Organoids, miniature tissues generated from self-organizing stem cells within three-dimensional (3D) extracellular matrices (ECM), have opened up exciting possibilities for in vitro studies of complex physiological processes. A key factor in the success of ...

For the EU DEMO conductor testing, a temperature sensor based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical fiber is studied at the EPFL Swiss Plasma Center. The SULTAN test facility has been upgraded to use fiber optic sensor for temperature monitoring and quench ...

White adipose tissue (WAT) is a cellularly heterogeneous endocrine organ that not only serves as a reservoir for storing and releasing energy but also actively participates in metabolic homeostasis. Given the current rise in obesity and its associated como ...

Cell-cell communication is fundamental for immune balance. Multivalent interactions of surface receptors at immune interfaces drive specific communication, with stimulatory and inhibitory signals guiding the immune outcome. Notably, the valency, affinity, ...

Thin-ply composites, obtained with recently developed fiber spreading techniques, rapidly gained industrial interest because they offer a large composite design freedom, and lead to a composite tensile strength that is close to that of the individual fiber ...

Adipose stem and precursor cells (ASPCs) give rise to adipocytes and determine the composition and plasticity of adipose tissue. Recently, several studies have demonstrated that ASPCs partition into at least three distinct cell subpopulations, including th ...

We explore the dynamics of a flexible fiber transported by a viscous flow in a Hele-Shaw cell of height comparable to the fiber height. We show that long fibers aligned with the flow experience a buckling instability. Competition between viscous and elasti ...

Long-term memory formation relies on synaptic plasticity, neuronal activity-dependent gene transcription, and epigenetic modifications. Multiple studies have shown that HDAC inhibitor (HDACi) treatments can enhance individual aspects of these processes and ...

Establishing relations between fundamental effects in far-flung areas of physics is a subject of great interest in the current research. Realization of a novel photonic system akin to the radio-frequency superconducting quantum interference device (RF-SQUI ...

Mechanobiology explores how forces regulate cell behaviors and what molecular machinery are responsible for the sensing, transduction, and modulation of mechanical cues. To this end, probing of cells cultured on planar substrates has served as a primary ex ...

Over the last two decades, bile acids (BAs) have become established as important signaling molecules that enable fine-tuned inter-tissue communication from the liver, their site of production, over the intestine, where they are modified by the gut microbio ...

Optical fibers have reshaped the technological landscape, from optical networks and high-speed data communication to in situ imaging and non-invasive surgery methods. The revolution allowed by these fibers has been made possible by its fabrication method, ...

The measurement and generation of mechanical deformations is a key functionality in health monitoring, human-machine interaction, and soft robotics. However, current methods typically rely on small and hard transducers, which result in poor performance, cu ...

The fiber thermal drawing process has emerged as a simple and scalable technique for the fabrication of multifunctional and flexible electronics. The integration of materials with various physical and functional properties in well-defined architectures ope ...

Lipid membranes are complex and dynamic systems which are known to mediate signaling processes between cells and their environment. To do this multiple ion channels and pumps are involved in controlling the in- and out-flux of various ions (K+, Na+, Mg2+, ...

Optical amplification in hollow core fibers has been achieved using stimulated Brillouin scattering directly in the gaseous medium. More than 50 dB optical gain is observed over 50 m of fiber using 200 mW of pump power. ...

It is now clear that some cysteines on some proteins are highly tuned to react with electrophiles. Based on numerous studies, it is also established that electrophile sensing underpins rewiring of several critical signaling processes. These electrophile-se ...

Progesterone is considered as the pregnancy hormone and acts on many different target tissues. Progesterone receptor (PR) signaling is important for normal development and the physiologic function of the breast and impinges on breast carcinogenesis. Both s ...

Cancer is a leading cause of death in the world, and the mechanisms that underlie this disease are still not completely understood. As cancer develops and progresses, cells undergo a diversity of mutations that sustain their rapid proliferation and the eva ...

Fiber endoscopy plays an important role in the clinical diagnosis and treatment processes involved in modern medicine. Thin fiber probes can relay information from confined places in the human body that are inaccessible for conventional bulky microscopes. ...
