Simulation-based optimization models are widely applied to find optimal operating conditions of processes. Often, computational challenges arise from model complexity, making the generation of reliable design solutions difficult. We propose an algorithm fo ...

Thermonuclear fusion of light atoms is the primary energy source of stars, such as our Sun, that led to the emergence of life on Earth. However, its economic exploitation as a virtually unlimited and clean energy source is yet to be developed. One of the m ...

Small-scale turbomachinery is increasingly used in carbon-free energy conversion systems, such as commercial or domestic scale heat pumps, fuels cells for transportation and waste heat recovery. The usage of aerodynamic bearings allows the design of compac ...

The sawtooth instability is known for inducing transport and loss of energetic particles (EPs), and for generating seed magnetic islands that can trigger tearing modes. Both effects degrade the overall plasma performance. Several theories and numerical mod ...

Self-interaction is the process by which a microinstability eigenmode that is extended along the direction parallel to the magnetic field interacts non-linearly with itself. This effect is particularly significant in gyrokinetic simulations accounting for ...

Thermal convection in an inclined layer between two parallel walls kept at different fixed temperatures is studied for fixed Prandtl number . Depending on the angle of inclination and the imposed temperature difference, the flow exhibits a large variety of ...

A one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson simulation code is employed to investigate the plasma sheath considering electron-induced secondary electron emission (SEE) and backscattering. The SEE coefficient is commonly treated as constant in a range of plasma simula ...

Observations of two typical contrasting weakly stable and very stable boundary layers from the winter at Dome C station, Antarctica, are used as a benchmark for two centimetre-scale-resolution large-eddy simulations. By taking the Antarctic winter, the eff ...

Among hydrodynamically unstable flows, the amplifier-flows are characterized by their large amplification potential in presence of external noise. Since amplifiers do not have an intrinsic dynamics, a chosen forcing can be applied to eventually control the ...

Abandoning the assumption of nested magnetic surfaces in tokamak plasma expands the field of research and opens up new approaches for both theoretical and experimental plasma physics. The computer code KINX for calculations of the ideal MHD stability was d ...

Purpose To study the effects of magnetization transfer (MT, in which a semi-solid spin pool interacts with the free pool), in the context of magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF). Methods Simulations and phantom experiments were performed to study the im ...

Turbulence in the edge plasma of a tokamak is a key actor in the determination of the confinement properties. The divertor configuration seems to be beneficial for confinement, suggesting an effect on turbulence of the particular magnetic geometry introduc ...

Magnetic impurities on superconductors induce discrete bound levels inside the superconducting gap, known as Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. YSR levels are fully spin polarized such that the tunneling between YSR states depends on their relative spin orient ...

In the frame of the conceptual design studies for the Toroidal Field (TF) coils of DEMO, a solution based on a layer-wound magnet, rectangular-shaped Cable-in-Conduit conductors and W&R manufacturing approach, is being developed. The feasibility and perfor ...

We investigate the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a thin viscous film coating the inside of a spherical substrate. The aim of this work is to find and characterize the instability pattern in this spherical geometry. In contrast to the Rayleigh-Taylor insta ...

Non-adiabatic electron response leads to significant changes in ion temperature gradient (ITG) eigenmodes, leading, in particular, to fine-structures that are significantly extended along the magnetic field lines at corresponding mode rational surfaces (MR ...

We report on the investigation of an approach for modelling light transmission through systems consisting of several jointed optical fibres, in which the analytical modelling of the waveguides was replaced by Finite Element Modelling (FEM) simulations. To ...
