AI agents that interact with the real world through tool calls pose fundamental safety challenges: agents might leak private information, cause unintended side effects, or be manipulated through prompt injection. To address these challenges, we propose to put the agent in a programming-language-based "safety harness": instead of calling tools directly, agents express their intentions as code in a capability-safe language, Scala 3 with capture checking. Capabilities are program variables that regulate access

For many people, the reconciliation of Life with the Second Law of Thermodynamics remains a mystery. This law says that nothing in the universe will happen spontaneously without the generation of entropy. This function measures how many microstates are accessible to the system and may thus be interpreted in a simplified way as disorganization, or “messiness” of the system. The spontaneous increase of messiness may be easy to understand when considering avalanches thundering down mountains, or buildings coll

Type confusion, or bad casting, is a common C++ attack vector. Such vulnerabilities cause a program to interpret an object as belonging to a different type, enabling powerful attacks, like control-flow hijacking. C++ limits runtime checks to polymorphic classes because only those have inline type information. The lack of runtime type information throughout an object’s lifetime makes it challenging to enforce continuous checks and thereby prevent type confusion during downcasting. Current solutions either re

With more than 17,000 users and inhabitants, the EPFL site constitutes a main urban piece of the West-Lausanne (Switzerland) agglomeration. The campus is currently going through a major renovation, including the pedestrianisation of roads to improve the quality and quantity of campus public space. “Avenue Piccard” is one of the cornerstones of the upcoming EPFL campus pedestrianisation, which will involve major changes to the infrastructure. Significant construction work is expected in order to reshape the

Modeling the temporal unfolding of musical events and its interpretation in terms of hierarchical relations is a common theme in music theory, cognition, and composition. To faithfully encode such relations, we need an elegant way to represent both the semantics of prolongation, where a single event is elaborated into multiple events, and process, where the connection from one event to another is elaborated into multiple connections. In existing works, trees are used to capture the former and graphs for the

In the context of the BARREEF project’s artificial reef construction in Samsø, Denmark, this study presents a preliminary baseline assessment of biodiversity and coastal erosion, as well as future predictions. The BARREEF project aims to address the challenges of climate change and other stressors on marine ecosystems through dual objectives of coastal protection and biodiversity enhancement. The methodology includes biodiversity monitoring using unbaited remote underwater video systems (UBRUVS) at three di

The performance of contemporary object oriented languages depends on optimizations such as devirtualization, inlining, and specialization, and these in turn depend on precise call graph analysis. Existing call graph analyses do not take advantage of the information provided by the rich type systems of contemporary languages, in particular generic type arguments. Many existing approaches analyze Java bytecode, in which generic types have been erased. This paper shows that this discarded information is actual

This paper seeks to investigate the TED infrastructure as a dispositif (Agamben, 2006; Bussolini, 2010)for translating Science and Technology (S&T) projects. We aim to adopt the concept of cultural capital as an interpretative lens for analyzing the dynamics enforced by or emerging from the TED infrastructure, questioning their relationship to selection and outcomes of presenter-related S&T projects. In “Les trois états du capital culturel” (1979), Pierre Bourdieu outlined the three forms of cultural capita

The Molasse is a geologic formation which covers most part of the Swiss plateau. This sedimentary formation is constituted by various types of rock such as sandstones, marls (claystones) and siltstones. The Rock Mechanics Laboratory (LMR) of the EPFL has a great number of test results (uniaxial, triaxial and Brazilian tensile strength) on various types of Molasse. The obtained results related to the lithological characteristics of this formation were statistically analyzed in order to define correlations be

We consider mixed-integer sets described by system of linear inequalities in which the constraint matrix A is totally unimodular; the right-hand side is arbitrary vector; and a subset of the variables is required to be integer. We show that the problem of checking nonemptiness of a set of this type is NP-complete, even in the case in which the linear system describes mixed-integer network flows with half-integral requirement on the nodes.

Programming efficient and reliable code can be considered a non-trivial task, as it requires deep understanding of the problem to be solved along with good programming skills. However, software frameworks and programming paradigms can provide a dependable infrastructure upon which better programs can be written and deployed. This allows engineers to focus mainly on their task, while relying on the underlying run-time environment for taking care of low-level programming issues, such as memory allocation and

It is possible to determine the types and values of stator and rotor errors in magnetic circuits in a synchronous machine by measuring the induced voltage (ui) for the terminals of measurement loops (2) which can capture an image of the induction in the measurement gap, then by treating said signals.

A variety of techniques are being tested on ASDEX Upgrade for avoiding or reducing the divertor energy load caused by ELMs. Quiescent H-mode operation has been improved by operation with recently boronized vessel walls. Z(eff) values in QH-modes are now similar to2.5, comparable with those found in ELMy H-modes of similar density. Type It ELM operation has been generated in discharges with ICRF additional heating alone, thus demonstrating its compatibility with reactor-relevant low core momentum and particl

X-rays, the key ingredient of radiology, are still primarily produced with the mechanism discovered by Rontgen over one century ago. A different approach, however, is becoming increasingly important: the use of synchrotron sources based on fast-moving electrons and on their relativistic properties. We discuss the elements of this new strategy, its practical implementation, and some new types of synchrotron sources under development. The present and potential impact on radiology of different classes of synch

We design and study newObj, a calculus and dependent type system forobjects and classes which can have types as members. Type members canbe aliases, abstract types, or new types. The type system can modelthe essential concepts of Java's inner classes as well as virtual typesand family polymorphism found in BETA or gbeta. It can also model mostconcepts of SML-style module systems, including sharing constraintsand higher-order functors, but excluding applicative functors. The type system can thus be used as a

The existence of the fundamental conflict in churches between the desirable acoustic conditions for music and for speech intelligibility prompted this dissertation. It tackles the subject not only under the acoustical perspective but also in the historical, theological, musicological and architectural aspects. This research studies, initially, how during the past, the liturgy, the acoustical and organizational characteristics of churches supported one or the other of these attributes. The second chapter pre

We present a type system for a language based on F-sub, which allows certain type annotations to be elided in actual programs. Local type inference determines types by a combination of type propagation and local constraint solving, rather than by global constraint solving. We refine the previously existing local type inference system of Pierce and Turner [ Local Type Inference, POPL 98] by allowing partial type information to be propagated. This is expressed by coloring types to indicate propagation directi

We present a protocol for controlling a shared ATM multicast tree supporting many-to-many communication. The protocol supports one or several ATM VCCs of the many-to-many type. The number of VCCs is independent of the number of endpoints. The protocol guarantees that there is no interleaving on any VCC of the tree. The protocol also guarantees that the traffic contract associated with the VCCs is respected, thus making it possible to use ordinary VCCs of the CBR, VBR or UBR class. No re-sequencing server or

The TCV tokamak has obtained ohmic H-modes in virtually all diverted plasmas with the ion del B drift directed towards an X-point and in several elongated limiter plasmas. Troyon factors (beta(tor)aB/l(p)) up to 2 and line average densities up to 2.2 x 10(20) m(-3), corresponding to the Greenwald limit, have been obtained in diverted ELM-free H-modes. Quasi-stationary H-modes lasting for the entire current flat top (1.5 s) have been obtained in the presence of regular ELMs. The occurrence and magnitude of E
