Nuclear fusion presents a promising clean energy source to mitigate future energy crises, with magnetic confinement fusion well-positioned to provide a baseload scenario to power future reactors. The unmitigated power exhaust of such reactors threatens its ...

In order to cope with the decarbonization challenge faced by many countries, fusion is one of the few alternatives to fossil fuels for the production of electricity. Two devices invented in the middle of the previous century have emerged as the most promis ...

We study the drainage of a viscous liquid film coating the outside of a solid horizontal cylinder, where gravity acts vertically. We focus on the limit of large Ohnesorge numbers Oh, where inertia is negligible compared to viscous effects. We first study t ...

Plasma turbulence plays a fundamental role in determining the performances of magnetic confinement fusion devices, such as tokamaks. Advances in computer science, combined with the development of efficient physical models, have significantly improved our u ...

The prediction of trajectories of buoyancy-driven objects immersed in a viscous fluid is a key problem in fluid dynamics. Simple-shaped objects, such as disks, present a great variety of trajectories, ranging from zig-zag to tumbling and chaotic motions. Y ...

We show that including pairing and repulsion into the description of one-dimensional spinless fermions, as in the domain wall theory of commensurate melting or the interacting Kitaev chain, leads, for strong enough repulsion, to a line of critical points i ...

This thesis presents advancements in the understanding of the plasma conditions leading to the excitation and saturation of the Edge Harmonic Oscillations (EHOs) observed during QH-mode operation in tokamak plasmas. Such operations represent a safer altern ...

We study numerically and theoretically the gravity-driven flow of a viscous liquid film coating the inner side of a horizontal cylindrical tube and surrounding a shear-free dynamically inert gaseous core. The liquid-gas interface is prone to the Rayleigh-P ...

This paper proposes a novel method to improve georeferencing of airborne laser scanning by improved trajectory estimation using Vehicle Dynamic Model. In Vehicle Dynamic Model (VDM), the relationship between the dynamics of the platform and control inputs ...

It is known that the pitchfork bifurcation of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability occurring at minimum gradient Richardson number Ri(m) similar or equal to 1/4 in viscous stratified shear flows can be subcritical or supercritical depending on the value of the Pra ...

The global linear stability of a water drop on hot nonwetting surfaces is studied. The droplet is assumed to have a static shape and the surface tension gradient is neglected. First, the nonlinear steady Boussinesq equation is solved to obtain the axisymme ...

Dynamical potentials appear in many advanced electronic-structure methods, including self-energies from many-body perturbation theory, dynamical mean-field theory, electronic-transport formulations, and many embedding approaches. Here, we propose a novel t ...

The Southern Ocean is a critical component of Earth's climate system, but its remoteness makes it challenging to develop a holistic understanding of its processes from the small scale to the large scale. As a result, our knowledge of this vast region remai ...

We present herein the design of a nano-electrospray ion source capable of reliable generation of large quantities of microsolvated ions. The source is based on a triple molecular skimmer scheme and can be quickly tuned to generate bare ions or their ionic ...

Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will construct a large and precise three-dimensional map of our Universe. The survey effective volume reaches similar to 20 h(-3) Gpc(3). It is a great challenge to prepare high-resolution simulations with a much ...

We propose a principled method for projecting an arbitrary square matrix to the non- convex set of asymptotically stable matrices. Leveraging ideas from large deviations theory, we show that this projection is optimal in an information-theoretic sense and ...

This work presents a quantitative test of SOLPS-ITER simulations against tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) L-mode experiments. These simulations account for drifts, currents, kinetic neutrals, and carbon impurities providing the most complete edge tra ...

Results of a three-dimensional, flux-driven, electrostatic, global, two-fluid turbulence simulation for a five-field period stellarator with an island divertor are presented. The numerical simulation is carried out with the GBS code, recently extended to s ...

The interaction between neutral particles and the plasma plays a key role in determining the dynamics of the tokamak boundary that, in turn, significantly impact the overall performance of the device. Leveraging the work in Wersal and Ricci [Nucl. Fusion 5 ...

In the last two decades, the use of OpenFOAM as a multi-physics library for nuclear applications has grown from a sporadic use for exploratory studies to a widespread application for the analysis of innovative reactor concepts and highly complex problems. ...
