A device for fragmenting ions by collision induced dissociation, the device intended to be used together with a planar ion mobility apparatus, the device including a first conductive grid having a plurality of first openings, the first conductive grid conf ...

The interactions with touchscreens rely heavily on vision: The virtual buttons and virtual sliders on a touchscreen provide no mechanical sense of the object they seek to represent. This work presents PopTouch: a 500 mu m thick flexible haptic display that ...

Strain is an inevitable phenomenon in two-dimensional (2D) material, regardless of whether the film is suspended or supported. Moreover, strain is known to alter the physical and chemical properties, such as the band gap, charge carrier effective masses, d ...

In this thesis several advances are made to the emerging field of 3D printed mechanical sensors. Techniques and processes were developed to enable the integration of highly conductive, and capacitive and piezoresistive sensing features embedded within 3D p ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are interesting soft actuators compared to other actuation technologies owing to large achievable actuation strains, high energy density and fast actuation. However, because DEAs need to be operated under high electric ...

Superconductor/metal interfaces are usually fabricated in heterostructures that join these dissimilar materials. A conceptually different approach has recently exploited the strain sensitivity of heavy-fermion superconductors, selectively transforming regi ...

The project aims to validate some recent theoretical developments on the deformation twinning nucleation mechanism in HCP metals through small-scale mechanic experiments. To this end, a systematic investigation of the mechanical response of pure magnesium ...

After the spread of COVID-19, surgical masks became highly recommended to the public. They tend to be handled and used multiple times, which may impact their performance. To evaluate this risk, surgical masks of Type IIR were submitted to four simulated tr ...

In this work we perform a neutron Bragg edge tomography of stainless steel 316L additive manufacturing samples, one as built via standard laser powder bed fusion, and one using the novel three-dimensional (3D) laser shock peening technique. First, we consi ...

The development of a robust material model able to accurately describe fibre bed compaction at different strain and strain rates is highly desirable because it is essential for the simulation of many composite manufacturing processes. In this study, we inv ...

Soft, capacitive tactile (pressure) sensors are important for applications including human-machine interfaces, soft robots, and electronic skins. Such capacitors consist of two electrodes separated by a soft dielectric. Pressing the capacitor brings the el ...

The present invention relates to a semiconductor sensor (1) comprising: a source element (17, 19); a drain element (21, 23); a semiconductor channel element (25) between the source element (17, 19) and the drain element (21, 23) for forming an electrically ...

Humidity, temperature and membrane prestretch influence the dielectric breakdown strength of elastomer membranes. These three factors thus also influence the maximum force and strain that dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) can generate, as the Maxwell p ...

This work shows the feasibility of fully Fused-Deposition-Modeling (FDM) printed capacitive and resistive transducers, processed in a single tool. It enables their cost-effective processing and provides a simple approach for sensors manufacturing in 3D pri ...

An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) was used to examine the electrochemical behaviour of pure titanium in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and PBS-containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) solutions, and the associated adsorption characteristi ...

Dielectric elastomer transducers consist of a dielectric elastomer between two compliant electrodes. When the elastic capacitor is electrically charged, the dielectric elastomer elongates until a balance of elastic and electrostatic force is reached. Elect ...

Dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) are flexible capacitors that convert mechanical into electrical energy. They rely on an external voltage source to charge the capacitor during each operation cycle. An alternative to this is an autonomous DEG which op ...

In Atomic force microscopy (AFM), the tip-sample interaction force can be measured through two primary detection techniques: optical beam detection (OBD) and electrical (self-sensing) readout. Compared to the optical method, the convenience of the self-sen ...

We present a simple open-loop method to suppress the viscoelastic drift of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). Viscoelastic creep is one of the drawbacks of DEAs, especially when made with acrylic elastomer membranes (VHB). This leads to a time-dependen ...

The growing research on two-dimensional materials reveals their exceptional physical properties and enormous potential for future applications and investigation of advanced physics phenomena. They represent the ultimate limit in terms of active channel thi ...
