, selective copper electrodeposition on grid positions. Modules with Smartwire interconnection, fabricated with M6 half-cells, are stable in extended TC and PID test

High reflectivity is essential when a metal is used as back contact and reflector in thin-film silicon solar cells. We show that thermal annealing at 150 °C improves the reflectivity of silver films deposited by sputtering at room temperature on nanotextured substrates. The annealing provokes two interlinked effects: rearrangement of the silver layer with a modification of its morphology and an increase of up to 42% in the grain size of the polycrystalline film for the preferential orientation as measured b

A new approach to reduce phosphorous contamination in the intrinsic layer during the deposition of amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) nip solar cells prepared in single-chamber reactors is presented. This novel process consists of a hydrogen etching plasma performed after the n-layer deposition, which prevents a recycling of phosphorous from the reactor walls when exposed to a hydrogen-rich plasma during the subsequent i-layer deposition. The implemented process reduces the phosphorous cross-contamination in the i-

The present review on light emission stimulated by electrons tunneling inelastically through a junction formed by a sample and a tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) focusses on the most relevant results obtained for a variety of systems, including metal surfaces, single molecules on ultrathin dielectric films, and molecules assembled in thin films or in nanostructures on metal surfaces or on dielectric films. The decisive role of the localized surface plasmon for the enhanced luminescence from supp

Commercial glass frits (lead borosilicate glasses) were employed as the sintering aids to reduce the sintering temperatures of BST ceramics. The effects of the glass content and the sintering temperature on the microstructures, dielectric properties and tunabilities of BST ceramics have been investigated. Densification of BST ceramics of 5 wt% glass content becomes significant from sintering temperature of 1000 degrees C. The glass content shows a strong influence on the Curie temperature T-c permittivity a

In this paper we report the fabrication and detailed electrical characterization of a Metal-Ferroelectric-Oxide-Semiconductor Capacitor aiming at the extraction of the polarization characteristic. In order to evaluate the electrical performances of the ferroelectric over SiO2 capacitor, we propose a simple device test structure featuring an intermediate contact between the two insulators. The investigated test structures are fabricated on highly doped silicon with a gate stack including 40nm silicon dioxide

Process optimization and properties of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films for piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (pMUTs) for scanning probe devices will be presented. The goal of the work was a replacement of the tetragenic and mutagenic solvent and a decrease of time-consuming PZT 2-methoxy ethanol (2MOE) route. An alternative diol-based solution synthesis process was developed and "Design Of Experiment" (DOE) was used to achieve processing optimization for thick and crack free films. Tigh

Recently, high-strength zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramic substrates have attracted interest, because they offer much improved mechanical properties over straight alumina, while maintaining advantages such as good thermal conductivity and chemical stability. This allows their application in high-power electronics and piezoresistive thick-film sensors, where the substrate is subjected to considerable stress. This work examines the impact of processing a range of thick film materials (Ag- and Au-based

Growth and properties of sputter in situ sputter deposited Pb(Z,Ti)O-3 (PZT) thin films have been studied on (111)-textured Pt electrodes as a function of seed layers of the type (TiO2)(x)(PbO)(y). The PZT process was run with a limited lead excess resulting in pyrochlore nucleation on bare Pt electrodes. When the electrode was covered with a dense seed layer, perovskite was obtained everywhere. Ti rich seed layers yielded (111)-textured PZT even for very thin seed layers. Pb rich seed layers nucleated as P

This thesis analyzes the properties of heavily doped nanocrystalline titanium dioxide. Thin films were deposited by magnetron sputtering with either water vapor as reactive gas or a periodically interrupted oxygen supply. The samples were at the same time electrically conducting and transparent. They consisted of mixtures of rutile, anatase and amorphous phases. Titanium dioxide is chemically stable, hard, non-toxic, transparent, and inexpensive. Due to a high refractive index it is often found in optical a

The piezoresistive effect of thick-film resistors has found widespread application in pressure and force sensors due to their high strain-sensitivity, stability and low-cost. The main material requirements for these applications are a high piezoresistive response, low noise and low temperature dependence. However, many useful elastic substrate materials are degraded at the standard thick-film processing temperature of 850 °C, and therefore require a lower one. This is achieved by engineering the glass compo

A tape casting co-sintering route is described in which thin dense layers of LaSrFeCoO3 (LSFC) have been formed on planar, porous MgO substrates 100- 200 micron thick. SEM analysis of the sintered structure showed that it was possible to eliminate most of the residual porosity in the LSFC layer, but maintain a porosity between 25 and 45% in the MgO support layer. The LSFC layer dit not reveal many cracks. The overall shrinkage of the co-sintered structure was about 25%. The LSFC layer topography was smooth

Pb(Zr-x, Ti1-x)O-3 (PZT) piezoelectric thin films are of major interest in MEMS technology for their ability to provide electro-mechanical coupling. In this work, the effective transverse piezoelectric coefficient e(31,f) of sol-gel processed films was investigated as a function of composition, film texture and film thickness. Dense, textured and crack-free PZT films have been obtained on silicon substrates up to a thickness of 4 mum. Crystallization anneals have been performed for every 0.25 mum. Nucleatio

Using a density-functional approach, we study the dielectric permittivity across interfaces at the atomic scale. Focusing on the static and high-frequency permittivities of SiO2 films on silicon, for oxide thicknesses from 12 Angstrom down to the atomic scale, we find a departure from bulk values in accord with experiment. A classical three-layer model accounts for the calculated permittivities and is supported by the microscopic polarization profile across the interface. The local screening varies on lengt

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a material that belongs to the family of Transparent Conductives Oxides (TCO). Its non-toxicity and the abundant availability in the Earth's crust of its components make it an ideal candidate as electrical transparent contact for thin-film amorphous and/or microcrystalline silicon solar cells. The Low-Pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition (LP-CVD) method allows one to obtain rough ZnO layers, which can effectively scatter the light that passes through them. This high scattering capacity in

The ferroelectric transition of bulk strontium titanate is suppressed by a combination of two effects: (1) the structural changes produced by the antiferrodistortive transition at T-a =105 K and (2) the quantum fluctuations. The structural changes are strongly perturbed within antiphase domain boundaries , and this in such a manner that a ferroelectric transition should occur in boundaries containing the tetragonal c-axis at T-c similar to 35 to 40 K. This provides a possible explanation for a number of ano
